Hands down- Ben is the best teacher- and applies basic learning techniques for ANY craft- thankfully he is offering this teaching method for Tattoo artists! I am proclaiming myself an apprentice of Ben Fisher! I really had to humble myself and go back to basics. I like that Ben continously reminds me to do so.
I started an apprenticeship and backed out after I discovered a few things that I was being taught "wrong". Took another one with someone that got in an accident about the time I started to tattoo. That was about 10 years ago and I've done countless tattoos since. It's really, really productive for me to actually hear someone confirm the fundamentals that I learned and even give me another way of looking at what I'm trying to accomplish. So, thanks very much for laying this out without the ego and everything. These lessons are far better than the old "how-to" videos that I bought back in the day.

This sounded difficult, and I was a little unsure that I would be able to join these lines that well at the start. But your lesson first explaining how to join lines made it so easy to understand and apply that when it came time to do the exercise, it was like I had already been practicing this. Your instructions are always so clear and straightforward. With every lesson I know I'm learning and growing because I can see my lines getting tighter and less wobbly after each video. When you say carbon paper, do you mean the type you use for drawing vs thermal paper you use in a printer? If so... I had no idea that would work as a transfer! Also never thought you could use normal paper to stencil fake skin! Thank you so much for all your hard work with the videos! I'm on your fundamental course at the moment, loving it of course! how do you know if youre not going to make the whole line? in other words; how would i know when i wont have enough ink, and will need to stop halfway? and use this method

I damned near love you, Ben. One question though: can I draw the line downwards, instead of pushing it upwards? I'm more comfortable that way... Of course, I follow the instructions in the video anyway! Thank you for this amazing series, you're the man.
Ole-Martin Blestrud I have this same question. I find it a lot more stable and comfortable to pull the machine towards me instead of pushing it away. Is there any difference ?
I don't have the experience this guy does, but, I can tell you from my experience that pushing a line keeps the needle more rigid in the tube, where dragging the line pulls it away from the side of the tip and makes it harder to control. Albeit on a small scale, if you're trying to get really clean lines, you don't want any of that wobble at all. If you turn the machine 180 degrees, you can pull down, because the needle is still being pushed into a "fixed" position in the tip. If you pull without turning the machine, there's too much free play.
I should also add, that you typically start on the bottom of a tattoo and work up, as to not smudge your stencil. If you're not starting from the side of your tattoo hand and you work down, you have a higher chance of smudging the stencil.

Ben just uses dettol. But you can use what ever product you like best. Ive heard some people even use speed stick. As for the voltage Ben never says what volts he is using as this will be different from one person to the next. Hope this helps.
MeMo, to find your own voltage. Start at a low voltage and run a line at the correct depth at a comfortable speed. Look at the line if you have a weak line. Up your voltage and repeat until you get a nice crisp solid line. That will be your lining speed.
I'm a newbie that want to start doing tattoos, i don't know anything about them...can anyone tell me how to get the carbon paper and which solution do they spray on the skin before they put on the carbon smudge. Please and thank you
I’ve found that can depend on how you prepare the stencil and what you use - thermal printer, eco tank printer or hand drawn also the type of fake skin you use. I’ve used all and at moment I’m just drawing them myself, using reelskin and leaving for about 15 minutes before peeling and it seems to work fine for me. I left one about 3 hours the other day when I did the panther and the stencil was so engrained it’s hard to see the lines in places as the stencil lines just show through.

This sounded difficult, and I was a little unsure that I would be able to join these lines that well at the start. But your lesson first explaining how to join lines made it so easy to understand and apply that when it came time to do the exercise, it was like I had already been practicing this. It doesn't have really big effect if you stretch fake skin or not. You should grab your machine relaxed because otherwise your muscles will hurt.

Depends what machine and grip your running buddy
It's more about keeping the needle in the back of a tube,at all times, to collect the full amount of ink.

When you say carbon paper, do you mean the type you use for drawing vs thermal paper you use in a printer?
If so... I had no idea that would work as a transfer! Also never thought you could use normal paper to stencil fake skin!

I damned near love you, Ben. One question though: can I draw the line downwards, instead of pushing it upwards? I'm more comfortable that way... Of course, I follow the instructions in the video anyway! Thank you for this amazing series, you're the man.
Ole-Martin Blestrud I have this same question. I find it a lot more stable and comfortable to pull the machine towards me instead of pushing it away. Is there any difference ?

I don't have the experience this guy does, but, I can tell you from my experience that pushing a line keeps the needle more rigid in the tube, where dragging the line pulls it away from the side of the tip and makes it harder to control. Albeit on a small scale, if you're trying to get really clean lines, you don't want any of that wobble at all. If you turn the machine 180 degrees, you can pull down, because the needle is still being pushed into a "fixed" position in the tip.
If you pull without turning the machine, there's too much free play.
I should also add, that you typically start on the bottom of a tattoo and work up, as to not smudge your stencil. If you're not starting from the side of your tattoo hand and you work down, you have a higher chance of smudging the stencil.

Ben just uses dettol. But you can use what ever product you like best. Ive heard some people even use speed stick. As for the voltage Ben never says what volts he is using as this will be different from one person to the next. Hope this helps.
MeMo, to find your own voltage. Start at a low voltage and run a line at the correct depth at a comfortable speed. Look at the line if you have a weak line. Up your voltage and repeat until you get a nice crisp solid line. That will be your lining speed.

What do you use to wipe the ink? My ink always smudges like crazy. I use a mixture of distilled water and greensoap or vaseline.

How long do you leave your stencil on the fake skin before starting? Too long and it tends to stain mine lol
If you use a hair dyer for about 15 min. Its usually good to go. Some leave it over night. I hope this helps
I’ve found that can depend on how you prepare the stencil and what you use - thermal printer, eco tank printer or hand drawn also the type of fake skin you use. I’ve used all and at moment I’m just drawing them myself, using reelskin and leaving for about 15 minutes before peeling and it seems to work fine for me. I left one about 3 hours the other day when I did the panther and the stencil was so engrained it’s hard to see the lines in places as the stencil lines just show through.
If you patient and using the reelskin I found that about 2 hours is plenty for the most part.
