We visited Dubrovnik for 5 days this past fall and had the best time! Dubrovnik is a great city for families, there's plenty to do, and lots of history to take in.
We started our trip with a walk through the old town. The stunning main street is called Stradun. It actually used to be a canal which separated the two former settlements of Dubrovnik, but now it shines with it's pearly white stone all around.
Next, we strolled through the harbour. It's a great place to watch the sunset, or take a quick boat trip to Lokrum Island!
Dubrovnik's old city walls are definitely the main attraction when you visit, and don't skip this one! If you only do one thing, walk the walls! They were first built around the 8th century, but then fortified through the years, and defined more completely in the 14th century.
You'll get stunning views of everything all around. The old town, the orange rooftops, Lokrum Island, the Adriatic Sea, Lovrijenac Fortress, and a beautiful mountain landscape as a backdrop to it all. The walk along the walls is about 2km in total.
Dubrovnik is one of the main places where Game of Thrones was filmed, so if you're a fan, you're going to love walking through and spotting some of the places where famous scenes were filmed.
As soon as you enter the old walls from the Pile Gate, you'll find the Maskeron on the left side. It's a little owl-faced stone that sticks out from the wall. Legend has it that if you are able to stand on the stone and balance, then it's good luck. It's a fun little thing to do as you pass by.
Even though we were here in October, Ivan still took a dip in the Sea. Dubrovnik typically has great weather right through fall time, and the sea is still somewhat warm from being heated all summer, too.
We also stopped at the famous Dubrovnik Cathedral. Legend has it that the famous king, Richard of Lion heart, was on the way back from his 3rd crusade and got caught in a storm just off the coast of Dubrovnik. He barely survived, and said that he'd donate money to build a big church on the first city he stepped foot on, and that ended up being Dubrovnik!
Also inside the Cathedral is the treasury, and what's interesting with the treasury, is how it was safe-guarded. There were three keys - one belonged to the Rector, one to the Bishop , and one to the secretary of the Republic. All three had to be present and turn their keys at the same time for the treasury to be opened. Very creative and fascinating way to keep things safe!
Next, we took a cable car to Mount Srd. Here you can find spectacular views of the old city, the islands, the sea, and everything around! It only takes about 5 minutes to get to the top and the views are incredible.
My kids thought they could see the whole entire world! :) It's also a really special place to visit at sunset!
On our last full day, we visited Lovrijenac Fortress which isn't far from the Old City. Here you'll find a picture perfect, panoramic view of the walls. About 70% of Game of Thrones was actually shot right on Lovrijenac!
What's interesting about Lovrijenac is that it has two sets of walls. The outer walls were built very thick (from about 4-6m+), in order to get greater protection from any enemies from the sea. The inner walls on the other hand, were much thinner (only about 60cm).
They did this because they thought that if anyone actually did conquer the fortress, at least the people would be able to attack back through the thinner walls, and reconquer their territory.
We had a wonderful time in Dubrovnik! It's a magical place to visit and we recommend it to everyone!

I used to work in Dubrovnik before in an restaurant near the old town. And we did catering in the monestery. Awesome people. I m not from there I was born in Osijek but I love that town. And when you are a croat you can go to any town in the country and after some time you find out that you have some relatives there.

You didn't take off your shirt while balancing on the stone. AFAIK that was the point, guys would take off their shirt so they could get lucky with ladies. No point in changing rules for girls. 😜
