I miss these games. Wet muddy games with baseball field layer out in the stadium. Or even better snow covered fields. One of the things that made football standout was it was an everyweather game. I understand calling for lightning kind of. I mean typically the ball players run in yet they leave the fans who are sitting in metal stands in the weather at Gods mercy.

I agree… REAL football.. todays game is so sterile with these fake fields. Yes, there was astroturf back then. But there was so much more natural grass fields. To many luxury Airport hangar-like stadiums today
plus they don't allow fan banners and some places don't allow tailgating. Ya gotta give the fans what they want....and sometimes need (ie. beer and brats that won't cost an arm and a leg inside the stadium)

Unfortunately we're never going to see mud caked players or weather beaten fields like that again as most of the fields nowadays are artificial turf and they take care of the fields too much with tarp and such. There was one historic bad-weather game in 1975. In Buffalo. The Vikings destroy the Bills 35-13. Most importantly Fran Tarkenton passed Johnny Unitas on the all-time TD Pass record. And before being hit in the eye with a snowball, Chuck Foreman totaled 172 all purpose yards and scored 4 touchdowns. And in perfect Foreman style-2 Rush TD's, 2 PassTD's. SKOL
I remember it well. My relatives wanted to turn the tv off cuz the Vikes had the game in the bag, but I wanted to see if Foreman would beat O.J. for the touchdown leadership in the NFL......so the tv stayed on.
@@markgardner9460 It was an interesting game for us. We have family in Buffalo, while we are in Burnsville for the Vikings. OJ was so huge, even my brothers had posters of the Juice. One thing to think about regarding Chuck Foreman. He and Gale Sayers has virtually the same length career. Both cut short by bad injuries. Sayers is in the HOF. While Chuck had better stats and is not in the HOF.

Playing for a major market helped along with a catchy nickname "The Kansas Comet", a 6 TD game and a movie, Brian's Song, in which he was prominately associated with all were factors in him getting in as the youngest player of all time.
I was at the Eagles-Giants game at the Yale Bowl. One of the Giants DB's Pete Athas dove for a tackle and the water went over his helmet like he was diving into a pool.
Another great production, love all those splash audio bits and music, nice touch with the dancing, some of those old half times with marching bands went out of sight. How about Chuck Foreman getting drenched @2:45 and that sideline security calling him safe, ha! Every time I see Giants highlights from the Yale Bowl I was glad I was not attending those years, you think they would have covered Charlie Young eventually, ha.
Charley Young's career started off HOT, but then cooled cobsiderably when he went west in the Jaworski trade. He didn't get targeted nearly at all with the Rams being a running team and I think he lost interest because Terry Nelson ended up taking his starting spot later on.

BTW: There is a bad weather football throwing technique, which I introduced to a football writer for ESPN called Power-Pronation - where the wrist is supinated prior to pronation. Although the technique is good under all weather conditions - if one picks up and holds the ball using supination (palm-up) rather then turning the ball palm-down the chance for the fumble of a slippery ball is reduced. Strange perhaps, but also simple.

I notice that in pro soccer games (I've only been to one, the DC United crew sucks this year btw) the home team, if it's behind, will, at halftime, wet the field. I Bing'd it and found this is done often against the wishes of the visiting team to favor the home team, since a slippery turf makes for less injuries and favors the defense, allowing the underdog a better chance to win. Same here perhaps? More upsets by the underdog? As they say in science, "further research is needed" But @6:30 our host provides a clue, that there were more turnovers which would seemingly favor the less talented team.

I was only 8 when these guys played but as I grew older I resented the changes in football over the years somehow knowing it would abandon the roots that made it great. And I was right. The first thing to go was the weather. Kingdomes, Astrodomes and that awful Balloondome in MN. Half the fun was watching teams take advantage of their home field weather. Now, it’s all the same. Just so they can sell more plastic foam hats. Wow. The last thing the NFL killed was spontaneity. Never mind what you just saw with your own eyes, the NFL replay booth will let you know in 3-5 minutes if the play will stand. Absolutely ridiculous.

@@markgardner9460 I remember watching that eagles Giants game as a kid , one of the players in that game slid out of bounds in doing so took mud and fling it up into another players face mask the announcer made a comment , these teams do not like each other , over the years I have went to a coupe of eagles and giants game , the fans and the fights in the stands and the parking lots are unreal they used to have a magistrate[Judge] in the stadium No other NFL stadium had that , rivalry , people talk about the Bears vs Packers , Chief vs Raiders they have never went there NY Phila .

The only thing bad about the football back then with these people trying to win the oldest man trophy. Was that from players having to walk across country to next road game up hill both ways in 39 feet of snow & temps as low as -78 + wind chill, degrees & as hot as 159 degrees + humidity. So players where slow & tired by time of game !
It's possible. One thing is for certain, the old timers didn't get substituted for in 3rd and longs or goal line situations. The rosters were 30%+ smaller than today's bloated rosters.
Those true old warriors played 60 minutes thru all adverse conditions plus injuries, and there was no specialists on certain downs, whoever survived these epic battles won well deserved.

The Raiders DB's would bully Cinci's receivers, but their defensive line was good enough to put considerable pressure on Stabler...which wasn't easy to do.

Shea, RFK, and Memorial (amongst others) had that natural grass plus dirt infield which quickly turned to mud in inclement weather. The fans were also very close to the field of play. Notice the NY fans jumping into the end zone when a Jets player scored. Crazy times.

It's amazing that Mike Boryla made the '75 Pro Bowl team. I remember watching him throw 2 TD's in the final minutes to lead the NFC to victory.

Shea Stadium field looked bad on a good day, the Buffalo-Jets game is one of the worst fields I've seen the Jets play on there.
A lot of dusty games at Shea with that baseball infield, too. Tough place for a QB to play

The only thing bad about the football back then with these people trying to win the oldest man trophy. Was that from players having to walk across country to next road game up hill both ways in 39 feet of snow & temps as low as -78 + wind chill, degrees & as hot as 159 degrees + humidity.
So players where slow & tired by time of game !
It's possible. One thing is for certain, the old timers didn't get substituted for in 3rd and longs or goal line situations. The rosters were 30%+ smaller than today's bloated rosters.
Those true old warriors played 60 minutes thru all adverse conditions plus injuries, and there was no specialists on certain downs, whoever survived these epic battles won well deserved.

Cool stat on Marvin Cobb (24) - scoring on a 52 yard int. return on his first NFL play. And - it won the game for Cincinnati. The Bengals and Raiders played some doozies in those days.
The Raiders DB's would bully Cinci's receivers, but their defensive line was good enough to put considerable pressure on Stabler...which wasn't easy to do.
@@markgardner9460 Stabler was a very clutch quarterback,but after 78 he lost it pretty quickly,and just 5 years after winning Super Bowl XI he was pretty much a pedestrian quarterback ( I liked him, just expressing my opinion!)

@@HAL9000s3 The main issue some have with Namath is his high number of inter eptions to td passes, but he played on bad teams after '69 and was forced to throw...and he threw long passes which have a greater chance of being intercepted. Thanks for following up with me!

@@HAL9000s3 I think Buc Head Coach John McKay said it best - completion % doesn't mean anything...big splash plays are the difference makers in games...not dozens of 4 to 7 yard completions like in today's game.
Shea, RFK, and Memorial (amongst others) had that natural grass plus dirt infield which quickly turned to mud in inclement weather. The fans were also very close to the field of play. Notice the NY fans jumping into the end zone when a Jets player scored. Crazy times.
I'm glad that you noted that about the Jets fans roaming into the end zone after Barkum's TD (I think it was his). Security on break? Imagine that happening today?
I wished that existed in Madden games as a throwback feature.
