Today we’re in Opatija! A beautiful, elegant coastal town in Croatia. We had a stunning, clear day to explore, and saw so much of the city!
Opatija is located in Kvarner Bay, which is located at the foot of Mount Ucka. It’s about 15km from the bigger port city of Rijeka.
The Maiden of the Seagull
This statue has become a symbol of Opatija. Anyone that comes here definitely has a picture with the Maiden of the Seagull! It was built in 1956 by the famous Croatian sculptor, Zvonko Car. There was actually a fish in the seagull’s mouth when the statue was first made, but it mysteriously disappeared, and they don’t know exactly how. It’s believed that it was either stolen, or washed away by the sea. I think it was probably stolen, what about you?
The Lungomare
This is the beautiful and famous promenade that lines the seafront in Opatija. It actually goes on for about 12km, and connects two other villages on either side of Opatija. It’s a stunning place for a walk, a stroll, and they even have great little look out points that you can just sit at and relax before continuing on your way.
Hotel Kvarner
This is the oldest hotel on the East side of the Adriatic Sea. It was actually built in 1844 and was originally intended as a sanatorium to treat lung diseases. People with money would come and stay in this gorgeous hotel while they treated their illnesses. Opatija as a city wanted to be known as a health tourism destination, so when this hotel went up, many other luxury hotels and guest houses started to be built. Hotel Kvarner was really what sparked tourism in Opatija, which then sparked tourism throughout the rest of Croatia.
Villa Angiolina
This gorgeous villa used to be a summer residence way back in the day, but now it’s turned into Croatia’s tourism museum. It usually has a beautiful garden park right in front of it that is filled with color, and various kinds of flowers, but now it’s all been trimmed back for the winter. The greenery is still lovely to admire, though! You can just picture what it might look like with colourful flowers between all of the green edges.
St. James’s Church
This church sits in the center of Opatija, and it’s very important to the city’s history. It was built in the Benedictine Abbey around 1420, by a colony of Benedictine refugees. Opatija even got its name from the Abbey, because abbey in Croatian is actually the word “Opatija” so that’s how the city got it’s name. It’s very connected with the church and a very central part of Opatija.
St. James’s Park
This park sits right in front of St. James’s Church, and it’s a peaceful place to walk through, sit down and enjoy the immaculate landscapes throughout. The park is well known for the lovely fountain that sits in the middle. There are figures of Selene and Helios, which are the goddess of the moon and the god of the sun.
Hotel Milenij
This hotel has the best terrace in the city, we think! Great views of the sea, beautifully designed and decorated, and they have delicious cakes and coffee! Perfect for a little stop while you’re exploring Opatija!
The Chocolate Museum in Hotel Continental
Definitely the most delicious museum we’ve ever visited! There are so many different types of chocolate, along with breathtaking sculptures made of 100% chocolate. In fact, the horse statue shown in the video started from a block of 400kg of chocolate that was sculpted down into the statue as it stands now.
We really had a lovely day in Opatija. It really has so much to offer, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We come here once in a while when we need a break from Zagreb and a dose of the sea, because it’s just a quick 2hr drive.

1:05 - 1:18 ......"mirror effect"??
@@davorlekenik9563 I still hadn't fixed the "reflection" view in my camera at this point when it was on selfie mode lol I fixed it a few videos later, and now (finally) I don't have any more mirrored video :)
@@RoyalCroatianTours ...🤣🤣👌👌👍👍👋👋

I mi mislimo da je prekrasno!
Beautiful city! I’m visiting from Toronto. 0:18 I went to the chocolatery in the Continental and told the woman that I was there because of you. She knew exactly who I was talking about and it meant a lot to her that your video was so effective!
Another excellent video! Thank you so much. I am missing Croatia and my family in Vukovar and Zagreb. Can't wait to come back.
Thanks!! We love making these videos, so I'm glad you're enjoying them! :)
Really well done once again! Only problem is I want to be there now :-)!
Haha! Thank you and so happy you enjoyed!! :)

@@zrinklaz :)
Same problem. 😅
Lungomare is such a beautiful walk, gets little crowded during the summer but still very romantic.
Opatija is beautiful
I loved growing up in Opatija
It looks very very pretty, it reminds me of Italian luxury seaside places❤
Very nice, this is my town!
Love following you and Ivan on your tours.
Thanks Debbie!! So happy you're enjoying the videos!
My hometown ❤❤ I miss it everyday I live in Austria now🥰
This chocolate museum is awesome!!! Thanks a lot for your video 👍👍👍
Yes!! We loved it!
Thanks so much for this nice video. I've spent a few holidays in Opatija back in the 80's. One of my sweetest memories is the visit to an opera performance in the open air theatre in the park. I guess a lot has changed as well, because the chocolate museum is new to me. Thanks again. Hvala!
Opatija is like the Monaco of croatia, just went lol
Beautiful area !
Very nice video about Opatija, i subscribed to your channel!
Thanks very much!
Hi guys! Love your videos!
Purpose of glass of water with your coffee is to cleanse your tastebuds before having sip of coffee. Put it to a test and see for yourself.
Love your videos. We’re in Porec now and re-watching to decide where to go next!
Should've have popped in to say hello. This is where we live, about 100m from the Hotel Milenj. We apologise for the mierable weather you had to endure. Our winters are usually a little better
Wow, you live in an amazing location (and city)! Next time we'll pop in to say hi :) And I know, the weather was unbearable! Could hardly handle it!
Hoi John, we will spend next week the holiday in Opatija, wat do YOU recommandeer us What we must see, this is the first time that we visit Opatija,
Greetings from the Netherlands
Raijmond
@@nigel100paars Hello Raijmond, The video does a very good job at showing you things to see and do. You must get to Volosko, which is just north of Opatija and try some of the restaurants there and also go check out Lovran, which is south. I reckon the restaurants in Volosko and Lovran are better than Opatija.
If you driving, then please make sure you visit Istria, Pula, Rovinj and Motovun are must see places.
If you looking for some things close by, then drive up to Kastav... We always go up there. You will get some great views of the Opatija Riviera from there. If you need anything else, feel free to send me email at jmstefanac@hotmail.com
Trebali ste na volosko!
Odličan video!
I am so impressed with your videos! Great job. You guys are on your way to the best custom tour operator in Croatia. Can't wait to return, and you are giving me plenty of ideas.
Thanks so much, Mike! We're excited to have you back one day!! :)
Super video, samo mala opaska. Hotel Kvarner izgrađen je 1884, a Villa Angiolina 1844 i ona je vezana za početak turizma.
Lijepi pozdrav iz Opatije
Maybe the gull finally ate the fish. Loved your video, particularly the chocolate museum...
Thank you so much, John! :) The museum was amazing!
Great video of my hometown :) and yes...2 coffees before noon is just normal for us XD XD XD
Glad you liked it!! Haha, yes, I've learned that coffee is a way of life here!
Jako volim Opatiju 💟 divan video
Kvarner hotel looks very nice. I had to Google it and check out pics of the inside of it. The chocolate museum looks yummy 🍫
The chocolate museum was great!!!
Nice video thank you.
Одеа из красивейших и ,главное, самых длинных, променад в Европе ❤❤
Drugi puta kada budete tamo, 15 kilometara dalje nalazi se mjesto Moščenička Draga, isto prelijepo 😘
Odlicno.
Slijedeci put!! :)
The fish escaped to the bird and it was recently seen swimming near Lovran
Hahah awesome!!
Super video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
Bella Abbazia !
Hi Sarah,
My husband’s family lives in Malinska on the island of Krk. They have their own dialect and use a few Italian words ( like Pomidor for tomato).
They pronounce the town O pa ti ja.
My husband learned a few new things from your video (Abby is opatija).
My husband’s sister in law from Sali (near Zadar) commented that you speak Croatian very well.
I posted a question to you a couple weeks ago asking how you learned to speak Croatian so well. A distant cousin mentioned that I could learn to speak Croatian and still not be understood because of the local dialect. ( he was probably exaggerating when he told me there were approximately 20 different dialects on the island of Krk.)
Hi Liz! Yes, there are certainly many dialects throughout the different regions. I did most of my learning just by living here and communicating a lot with my husband's parents (weekly lunches for the past 9 years lol). I took a beginner's class (A1) when I first moved here to get the basics, and after that, I just learned A LOT of vocabulary. I didnt' focus on grammar, because Croatian grammar is hard and I thought I would get too discouraged if I tried to speak "properly," but with time, I picked up on the grammar, too (although I definitely still have mistakes). I actually did a video about how I learned to speak Croatian "How I learned to speak Croatian in 6 steps" See if you can find that one on our channel, there might be some helpful tips in there for you! :)
Property prices in Opatija next to the sea goes up to 10.000€ for m2 sometimes.
Wow beautiful enjoy couple
@ Royal Croatian Tours- there is also Museum of Chocolate in Zagreb ( i don't know if this in Opatija and that in Zagreb are connected)
Hmm interesting. Not sure if they are either. But we'll definitely have to go to the one in Zagreb :)
@@RoyalCroatianTours it's in Varšavska street
sara govorite odlično
Hvala Mara!
Sehr schön ❤️ Wir fahren dieses Jahr nach Rijeka...Ich liebe Palmen 🌴 gibs die in Rijeka ?
Super ste, pravi zaljubljeni par ❤️🍷
Lungomare and coffee. :) Everything begins and ends with coffee + coffee breaks.
Haha for sure! Croatia coffee culture is something I love here!
So if you have your chance to live in Croatia - what city/town would you live in - this one looks almost perfect?
And it is. Price of square meter of living space is one of the highest in Croatia.
Hey I wanna came to study in Croatia but i don't know if it's a safe place or not?
depends on what you mean by safe.
but its very safe.
people are very tolerant of others.
we have mentality, "do what you want just leave me alone"
Just discovered your channel. I was in Opatija in 1982. . I went to visit relatives in Veli Brgud. I would love to return because the area has changed a lot.
We love Opatija! And yes, I'm sure the area has changed quite a bit since then!
"Chocolate" and "museum": two of my favourite words! And in the same sentence... where can I sign up? 🙊
Hahaha right?! It's such a cool place!
Ako sam dobro shvatio, vi ste doslovno u "biznisu", imate "tvrtku" pod imenom vašeg TH-cam kanala.?
To mi se jako sviđa :)
Tako je :)
0:30 song name?
🇭🇷❤
Lungomare in Opatija is definitely not 12 kilometres long! Maybe from Volosko to Lovran but not in Opatija.
WEll, if you are on " Adriatic Tour " why not show inhabited and partially habited Islands, and Islands for 99 year lease or for sale?? There are quite a few deserted Islands, where there are still reminders ruins of settlements where original owners left, never to return???!!!! Those settlements are from people who lived there in at 1850's- 1900's and went to USA, Canada ,Chile, Argentina, South Africa. Many of those left as well in 1920's. If I would have extra few millions LOL Lol would come back too. Problem with some of those islands are, electricity and water. If someone can afford to install enough solar power panels, back generator and secure rain fall as water supply or even try to drill for water, who know, you may get your self bargain of a life.
Definitely planning on making videos of various islands :)
That cake is called Napoleon cake in the U.S.
BVB 🌹🙏❤️
seagull stole the fish from that sculpture
Nothing is sooooo boring place, go to greece, Italy, SPAIN
Abbey in Croatien Opatija? What? Are you just making things up?
This is the 2nd false "fact" you're presenting
Nothing., old town, old people, you can died of boring. Awful beach, hotels, people.
Berlin, Prag, Barcelona, Rome is 👍.
The statue was made by a dane who lost his wife to a shark
Unfortunatly the covid time with face masks devalued the beauty of this vid :( I know you cant do anything with it, just thinking loudly... If i was a autor, i would cut off affected scenes
Who’s the weird guy who never speaks?
her Croatian husband
Stolen
How rude and insensible you are. You don't have even little courtesy towards lady that tried to help you explaining the chocolate cup with rakija. She tried twice, but both times you just ignored her completely. For making successful video you need to have a manners first.
Voli bit u centru, puno prica. On samo mrda glavom🙈
