Absolutely adore her. One of my favorite actresses in the 30s. All those Cagney collaborations. Legendary.

More Pre-Code in the collection would be brilliant. I loved The Story of Temple Drake.

@@RyanOlmi pre Hays code. It was implemented in the 1930s to censor violence and other things in Hollywood films.

Thank you so much for the all that you do! To whom it may concern, let’s get some more of SOPHIA LOREN’s films in a collection if possible! Her movies with De Sica in the 60s would be great!

Riding the thin line between pre and post enforced Hays Code, Joan was also magnificent as the wise cracking, teasing, and tempestuous wife Vicki Wallace-Thorpe in "Smarty" ("Hit Me Again"), though it is always difficult to watch or imagine, even in acting, someone slap that so very pretty and so filled with love, life, light, and laughter face. She was glorious as the traveling con woman in love opposite James Cagney in "Blonde Crazy" (the wide-eyed chipmunk face she makes alongside Guy Kibbee is hilarious) and the head of a crime syndicate in "Blondie Johnson". Joan was truly a versatile actor in any role and whether starring in or a supporting player, she always seems to demand the attention of the audience. She was also magnificent in her supporting role of seasoned nurse Maloney alongside Barbara Stanwyck in "Night Nurse". This was the first film I had ever seen Clark Gable in where he wasn't the star and didn't have his signature mustache, but still a wonderful performance and a glimpse into the future of the star he would become. This video has inspired me to open my DVR and finally view "The Public Enemy". I hope to view as many of Joan's films as I can while I am still here. Thank you.

Joan Blondell set me on fire as a teenager. Something about her friendly attitude self assured style direct, humorous. Drove me nuts. No surprise there. So many from that time when they were young knocked it out of the park : Sophia Lauren rocket fuel, Ginger Rogers, Leslie Caron, enough to cause an explosion. Different people with different makeups with the unescapable image of "wo - man". Alluring red hot, with a distinctive touch of "dignity", and "grace". Tough to match that.

Joan Blondell and James Cagney together were magnificent. They were magnificent separately, of course, but together? LOVE!

I don't think she was particularly fond of many of the 52 roles she played while under contract in the 1930's yet those performances are beloved nevertheless

Hmmm. Why this ode to Joan Blondell? Could it be some of her films are coming to Criterion? I hope so. Criterion and WB have been tight lately with Criterion releasing lots of WB films and lots of Criterion films airing on TCM. It would be great to have some Joan Blondell and James Cagney precode in the collection.

It's to promote a program of films for the Criterion Channel streaming service. They often license films for short periods that aren't and won't become part of the collection.
