A suggestion for calculating the volume of resin for this type of project: Dump all the stones in until you get the mold covered. Don't worry about arrangement. You just need displacement volume. Then pour in water until you get the desired depth. Food coloring might help. Then lift the mold and begin pouring into a graduated container. Fold the mold a bit at a time to hold the stones until the last of the water has dripped out. Now you know the volume of resin to use. To convert it to weight you only need to know the ratio between the specific gravity of water and the specific gravity of mixed resin. The manufacturer's literature should contain the figure for the mixed resin and you can look up the one for water. This would even work for complex molds that you are only filling with resin. If it's a double-walled mold and you're worried about trapped water, just place them in an oven for a bit after you've emptied the water out. Most silicone molds withstand a fair bit of heat.

That’s a great idea! I made a few smaller trivets using high heat resin. They were fun. I added some holographic maple leaves glitter, a little copper and filled up a 9in. round mold, after that cured I de-molded added a base of clear, then using a stick drizzled curvy lines of copper and dark bronze. As well as a few drops of red and gold alcohol ink. Blew it around with my heat gun until I was happy with it. The black rocks look great! That’s a really good way of making one without having to use high heat resin. They’re wonderful for protecting your table. Great job!

Ohh, what a beautiful trivet, Julie! I have always loved rocks...pretty much any rocks...but those sleek, black rocks are simply gorgeous! ❤ Copper is my favorite metal (I know, the label says bronze, BUT...!), so...my two favorite things combined. 😊❤ This will look so elegant on your deck's beautiful dining table!

The colors are perfect. Such a simple yet lovely and functional idea. Please post a picture if any of the birds peck at the stones. I imagine they will find it 'interesting'.

Julie that's very beautiful could you try using a slightly darker blue or maybe an emerald green pigment paste. I think a turquoise would look beautiful as well. My husband and I see it as a very large cookie overloaded with dark chocolate chips.

You should use some of the heat activated color changing pigment in one! You would see the reaction from putting a hot dish on it!! (They even have a clear paint that does the mood ring affect)
