  • I Cord Tab Cast On (for Knitting Shawls) - using a provisional cast-on edge
    An I-cord edge looks beautiful along the top of a shawl and it's very simple to work:
    1. Cast on 3 stitches using a provisional cast on.
    2. Work 5 rows of I-cord - knitting the 3 stitches then slipping them back to the other needle, pulling the yarn tight across the back to close up the gap.
    3. Work row 6 of the I-cord then turn and pick up 3 stitches along the side of the I-cord.
    4. Turn the provisional cast-on edge so the purl side of the stitches faces you, and with the yarn held to the front, slip the stitches to the right needle.
    To maintain this I-cord edge while you work the body of the shawl repeat these instructions for every row of the shawl: Knit 3 stitches, work the shawl body, bring the yarn to the front, and slip the last three stitches purlwise.

    Have you ever used the I-cord tab or an I-cord edge on a shawl?

      Hi! I'm about to try this for the first time :) quick question: why do you need the purl side of the last 3 stitches (that are on the left hand needle)?

      @@Galinsky007 It will help you get set up for working the first row - where you knit those first three stitches. If you don't turn them so the purl side is showing, when you turn to work the first row the purl side will be facing you and, if you knit them, you'll create a small garter ridge - where the purl bumps are on the knit side of the I-cord. Sorry if that's not clear - it's hard to explain!

    Thank you so much. I just bought a new shawl pattern that calls for this cast-on and the video referenced in the pattern is terrible. I didn't understand at all. Your video is very clear with excellent explanation.

    Thank you for this - so helpful. I want to knit a mitred square blanket - 4 large squares - with an I cord edge knitted at the same time. There is a good video description BUT in French and my French isn't familiar enough with the knitting terminology to follow it. Now I can do it!

    I'm knitting a large triangle shawl in stockenite and wondering if the I cord presenting this way will keep the stockenite from rolling forward when I'm wearing it and where it hangs in front of my chest. So you never purl and I cord stitches even when you're doing purling on the wrong side rows?

    • @NerdyKnitting
      @NerdyKnitting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct- just knit and slip.

      @@NerdyKnitting I have done it then times but my I Cord is on the wrong side consistently instead of the stockenite side. Thank you so very much for your help💗💗💗🕊️
