Perfect tutorial--thank you! I just today figured out how to use X-band repeat. I used the manual, and like you said, it's clear as mud. You've saved me the pain of going through that again to learn the next step, remote control. You rock.
Outstanding Elmer! Thanks for this video, you're a scholar and a gentleman at this hobby. I like how you explain but never talk down. Make more videos. Nice Jeep too.
Thanks for the great video. The video really made the difference for me in figuring this out. I have a Kenwood TM-D710A and a TH-D72A and TH-D75A and found this was very helpful. I found to enter wireless remote control operation on the Kenwood TM-D710A transceiver, I had to set the A side and the B side of the mobile to VFO mode in addition to moving the PTT / CTRL on the A side before I turn off the transceiver and turn it on again to enter wireless remote operation mode by pressing REV and ON. After I was in remote control mode I could switch to Memory mode by pressing PTT holding and pressing 9. If side A was on Memory mode I could not turn it on and off and have it enter remote control mode. I put this note up for myself or anyone else in the future to reference this. Also the A band has to be on a 2m frequency, if it is on a 70cm frequency it won't allow cross band repeating as the frequencies for control and transmit are too close.
Great Video..Thanks for the information. I live in a condo and cannot have any antennas in the air. I will be installing the V71A in my car and using the remote control to work local repeaters. I'm so glad I found this video. I didn't realize you could remote control the radio this way. I thought I was stuck on using X-band repeat only which would require going out to the car to change the frequencies each time. Rob L. Michigan.
Too bad that feature is no longer available in the newer ones though. :-( Just read that the DTMF "remote Control" of the radio shown in the video is no longer available in 2 Kenwood models; Kenwood TM-V71A, and TM-D710GA: TM-V71A serial number B8610081, and above, and TM-D710GA serial number B8610001, and above do not have the DTMF remote control of the radio feature because manufacturer can no longer get the DTMF chips. I wish I would have seen that article before I ordered one literally hours before reading the article! Article in qrz that was started o July 7, 2019 titled: "Kenwood tm v-71a wont enter remote control mode".
I applaud you and curse you at the same time. *grin* I now _have to_ (that's what I'm telling the wife) buy this radio. I will need to spend some time sleeping in the garage but I'll have a great radio to keep me company. Great instruction and quality of the video. Make some more for us for example echo link on this rig - that would be cool.
My question Dave is how do you just split the left side (VHF) from the right (UHF) just basic? When I programed 40 UHF repeaters on the right side, I was in VFO mode to switch over to program VHF repeaters on the left. I noticed when I hit the memory button, all UHF repeaters were now on the left side as well as the right. I'm a little confused on separating the bands as a dual band radio. Please advise??? Thanks es 73, Ronny KG7A
I must be choo nged with this new fangled electric-tricity stuff. I"m programming my Kenwood, TM -V7A and I entrered my call sign. and it locked the power on function to where its loced up. So I have to program in a password, usting a MCP-2A prigram. Soi where do I find one?
Hey Dave, did you get the chance to upload the instruction sheet you mentioned at the end of the video? I ordered my TM-V71A yesterday and can't wait to get it and start playing. I’m not sure if you take requests, but are you planning on doing any EchoLink or packet videos? I think packet would come in very handy in EComm situations
Hello AF5DN from VA3SY, Nice video thank you .. its for an information, or i could have all his orders on paper ?? because i will have my tm-71a this week thanks for the help VA3SY
Hi. Thanks for the helpful video. I have been thinking of getting the Kenwood and after watching your videos I will do so tomorrow. I am in Dallas hope to hear you out there. Also looking for a really good antenna for my 2000 F150. Any preferences?73's KG5OOL

Owned this radio for sometime, I didn't even know it was capable. Thank you
Very nice! I have had the v71 for a while and knew it would do it but hadn't really looked into it until now. Thanks!
Hi Dave, Jim here, KB1QIF thanks for the cultural enrichment just got the radio the other day. Please make more video's like this one. Thanks, Jim

Great review of this function! Not only did this bring the feature to my attention, but the video was a great "How To" to learn it quickly.

Good video...I like the new format with dual video, you can really see what you're doing on the radio.
Thanks for the videos on remote control and cross banding. They were very helpful!
this is so awesome. I had no idea I could remotely control my radio with my HT.
great Video - Thanks for the help was able to set up my remote and X-Band in my truck in about 10 minutes. All the best and 73 KE4PLT

Good walk thru. Don't forget to ID. 73, de N5MJ
Thanks for the instructions. I just bought the TM-V71A and this video made it very clear. BTW your web site is broken.
New kenwood tm-v71a radios don't have this anymore 😔
Must have been a firmware update. I am guessing?
On the Baofeng UV5
A= Menu, B = Up Arrow, C = Down Arrow, D = Exit.
On my UV-9r Plus it's C,A,B,D (for the keys above)
I want to use my VT71A to do Winlink! I am having trouble doing that. Can you help me with that.

When you talked about selecting the PIN Code, what is the purpose in that?
I am glad, I was not sure it would work out very well. thanks for the feedback.
My old baofeng has A,B,C,D as yours does, but my newer ones have C,A,B,D which made this way too confusing. #ThanksBaofeng!
At 11:10 did you just transmit your control pin to the repeater? Is there a way to avoid that?
Great job, wonder if I can control Yaesu dual banders
hello, can you make a video on the kenwood TM-V71A programming the so50 satellite using the PG-5G cable. thanks.
I like your videos because I learned a lot. Thank you and 73 from Puerto Rico. KP4ZA.
