I don't want people in the southwest to be discouraged about growing Valerian. I have been growing it in my Albuquerque yard for 20 years. Lousy clay soil and very hot summers. It is a popular plant in our neighborhood. Soo, it may not flourish at the same level as elsewhere, but you can grow beautiful plants. It is my tried and true plant and has surpassed many of the drought tolerant plants in my yard. Happy gardening!
It's such an easy plant! Our pioneer grandmothers brought it with them - I'm in Western Oregon, (8b) and havn't used mine for medicine ... it was happy in my clay garden soil for over a decade! In contrast to the root, the white flowers smell heavenly, and are sometimes called Garden Heliotrope. I potted up one of those chance seedlings, and brought it with me when i moved across town last fall. It's still in its good sized pot - I may divide it and tincture some!
Can I purchase some of the seeds? You think they would grow in southern Georgia? It doesn't generally the ground doesn't freeze anyway but it does get kind of cold a couple days a year. And it's pretty hot in the summer.. or you think a piece of root would ship
