    As a 100% born and raised Texan myself I can honestly say Richter is the most “Texas” guy I’ve seen in a long while in a movie. Honestly if Lila and Richter had been the main characters of the film I would’ve enjoyed TCM 2022 a LOT more. The idea of liberal, school shooting survivor girl and (possibly) more conservative southern guy have to work together to survive leatherface to me is far more interesting a concept than what we got.

      @TheEmerald97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I would love to watch that movie, it would be interesting and with proper care and direction would be really good. What we got instead was meh. It feels too shallow and doesn't have enough camp to make up for that.

      That's what I thought was going to happen for a while. I thought he was going to teach her how to use the gun help them survive for a little while and he would die at the end and she would live. He was the only tolerable person in the movie surprisingly to me I was upset when he died and he was the only death that I felt anything.

    Hey! First, glad the podcast is back. Second, I am a subtitling editor that works on projects for various clients, including Netflix. One of their specific quirks is that character ID’s are meant to stay hidden until they are revealed in the dialogue or some other on screen text. So, if she never is referred to by name during any dialogue, this is why the subtitles keep referring to her as “Dante’s partner” (partner being generic enough if it’s never explicitly stated what their relationship is). Cheers!

    Two things I liked About this movie:
    Melody is super overprotective of her sister because her sister survived a traumatic event, she speaks out against guns and speaks over Lilah, it feels like the movie is saying “you have so much to say about trauma and how your sister is coping, lets put YOU through something traumatic and see how you handle it.” And in many scenes, Melody is frozen in fear, while Lilah comes to the rescue quite a bit. It’s a subversion of victims of trauma and it’s also commentary on how allies can sometimes do more harm than good, even if they mean well.
    The cinematography is gorgeous, I think despite the scripts flaws, the film is never ugly to look at, everything is shot in the correct spot and the kills are never out of focus, I also really love the sunflower maze. Im glad we get that whole sequence with Ruth because I think thats the best part of the movie.

    • @mellomike1928
      @mellomike1928 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Interesting point on Melody and her relationship with her sister, I never really thought of it that way.
      The cinematography was definitely a highlight, there were some really good shots in the movie, like the whole sequence where Leatherface killed Dante. But then there were also some weird shots like in the sunflower maze where he just pops up from the ground randomly, like wtf was he doing down there?

    Apparently, the directors had a certain story and script set but then a producer or several demanded some rewrites to include some elements that fuck up the story and leave very noticeable plot holes and they refused to film from those are-writes so they were fired and replaced with who it is.
    Also, the writer of this Texas Chainsaw actually has some good scripts, one is being filmed called COBWEB where a child hears people in the walls, and another called VIDEO NASTY which is basically a slasher version of PLEASANTVILLE. They were both good scripts so I think this movie was just an unfortunate victim of interference and demanding notes

But this netflix one was so cringe . Nobody behaved like they have a brain cell between them . the 2013 one was a ridiculous joke aswell but made me laugh at how silly it was . My take on this movie is that is a film made for no one. It doesn't appeal to millenials nor GenZs because that movie doesn't speak to them (us). Sure it has the slang, but those are just buzzwords thrown away by Netflix's executives. I loved the Kills in this movie and it was surprisingly well shot but other than that I really hated watching it. The dialogue and social commentary was embarrassing and could have been written by a middle schooler, the characters were bland and forgettable, "Try anything and your canceled bro." is right up there with "Do your thing, cuz" for the worst horror movie lines I have ever heard, and the ending had me laughing so hard I couldn't breathe because SPOILER ALERT....
    The fact that she couldn't save her sister from Leatherface because the Tesla autopilot was driving her away is so goddamn funny. Also Sally was lame. I know that kinda sounds like an afterthought, but so was her character in this movie.

    In regards to the deed scene. The sister is basically saying to Dante "This is really fucked up, but find the deed so that we can get away with what you did". Everything they did was fucked if they didn't get it at that point She's basically insinuating that they might as well do it.

      How I viewed that whole deed scene was if they searched the house and were lucky enough to find the deed then they can play off that it was their's and hopefully convince Richter enough to give them the keys back. That's how I viewed it, I may be completely wrong, and even then it wouldn't make sense because when they eventually do find the deed it's old as hell and obviously not a brand new document they recently got from the bank. Idk lmao

    • @betterthanyou9260
      @betterthanyou9260 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Nah, I honestly think she wants to know the truth. She wants to NOT find the deed so she can feel less guilty knowing that while they did the wrong thing, it wasn’t WRONG. It shows when she finds the deed and just breaks down. She knows they did a terrible thing, and they didn’t even have any right to do it. She even owns up to her part in Mrs Mc’s death when Leatherface catches up to her when she crashes the car. She accepts her death, she thinks she deserves it for what she did

    • @withencroftindustries3626
      @withencroftindustries3626 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that they were worried that they fucked up and tried to kick her out wrongly. That is pretty obvious. Squatters have rights, unless she was served an eviction notice by the police prior to them showing up. Now as far as the deed itself is concerned, the bank can seize property without taking a piece of paper from you. If you don't voluntarily surrender a deed they will just print a new one and give it to the new owner and the old one is void and just a piece of paper at that point. As James said, you can't prove a negative if you don't find something, but even finding it proves nothing because it could still be a duplicate and void deed. (Same thing for car titles) What makes this even more convoluted is that there is a woman FROM THE BANK there with them that probably could call the bank or maybe even has a map of their properties, MEET WITH THEM when they get there. So no, none of this adds up to anything clear... The script is awful at that point. (Still enjoyed the film lmao)

    Scrap everything involving Sally, except maybe the part at the beginning where she asks who Sally is at the gas station.
    Replace it with a cold open/flashbacks to the school shooting from Lila's pov, with her hiding under a desk or something. She has some sort of weapon, maybe a necklace/pendant knife or whatever, but she has a chance to stop the shooter, but panics and ends up getting shot instead.
    Have her redeem herself by instead of grabbing a gun, have her relive hiding under a table from leatherface, and when she has the chance to do something, instead of panicking and getting caught, have her successfully hurt/kill him and get away

But on that second rewatch, we noticed the saw doesn't start up immediately and they cut away for a while before coming back to Melody under the bed. When we do, you hear socket wrenches and work being done... so we think he took the time to get the saw back up and running/filled her up. That assumes it was stored without fuel in it but that caveat notwithstanding, there is enough room to allow that Leatherface cleaned up and refueled the saw before throwing a hammer at Melody...

    Couldn’t agree more with james’ first point, that it’s stupid fun.
    Like in terms of writing and acting it’s pretty bad like on a technical level, but the way they make the characters so unlikeable and have such fun kills made it very enjoyable as a classic slasher where you’re rooting for the killer

      I can definitely see that, I had fun in the first 2 acts, there still was bad stuff some characters weren’t my favorite but I liked Melody and Richter, when Sally was in the movie, that’s where I didn’t have fun I hated the movie so much when she was there

      Except that classic slashers never make you root for the villain. Only the awful sequels or remakes that came later.

    I can trace what genuinely scares me about the Texas Chainsaw franchise all the way back to 5th or 6th grade when I first saw a live woman wriggling and screaming on a meat hook over a bucket while her dead boyfriend is dismembered with a chainsaw. Since then, I can't watch a Chainsaw movie without the fear of what "could" happen having me on the edge of my seat. No matter how bad the dialogue, or dumb the character, nobody ever deserves what the characters in these movies go through. And I'll keep coming back to see what they come up with.

    This is why I love this channel. I will admit I was one of the people who rolled my eyes about being "woke" . After seeing this I see things differently with the movie. Things make more sense to me with more context when someone explains things differently

    I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's not a cinematic masterpiece by any means, but it is very entertaining. Compared to Halloween Kills, I'd rather watch this again 10/10 times.
    Side note: A lot of people giving TCM shit for people surviving gunshot and stab wounds are conveniently ignoring the very same things in Scream 5. (Except the chainsaw to the midsection...that was particularly egregious)

      I feel like every problem that exists in Halloween Kills is dialed up in this movie. Both have enjoyable Killa, but even on that end HK is much better. This movie's only saving grace is its runtime

    @deadmeat 49:30-51:30 One thing I have to correct for James and Chelsea is the part on the dead to the place. The influencers actually do find out that the old lady did still own the orphanage, meaning that they really just took the place away from the rightful owner. I just want to clear that up for those who believe that there was a reason for it, though its definitely annoying part in the movie

    The people moving to the small town were buying property to escape the big city life and violence that sometimes accompanies it.
    She did find the deed to the house in the woman's room.
    The chainsaw didn't run when he tried to start it. He took it to his room and you hear him working on it.
    Also surprised that nobody is talking about the post credit scene.
