    Great lighting and very sharp cameras. You had to be a contortionist to push the car onto the elevator from the other side. I'm glad you mentioned the lubricant is plastic-compatible. Mattel constantly warned against oiling the wheels on the old packages.

    • @smackeralcafe
      @smackeralcafe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You have to wonder what kind of oil Mattel was using in the first years of Hot Wheels. Certainly, when you look at today's cars, there is no oil at all on the axles that I can discern.

    Watched all your Hot Wheel videos, Thank you so much ! It was awesome to see all the other stuff that was going on in the early 70's in the Hotwheel world. Even though I had my share of the 70's Hotwheel experience, I grew up with a limited knowledge of the vast variety of offerings back then. Thanks for sharing .

    Great memories come back to life 60 years later from where I was at child playing with my Hot Wheels. I didn't have this set, but I had plenty of orange track, Redlines and SIZZLERS CARS to keep myself entertained for hours in the backyard under the warm 🌞 sun!!! I wish the SIZZLERS Line had never ended. I still have a few non working Vehicles, but some 2006 Models and Playing Mantis SIZZLERS now. The Black Sideburn was my favorite along with the Yellow Hot Wings car, which I still have!

      yup i hear you. Same thing, but i do have this set now. I also got some old sizzlers working along with those playing mantis ones. My favourite as a kid was the hot head for speed and the cuda for looks.. but it was painfully slow

    I like how the tune up thing isn't a gimmick, it actually is a mechanical computer and you get to actually fix the car.

    Wow, I had no idea that these were built to be so accurate and serviceable. Absolutely amazing. It’s so crazy to think that 50 years later, household items costing 10 to 100 times more are not as well-built as these toys. I was A minimally employed six year old in 1972, and spend all of my disposable income on hot wheels and candy. I was fortunate enough to be granted a tuneup tower by Santa one year and a Hot wheels two way supercharger another. While I made sure to change the filters and fluids on all my hot wheels, I didn’t realize that the axles could be tweaked and tires could be changed. Thanks for bringing back great memories!

    • @gnrvintagediecastracing7978
      @gnrvintagediecastracing7978 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was 9 in 72. I had no idea the tune up tower existed. I did swap wheels once i saw the spoiler cars and wanted the bigger tires on the custom camaros and such. But I raced alot, i carried those cars around to race at my friends house. It never occurred to me then you could straighten the axles. 50 years later and i got the wrench, the tower, and started purchasing all my redlines.. and more... then i ever had. Racings back on the Grid... :)

    I'm 60, and have learned more about Hot Wheels just now than I ever knew.
    I wonder how the mechanism of the dynometer assess wheel speed... For such slick and low friction wheels it would have to incredibly sensitive. Unless it really can only really differentiate when there is no small amount of drag present. Enough so that the test drive will tell the same tale (when alignment is otherwise OK.)

    wow, i want to mattel make the remakes of the old sets in the 50th anniversary of hot wheels :D

    • @fumedrummer
      @fumedrummer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They could remake them with updates. But, I don't think Mattel is pouring money into regular track sets and certainly doesn't advertise Hot Wheels like it used to. Since they pretty much own the die cast market in the USA, they're just milking a cash cow. Lately, they've been re-releasing sets with new names and coloring. The most recent innovation I've seen from them is the arrow-shaped boosters... which are tethered to a shared power supply.

    I had no idea that the oil vanished on old redlines like that....I figured from the warning that they were "permanently oiled" and it didn't wear off. Is there a brand name for that oil you use?

    • @smackeralcafe
      @smackeralcafe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Basically, no oil is permanent unless there is a continuous relubing system in place. The oil I found is from Perfect Parts (Baltimore, Maryland). I use their 912 Needle Point Oiler. Specifically, this is a highly refined white oil. I believe white oil is another name for mineral oil. It's a good bet that Mattel used something similar for the early redlines. Today's cars have no oil on the axles. I plan to do a video about this and show how today's cars speed up with simple lubing.

    Great video! Two questions. What are the black pieces on the inside of the rod runner? How do you keep the rod runner from scraping by the paint off the roof of the cars?

    • @smackeralcafe
      @smackeralcafe  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can tell by your questions that I am talking to a pro. The black pieces are thin foam strips that cushion the body of the rod runner from swing arm impact. It also tends to make the rod runner a little quieter. The push mechanism does scratch car roofs and sometimes the nose of the hoods. I was never aware of this as a kid in 1970 but I notice it now. Convertibles and open cockpit cars don't get scratched up very much so this video required no protection. For standard cars I use either pin stripping or a transparent sticker on the hoods and roofs to prevent scratches.

    • @ledferg
      @ledferg 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I use tape as well, just wanted to see if you used something "special"! Where do you get the foam strips from?

    • @smackeralcafe

    Hey smackeral I have this same race set but I have a problem. I'm stuck with using a simple oval track because the dual lane curve track sections have a bump or edge that develops when put together and the cars get stuck or fly off the track when going in the direction towards the lower section of the bump. I've run out of ideas to fix the problem. I've watched the sizzlers cars race on the course without a problem and how do you get your dual lane curves put together so smoothly? I've posted this comment on your sizzlers U.S. race set video I just wanted to post it on a more recent video on hopes of getting a quicker reply. I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to hastily get your attention.

      John Signs Thank you for offering me help. To start off I do not know why my comment ended up in this video when I had commented on either the Atlantic race set or the California race set that has the dual lane curves and Cafe did respond to me, but I guess two years messed something up, because I can’t find the response anywhere. But let me try to visualize it for you. When you put the Dual lane curve together there is a bump that occurs. I have never forced it together in fear of breaking the connectors. A car goes in from left to right it hits a bump that is not supposed to be there and it flies off the track due to the lip that exists when the track is connected, but the curves can be used when the car fire from right to left. Does that help?

    @2:28 I wanted to ask, since I've not gotten a straight answer to it or if someone did answer TH-cam hasn't sent me a notification about it, but does that tune up wrench also work on modern Hot Wheels cars? I have a lot of beat up played with cars that were tracked and crashed multiple times to the point that wheels are now bending inwards and aren't rolling smoothly anymore and was wanting to buy one of these to fix it.

    • @smackeralcafe
      @smackeralcafe  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll find the answer on my video "Tuning UH/HO cars". th-cam.com/video/T4EDDRdcrzc/w-d-xo.html
      The Tune-Up wrench only works on Hot Wheels cars with thin axles. This includes all Red Lines, Ultra Hots, Hot Ones and some Neo Classic cars.
