If you concentrated on knocking down the fire and venting the windows from the exterior long before you could be ready to enter, you could have walked up the stairs in a much safer environment and searched all the rooms much faster. This is not meant to be a substitute for fire attack. This is in coordination with fire attack and is a great tactic.
