Hi I guess I'm a Theory Trained Person. I thought I'd share some of the technical names of things that Dodie talks about here, and maybe do some analysis too. (It also doesn't matter like she says, it's just fun for those who want to know)
@1:25 The rhythm/ accent pattern here is like a modified Bo Diddley beat. The first popular usage of it comes from a song from 1955 called Bo Diddley, by a guy called Bo Diddley.
@1:41 This verse chord progression is super beautiful for a lot of reasons! It starts in B major proper but actually borrows a lot from B minor as well. D#7 borrows its third (G, technically F double sharp) from B minor. That G comes back again as the third of the E minor chord at the end of the progression.
There's also some great voice leading going on here. The fifth of B major is F#, which moves up nicely to the G in D#7, then up again to the G# in the E chord, and then back down to the G in the E minor chord. It's super smooth and wistful. It's the G borrowed from B minor that makes the verse sound so melancholy.
@3:09 You can write this lots of different ways, the easiest being Em/G. That just tells you that the G is the lowest note of the chord, instead of E like it would usually be.
@3:26 So this is a B minor but it also has an E (the 4th degree) and an A(the minor 7th) so I'd call it a Bm11 omit 9... Super complicated way of saying play B, D, E and A. You could also play it as a Bm7.
@3:29 I'd call this chord an Asus I think. The A note is on the bottom, and it contains the notes A, D, and E.
@3:33 Dodie doesn't play the 7th here, so I think this is just an E chord. I'll have to go listen to the finished song to double check though.
@4:06 There's no third in this B chord, so you can just call it a B5. The minor third is kind of implied though since we're firmly in the key of B minor.
@5:45 The term you're looking for is dominant seventh. :) Major third seventh describes it perfectly though. It's called a dominant seventh because it naturally comes out of the dominant (the fifth degree) of the major scale when you stack thirds.
@6:00 oh hey she talks about what I was saying about the E minor :) There's lots of ways to name it. Em7/G works well since she's playing a D.
@7:00 okay this whole section!! I'd just call those three chords Bm, Bm/A, and the Bm/G#. Slash chords make things super simple. The core "feeling" of this section is all B minor, it just has a bassline that moves, so that's all that needs describing, if that makes sense.
@7:28 I think Gmaj7 is the best way to write that! That C#/Db is just in the string melody on the record, so again I think the main feeling is Gma7, with just some C# peeking in now and again. You could write it as Gma7#11 maybe? But that sort of implies the lydian mode and we don't really need to get into that.
All this to say western music theory is just an old, super Eurocentric way of describing the relationships between different wavelengths of wiggly air. I know it frustrates and confuses a lot of people, but it's really just a lens we can use to look at the world of music. It's just a tool that can help us understand and talk to each other about the way music makes us feel.
Lots of love always Dodie! Congrats on another beautiful and relatable song.

Dodie, I honestly love that you don’t necessarily have the theory background to know what the chords are - you write so freely and create such interesting sounds and harmonic progressions because you aren’t locked into that western framework.
Also, most of jazz is just made up chords, so like, you’re good 👍🏼😅

The strumming pattern in this song is down-down-up-up-down-down-up-up-down-down-up which counts for 1 bar.
Bars are the way a piece of music is divided into, so the line "i KISSED someONE it WASn't YOU" is equivalent to 1 bar with the 4 stresses on the capitalised syllables.
A bar in 4ths (basically 1 bar divided into 4 beats) is counted as [1-2-3-4]
A bar in divided into 8ths is counted as [1-&-2-&-3-&-4-&]
This strumming pattern divides the bars in to 16ths so [1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a]
The strums are separated into downstrokes and upstrokes that alternate, so 1-e-&-a is down-up-down-up.
    The strumming pattern:
    1 e & a 2 e & a
down - down up - up down -
    3 e & a 4 e & a
down up - up down - down up
In this strumming pattern, like most others, some of the upstrokes or downstrokes are not played, which creates some variation.
For example, in the first beat, the "e", which should be an upstroke, is not played (represented by a "-") so you skip an upstroke and go straight to the next, which is a downstroke.
    Hope this makes sense :)

Figured I'd add my two cents to the whole music theory side of it since I guess I'm kinda a music theory person (I only speak piano though)...
5:47 Technically this chord is a secondary dominant borrowed from a relative key, so instead of calling it a III7 it should be called V7/vi. In classical theory this chord would be expected to resolve to the vi chord, which is G# minor in this case, but this is pop and so the IV chord commonly substitutes for that vi chord. Also interestingly since she established we're in B major, this chord would be spelled with an F double sharp instead of a G.
5:56 This would be called a iv chord since dodie's using modal mixture here and borrowing from the relative minor key. This is one of the reasons why when the song switches from major to minor it is almost unnoticeable, because she is already using chords from B minor. Also this minor plagal feel is incredibly compelling and leads naturally back to a B chord (in negative harmony, it is the negative version of the dominant chord).
6:06 Since the guitar is playing an E minor chord here, I'd lean towards calling this some sort of E chord such as Em7 instead of a G-based chord, but it really depends.
7:01 This progression I'm not 100% how to describe, but my best guess would be D2/B, D2/A, E7,9/G#.
7:22 This progression is just a Bm, Bm/A and Bm/G#. Modern notation makes this really easy, but this would be a headache in classical notation.
7:43 This chord is a GM7,#11 or if the E is involved then it's an Em7,9,#13/G. Getting some real Jacobean vibes from this one.
7:49 Just wanted to point out that if the previous chord is an Em chord, then the last three chords are a beautiful example of a circular progression where each chord is a fourth higher (or a fifth lower) than the next chord. Here it is Em to Bm to F#. Also a heartbreaking half cadence.
That's my analysis, thanks for much for an amazing song! :)

This piece is haunting me from the day of its release, with its Common-Time-set-in-3-3-2 strumming pattern and gripping string section.
Yet had I a thought this feeling might count heavily on the specific ambience and extreme difference in sound between the verse and chorus, there you came by putting it all on the guitar and “marking” it along oh-so-plainly - and proved the unquestionable core it has for what it is, with or without the excellent construction of the official mix.
    You’re truly wonderful. Plainly put.

Just had this playing in the background and not paying lots of attention so sorry if I get this a bit wrong but anyway - 6:24 Bm11 (you play the dominant 7th and the 11th) - at 7:30 it's a Gmaj7#11. The descending line thing some people call a "line cliché" or some people call it a CESH (Contrupuntal Elaboration of a Static Harmony). Sounds great, who cares what it's called.

    • @rionasallyhartman8089
      @rionasallyhartman8089 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Also 6:30 you could call it D/A (D over A) or D9/A...but given the context of the descending line I'd prob call it Bm11/A coz the point of that sequence is that the bass is descending while the top part of the harmony is static.

lol when i take notes to myself i always just put desc and i know what that means (descending)

i'm so bad at knowing what 11ths are they're basically 4ths like 9s are 2nds lol rite

      @@doddlevloggle yes they are! And 13ths are 6ths ☺️

@@doddlevloggle yeah exactly. Technically if you say Bm11 your implying that there's a dominant 7th in there too somewhere whereas if you say add4 or something like that you're kind of saying "don't add any other spicy extensions just that exact note". Ha! I'm sure someone will correct me on that with a more accurate definition.

Kinda realised just now that the song i wrote this week was probably subconsciously inspired by this song. Its the perpective of the mom friend (alternatively the only gay person at the party aka me) watching all the shit that happens and then bringing their drunk friends home and still being kind of jealous of all those people being careless and living life (mom friend) and making out with random people (gay friend)

The chord progression of the verse is a classic: "Creep". (I - IIImajor - IV - IVm)
