But things like mirror controls that you almost never do, and if you do it's often while stationarry before starting driving, doesn't need to be a button.
Design is about tradeoffs and one trick is knowing which tradeoffs to make any why. Design will be opinionated, either way, and people will prefer different things, but a spoon that's shaped like a fork or a square basketball are objectively poor designs. I like this designer's intelligent and mostly sensible approach to interior design. If I had to make dashboard design choices I would not make the same choices as he did, I would prefer a smaller driver's dispay and a larger central display, or example, but I similarly don't like Tesla's approach of no buttons. This interior dashboard isn't perfect, but is certainly a more practical approach than Tesla have made, which seems to me to be a production-cost-cutting design pitched as a minimal design. There is no perfect SUV or car dashboard design for everyone. My choice would be either a small driver display or a driver HUD, with a large central display and then two metal dampened beautiful to use dual-zone (two) dials below the central display that are multi-use, and pressing them would cycle trough various features, allowing the user to quickly cycle through what they wanted and turning the dial to adjust the setting. This approach to me is somehow more physically satisfying and yet more minimal than a row of buttons like Lucid have chosen, and much better than Tesla's no-button approach.
I was just coming here to say the same thing. There are some things that screens work well for, but buttons are so much easier. No fussing, no menus. I'd definitely use the digital detox for driving.
Lucid makes a genuine effort to make the driving experience pleasant and intuitive. While many controls are reached through the intuitive screen interface, anybody can get in and drive. On my Air GT the seats can be adjusted in countless ways by screen, but someone just getting in the car for the first time will find basic analog seat switches in the normal place and working in the normal way. The same is true for all the normal driving controls, but steering wheel and mirrors are screen-only, but easy to adjust without menu-surfing.

His design thinking and approach is very straightforward, practical and realistic and I couldn't point to a single response or design choice and be like huh, why did they do it this way. Everything was well explained and it all made practical sense to me. The obvious example of this was the physical controls vs. digital controls question and how they chose which got what. It's a shame Lucid is currently marketed towards the luxury segment buyer but it's not hard to understand why it's much easier for a smaller almost boutique brand like Lucid that isn't making hundreds of thousands of cars a year and their manufacturing costs haven't been so refined to target a higher cost to be able to make a profit.

Lucid 's current lineup is just way too expensive to move any kind of real volume.
I love how Lucid welcomes outside people's input to find out what they really want, or dislike. I also get the impression that contributions from the design team are respected & openly discussed.
@@MarkusAJAnd do you listen to everything everyone tells you? Feel free to make your own opinion but consumers are dumb. Manufacturers will call anything an “SUV” these days and consumers buy it. “Oh I need an SUV”. The gravity is nothing more than a minivan with normal doors. People need to start thinking for themselves nowadays. Take the Porsche cayenne gt coupe. Lmao they call that a SUV, yeah right. A sedan body just lifted up doesn’t make it an SUV.
Interesting thing about Lucid now is that it's one of the car companies that's working with Middle Eastern investment to diversify off oil - Lucid's now majority owned by the Saudi's and it'll be one of the first car manufacturers to have a car manufacturing plant based in Saudi Arabia. Derek is ex head of Mazda North America and they managed to poach quite a few ex GM and ex Tesla executives so they have the knowhow and definitely the money.
Very good point, the combination of the Saudi investment into lucid and the release of Gravity will pay dividends for Lucid, definitely saved the company in my opinion.
I'd deeeefinitely rather have this than any Tesla. It looks infinitely better and is much more aligned with the design I appreciate. I think it looks brilliant.
The best analysis I've seen of Lucid's strategy when designing their vehicles described it as basically "Let's package everything as efficiently as possible to provide the greatest amount of cabin and storage space, design the exterior to be as aerodynamic as possible, then make it look both distinctive and timeless with the wiggle room we have left. We are open to legitimately re-engineering any and every aspect of the vehicle that gets in the way of those goals." And that's why the headlights are unique to Lucid, why they re-engineered their heat pumps to make them more compact, why they re-engineered the drive units to make them more compact, and why they also spent so much effort designing their battery configurations and placement. They wanted a usable interior, an aerodynamic undercarriage design, and as much storage space as possible, so everything got designed and re-designed to make everything fit. Thus the Air, their first ever car, has the size of a Mercedes E-class, but the interior space of an S-class, and the storage capacity of an SUV. It's legitimately a marvel of engineering and packaging, plus the design does grow on you quite quickly. I didn't like the aesthetics at first, but now I'm rather fond of it. Looks vaguely retro-futuristic. Plus the interiors look great, at least as nice as they should for the price. I will go ahead and put this out there: I think Lucid has some of the best interior usability designs out there. The smaller steering wheel is still an eminently usable size and actually helps to mitigate the feeling of the power steering being over-boosted and excessively numb since it lowers the length of the lever you have to work with. The two glass d-pad touch inputs on the steering wheel, in conjunction with additional buttons is really about as good as you can hope for in a 'modern' interior aesthetic and provide adequate discrete input options on the steering wheel, particularly compared to Tesla. The screens, particularly the lower screen, are placed quite sensibly for user input and you still get enough physical controls to not be entirely reliant on the screen for every single thing. In short, all of the touch-points, the places where you interact with the car, are thoughtfully designed and follow trends only where it is useful rather than just trying to be cool. I really like their classy interior design choices.
Glad you picked up the fact Peugeot have been using a smaller steering wheel for a while now. As a 2008 owner, it quickly becomes very natural, and a traditional steering wheel feels odd. It does look great, but I imagine it'll cost north of £100,000 and will sell in relatively small numbers.

Derek mentioning that you could bring a Bluetooth speaker out when using the frunk seating makes me think they should have just added optional speakers up there.
I love the look, the amount of room you get and how you can easily fold the seats completely flat! We would loved to own one if it was available as it fits our family better than our Model X. This will be a good competitor to the Model X, good luck.
That's because Peter Rawlinson, Tesla's ex-chief engineer designed their motor, but gave Lucid his best secrets, so the Lucid is really a higher level Tesla😬
When he talks about other companies making SUVs with sharp angles and transformer type designs we know he is talking about the upcoming Electric Escalade and you know what, is true!
The problem comparing Lucid to Tesla is always price The base model will be around $5k more than the base model X and have 200hp less available and less equipment (circa 480hp v 670 hp for the base X), sure power is not everything but unless they bring it under the FTC cap then it will be more like $12,500 more expensive at the base model equivalent. The headline 1000hp+ Sapphire version , will come in around $250,000 with various trim levels at $100k to 150k in between whereas you can get the1020 hp X plaid for a little over $90k. It's a well designed and nice looking car but it's not a X competitor it's in a different price category.
The accessories kit for the outdoor seat in the front trunk should come with a detachable visor for the open hood which shields your legs from rain and sun. How might you extend the use of the rear cargo cover as an awning?
We'll, I've apparently reached the age where the interior and their relatively subtle approach to tech integration is what has sold me, rather than styling and performance. Well done Lucid on letting function take the wheel and making trendiness get out and walk.
At 9:04, you turned left but your right indicator was the one blinking. This is a prototype, but it is a very dangerous thing that should be fixed to avoid having a crash during any of the test drives!
I'm in love with the Lucid Air. It's a gorgeous sedan. With the Gravity, which Lucid should have released before the Air, I find the Model X more interesting and distinctive without being outlandish like the Cybertruck. This resembles a Toyota Sienna. A vehicle where I have visceral disdain. It could be a Toyota, a Hyundai or an Audi. This is the vehicle that I've been waiting for Lucid to produce. But I don't feel drawn to it, and don't imagine this will turn many heads or seduce many people.
I like how the prototype wrap is completely the opposite of what other manufacturers use. They try to hide what they're designing, while the gravity's wrap literally has it's name written all over it.
Good interview. Like how it is identifiable by similarity to the sedan. Van-like maybe but this follows the lines of the sedan and more headroom spacious like old Lincoln MKX. Great design. Maybe one day there will be much more affordable SUV versions available same quality🎉
Instead of this gigantic SUV, they should focus on a mid size model Y competitive suv. The price point of Gravity is just too high that will not attract consumers. (In fact Model X does not sell well either ). The part of the reason Air does not sell is because its price point is too high. Remember Tesla almost died until Model 3 got released successfully.

Lucid 's current lineup is just way too expensive to move any kind of real volume.
Absolutely stunning, even better looking than the Lucid Air
Finally, something too beautiful enough to get the whole family of them. Having the sedan next tot he SUV in front of your house would be mad
He knows what he’s asking for while another knows how to answer the damn right thing, incredible jobs.
Digital detox is a brilliant feature as i love tech and screens but it can get really annoying at night because of the glare
this car looks so clean without looking boring, very hard to achieve this balance
I love how Lucid welcomes outside people's input to find out what they really want, or dislike.
I also get the impression that contributions from the design team are respected & openly discussed.
What a beautiful car !
I'm not normally a SUV kind of guy, but this looks rather good
Lol it’s not a SUV dude.
@@TheMazi56 What is it then? Lucid them selves calls it an SUV.
@@TheMazi56 define a SUV then for us illiterate and uninformed .
@@aks20002 It’s not that hard to figure out. Toyota 4Runner, Rivian R1S, Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe..etc.
Thank you Lucid for bucking the trend of digitizing everything and converting it to touch. Your customers will thank you for it.
Many sensible design choices made here. Wish them success.
Besides the right side indicator coming on when you turned left, looks good.
The Gravity is a Game changer!
How so?
How is it a game changer? Game changer would be something affordable, EV9 is more of a game changer in the EV world than this.

Lets go Lucid !!! The car is awesome , lets goo 💎💎💎💎💎
Derek mentioning that you could bring a Bluetooth speaker out when using the frunk seating makes me think they should have just added optional speakers up there.
Added cost, weight, and complexity for rare use?
@@ultimatist 'Optional'
Two coax speakers probably weigh as much as the pillows and it's fixtures.
This is what I call "My dream vehicle".
I love the look, the amount of room you get and how you can easily fold the seats completely flat! We would loved to own one if it was available as it fits our family better than our Model X. This will be a good competitor to the Model X, good luck.
such a beautiful car , range utility.. almost perfect
Amazing car Lucid, Lucid is 100 procent better than the Tesla
That's because Peter Rawlinson, Tesla's ex-chief engineer designed their motor, but gave Lucid his best secrets, so the Lucid is really a higher level Tesla😬
Lucid’s design language works much better in SUV form. It looks great! But also a bit like a Lincoln suv
Not keen on SUVs but this one I like a lot. Good job Lucid 👍
@24:00 WOW, that statement Reminds me of #ChrisBangle . Great Statement
When he talks about other companies making SUVs with sharp angles and transformer type designs we know he is talking about the upcoming Electric Escalade and you know what, is true!
The sedans ive seen in person were very good looking.
The problem comparing Lucid to Tesla is always price
The base model will be around $5k more than the base model X and have 200hp less available and less equipment (circa 480hp v 670 hp for the base X), sure power is not everything but unless they bring it under the FTC cap then it will be more like $12,500 more expensive at the base model equivalent.
The headline 1000hp+ Sapphire version , will come in around $250,000 with various trim levels at $100k to 150k in between whereas you can get the1020 hp X plaid for a little over $90k.
It's a well designed and nice looking car but it's not a X competitor it's in a different price category.
Is the company even going to be around in the future? Stock price has gone from $55 down to $3.50.
Who needs a Model X competitor? The X sells only in minuscule numbers.
The accessories kit for the outdoor seat in the front trunk should come with a detachable visor for the open hood which shields your legs from rain and sun. How might you extend the use of the rear cargo cover as an awning?
Something that deploys like a folding hand fan from under the hood lip feels nifty too. Or, maybe just a notch to hold your umbrella
It looks beautiful.
It's not a bad car on the outside. Its future will be determined by costs and mass production.
We'll, I've apparently reached the age where the interior and their relatively subtle approach to tech integration is what has sold me, rather than styling and performance. Well done Lucid on letting function take the wheel and making trendiness get out and walk.
What a beautiful and well thought out vehicle. Impressive stuff Lucid.
Next generation electric car 💪👍
@EnriqueThielethey have the Saudis backing the,. They ain’t going nowhere.
@EnriqueThiele ...because they will last for decades!
We have the contract to build the 2nd & 3rd row seating of the gravity. We built all the fixtures for the seat frame welding.
I was not aware of that dark mode setting in Saab cars; we need to bring that back.
as a lucid stockholder this is the car that should of came out with first
i dont see the need for 1000 hp
500hp should suffice and cut weight
This is a compelling vehicle! Love being able to turn off the screens. 😊
Looks great. I'd love the "Digital Detox" feature on the Lucid Air GT.
Lucid the pinnacle of EVs
That Saudi $ being put to work!
I like how the prototype wrap is completely the opposite of what other manufacturers use. They try to hide what they're designing, while the gravity's wrap literally has it's name written all over it.
It's a great question.
4:26 I like how Michael Bay's Transformers is now used to describe anything thats over-designed/complicated
If you don’t check out this magnificent auto you will be sorry
His a really clever guy who knows how to talk when selling ,
Good interview. Like how it is identifiable by similarity to the sedan. Van-like maybe but this follows the lines of the sedan and more headroom spacious like old Lincoln MKX. Great design. Maybe one day there will be much more affordable SUV versions available same quality🎉
Lucid is on an entirely different level in the EV game
Good questions and letting the person you're interviewing actually talk. Good job
I like the idea of digital detox
I hate SUVs but this Lucid is beautiful
Nice so far, but not a word on repeatability. Do you have to replace the whole front body if you have a scratch on the right wing?
Do the bonesaws come standard, or are they optional?
Crazy how big that LED panel is right in front of the steering wheel.
Absolutely stunning!
watched until minute 12 because for some reason i just wasnt able to stand the reviewer, but the gravity it's looking nice :D
I thought the rear tail lights had to also be on sides and the rear door so they can be seen when the rear door is up?
I love every single thing about it 😍😍😍 I wish the company to succeed and manufacture a smaller model, and also sell it in Europe 😁😁
