How do you know what my grandma's purse smelled like? So you're the one who was stealing from her. The cops are on their way. You shouldn't have recorded yourself confessing. Does your cereal book cover all the awesome prizes inside the boxes?
@@RWL2012This guy obviously grew up when the systems released, along with many of the people who watch these videos. These video titles are geared towards us as nostalgic walks down memory lane.
I was a Saturn/ Sega fanboy owner. My best friend Josh and his Brother had a PlayStation. I remember playing road rash , ridge racer, Twisted metal. Awesome times
Even as a die hard Genesis owner and fan, I knew by 1996 the PS1 was the much better purchase than the Saturn. Sega had burned so much consumer good will and Sony made seemingly the perfect console for the time and had a ton of 3rd party support right out of the gate.
The PS1 just felt different from other Consoles, bringing Arcade quality convertions of Ridge Racer and Tekken to the home while also making new smash hits like Wipeout, Sony's PlayStation certainly Started with a bang. The PS1 era is probably my favourite time in gaming, good times.
I was born 79 I didn't really get into gaming until the PS1 came out. I just couldn't get into consoles that came out before. I've been a gamer evere since and owned all consoles from Nintendo,Sony and all Xboxes ever since.
I wasn't going to get a Playstation at launch. I got the Saturn in May 1995 already during the early release, but right before it launched i got to play a Japanese Playstation and knew i had to get it. I got it on launch day with Battle Arena Toshinden. I was 15 but had a workers permit and bussed tables, so id been saving up for a car. I had to take from that savings, but it was totally worth it, lol.
The 90s was such an insane time for gaming. First going from NES to the Genesis and Super Nintendo to kick the decade off was such a huge leap and then just 5 years later we get the wave of the 3D consoles. Capping off the decade with the wonderful Dreamcast with the ability to connect to the internet and support games like Shenmue that still hold up well today in many areas.
Not only did I pick up a Playstation in 1995 but I got mine on 9/9/95! I actually bought my Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation that same day. I was so excited for the 3D revolution that I jumped in with both feet first. I'm glad I did because too me, the 5th generation was the absolute best. Addendum- Like you Riggs I had to do some trading to get my consoles. I gave EB my Sega Genesis/Sega CD, Snes, and Atari Jaguar to get both consoles at the same time. My two launch games for the Playstation were Battle Arena Tpshimden and Ridge Racer. For my Saturn I had Virtua Fighter (pack-in), Panzer Dragoon, and Robotica. I did get a memory card for the PSX but I didn't buy a memory cart for the Saturn as it came with internal memory. I wouldn't get a memory cartridge for the Saturn until way into 1996.
Can't wait to see more PS 1 content I didn't get my PS 1 until summer of 1998 it was the most fun playing games I've ever had...so nostalgic for anything PS 1 lol... And The dual shock controller had just came out so it was worth waiting for...😉
I have a fun story regarding Cyber Sled: The last time I went to an arcade in my hometown as a kid they had Cyber Sled set up as a featured game, two sit down positions with dual joysticks each (the joysticks control the left and right engines) and it was 75 cents to play, back when even the sit-down driving games were only 50 cents per play. I took a chance on it though and I turned out to be a NATURAL. Dad left me at the arcade for about 45 minutes and by the time he came back I had only spent $1.50 on two 15-minute-long plays of that machine, about a dollar on some random games, and still had $17.50 worth of quarters in my pocket! :D
I will never forget the time I spent with my PS1 Demo from a magazine...(Twisted Metal, Warhawk, Loaded) when it's ALL I HAD at first in 1996. But I loved every second of it. Then came Resident Evil, Road Rash, The Need For Speed and the rest is history...
I took a gamble on the PlayStation in 1997 instead of the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn and it paid off well for me in the quality of games I got and me becoming more popular in school!
I was technically alive when the PS1 launched in NA but I was less than a month old. I got ape escape for my birthday in 1999 and it was absolutely amazing! WE also played a lot of Crash Warped and CTR and the Tomb Raider games... We definitely had it when dualshocks were standard because I didn't know there were non-analog controllers until like adulthood.
i remeber playing the playstation for first time summer of 96 at my cousin graduation party. i remember playing street fighter alpha and ridge racer for first time and blowing away by the graphics at the time. later that summer my older brother would get a sega saturn but also i would get to play battle area toshiden and air combat which were awesome in there own way. but the big mind blowing game would be resident evil i really thought i was watching a movie when first saw resident evil.
I have gotten this PlayStation recently. It was inherited and it is a November 1995 model. And I got some 1995 games in a box. I forgotten that until I got it a couple months ago, Thx for the post Riggs!!!
I've just picked up a PS3, and am collecting some games for it. I'm using the PS1 compatibility to pick up games like MOH Underground and V Rally 2, but also on that list is the Destruction Derby trilogy. Great games all 3 of them 👌👍
Jumping Flash desperately needs to be VR-ified and remastered for Quest 3. There's no other platform i can think of that would do a sequel justice. Get ready to ralph in your headset kiddies!
Its funny when we had to adapt to menory cards, and then after the PS3/360 era almost forgot about them again. A buddy of mine had never played Wind Waker, so he got the GC disc, popped it in his Wii that he hadnt touched in ages... then realized he didn't have a GC memory card lol
The two games I got for Christmas 95 with my PS1 were Mortal Kombat 3 and Novastorm. I must've listened to Killer Kuts a hundred times on it! (it was my only compact disc)
My introduction to the PS1 was 2Xtreme, Independence Day, and Tomb Raider I didn't get to play Twisted Metal until TM2. It's very interesting to see these launch titles.
So you're the other person whom bought the other copy of Independence Day on PS1 lol. Seriously I don't know of anyone whom bought that game. It didn't help it didn't come out a year later after the film release. The Lost World Jurassic Park was another lit game release.
Oh man, I had a demo disc and one controller for that first month until I bought Tomb Raider. I played so much of the first Parapa stage that the song still lives in my head rent free 😂
Battle Arena Toshinden was the reason I wanted a PS1 in the first place. I wish it would get a modern release of some kind, definitely my favorite "weapon" fighting game
I totally forgot PS1 was a music player. I remember putting CDs in mine and playing it while I slept with the TV brightness turned way down(like a night light). The Ace Combat games are freaking awesome. Probably the GOAT of flying games(not counting Rouge Squadron games). PS1 was great! I had an action replay that let me play burned games. I didn't take advantage of that nearly as much as I should have, but it let me play Fire Pro Wrestling, and DBZ games.
I remember playing Destruction Derby when we first bought the PS1. I was blown away with the graphics and also hearing a live announcers voice. Pure nostalgia at its finest!
I think I got a PS1 when I was 14 in ‘97. Saved my money and bought one when they finally weren’t sold out right away. I remember being blown away that I actually saw one in store
I got my PS1 in 1995, and remember my mom ordering it from a Sears Catalog. I also got Street Fighter the movie as my first game for the system, which I was so excited and then disappointed when it came in. But it is by far my favorite console of all time, and I loved the games on the system.
The early games for the PS1 were amazing honestly. I love the long boxes as well. I was sad to see them go to the smaller jewel cases. I have been collecting the long box games and want them all. Tough to do since a few are very expensive. But I am only missing 2 or 3 at this point.
Great video and such a fab nostalgic time for me. Best games around this time for me were Ridge Racer, Tekken 1 and Wipeout, which came out just after the launch date if i remember right, this was in the Uk anyway. Thank you.
I love Tekken and Ridge Racer those games were amazing. Twisted Metal was also great. I love the Sony PlayStation 1 It's one of my favorite gaming consoles of all time and I'm happy to have grown up with it. Cool video. ^_^
Back in the day, at one point in time, at the SAME time, my friend had ATARI, I had NES, SEGA, SNES, SEGA CD, PS1, and PHILLIPS GOLDSTAR CDI, and ANOTHER friend had TURBO GRAPHIX 16... and ALSO we could go to the ARCADE!! those were the days 🤘
The Sony PlayStation was when I truly became a bigger gamer! While I loved my NES and SNES I had those during my childhood when I didn’t have enough money to buy games, my parents rarely got me any for birthdays or Christmas, and I usually borrowed from friends. I had PlayStation when I got a job and could buy games and memory cards to expand my gaming library! And what an impact that would have on me for the rest of my life: especially when games like Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid eventually came out!
Memory cards were great for renting games, no more renting the game again next weekend hoping your save file didn't get overwritten. If you were even lucky enough to get the same cart you had last time.
Battle Arena Toshinden was one of the those franchises, I was surprised, didn't last long. I remember playing it at KayBee Toys and thought it was cool.
Can't wait for the 1996 video about the PS1, which for some reason is considered a controversial year. That was the only year customers could get advantage of a real competition against the Saturn and, IMHO, while the Sega console was an arcade ports beast, the PS1 was still deciding if being a strong console or a poor PC.
What would a modern Jumping Flash even be? The gimmick was woooahh look at this 3D world.. look how far away the ground Is Today It'd be like "So It's a game where you Jump? where's the microtransactions?"
Destruction Derby... loved it! You could get bored and put in the no damage code. Just turn around on the tracks and demolish all of the opponents with head-on collisions. Just a wacky fun time. 🤘
Some cracking early titles. Think for most people Ridge racer really showed what the ps1 could do over the competition at the time. Rayman was a beautiful 2d side scroller Gex was a port of the 3do version , i had alot of fun on it on the 3do
Dude! Destruction, derby and loaded or two of my favorite games that I can’t believe I completely forgot about. I played just about everything else on your list too but those two I can’t believe I didn’t remember them until you just showed them so thanks.!
making the jump from SNES to PS1 was mind-blowing. This type of technical leap will never be experienced again, I am so happy I was able to experience it first hand. It is something where any description fails to fully grasp the magnitude of the era. It is something that had to be experienced personally.
@@dwray729 True. I remember running Windows 3.2 on our old 486. Going from Dos to a fully GUI Windows was amazing. But, unlike the SNES to PS1 I was somewhat of a late adopter. It wasn't for several years before we got a Win 95 machine.
@Onering80 yeah 3.2 wasn't bad . I was lucky and had a rich aunt buy me like a 500 dollar HP at 95 Christmas that year. Didn't realize how lucky I was til started playing all those fps from that era and there was a ton of them.
I loved me some loaded. I was late to the ps1. I got Silent Bomber on a whim and it is still one of my favourite games of all time (not an early ps1 game though).
I got the PS a few years after its release with Final Fantasy VII, a memory card, an extra controller, and the strategy guide for Final Fantasy VII. That's all I had for the longest time until Final Fantasy VIII came out. Besides that I remember playing that purple PlayStation Underground demo disc. I think it would be nice if we got a remake of the Battle Arena Toshinden series; especially since the 4th game never got a US release.
Not too many things better in video game history than summer to winter 1995 PlayStation. SO many great games and new genres. Such high quality across the board. And the marketing leading up to the release was top notch with the urnot(e) campaign featuring Sony music, most memorably (for me) "Blind" by Korn. Thanks for the video John
I grew up in N64/PS1 generation, some of my friends had NES or SNES, but they later got either N64 or PS1. I got my N64 in 1997 (Greetings from Europe) and PS1 I got in 1999. As of 2000 I had 34 PS1 games, my fav. was Metal Gear Solid. From this video I used to own Wipeout and that's it. I mostly got PS1 games released between 1998-2000, like Resident Evil 2 & 3, Dino Crisis, Final Fantasy 8, Crash Team Racing, Tomb Raiders 1, 3 and 4...
Previously unemployed , I couldn’t buy a Ps1 until late 1996 , and by that time , I bought the fairly new releases of Tomb raider , Crash Bandicoot and Alien trilogy. I also picked up three games on sale : Doom , Ridge racer revolution and Wing commander III. Fun times back then too.
I passed on the PS1 since I was so focused on the Saturn back in the day, but I had a few friends that had one so I would play their's occasionally. I remember all of these. 😊
I've never owed a PS1, but my friend had one and those demo disc we got a ton of fun times from them. I always think Playstation came out a little later than what it did but what a time to be a videogame player
I never had one growing up. However I would see it at Target and fiddle around with it. They had game like cool Boarders, jet moto, Syphon Filter, Bloody Roar, and Battle Arena Toshiden.
I have played so much 1extreme and probably even more of 2extreme. Hours of racing around on those rollerblades punching the crap out of the other guys. Honestly the Street fighter the movie the game I would buy it to this day like it looks like it would be pretty good except it's over a hundred bucks. Pretty hilarious how Honda looks like he's wearing a dress
I also played the heck out of that demo disc and did not get a memory card until dying halfway through Resident Evil and having to start over. Saved up my allowance for months to get the PS1.
man I'll never forget the day we got ours! dad pulled us all out of school and we went down to the store to pick ours up! Funny enough I'd seen my tutor at the time doing some shopping so I let her know 'yeah I won't be there today we're kinda doing this other thing' so that's how that happened, LOL! I believe our first games were Battle Arena Toshinden, RIdge Racer and TEKKEN? What I remember of Toshinden is EGM2 had the move list for the Japanese version so when I got to try the in-store demo for the first time I was definitely prepared! we definitely had some of these probably picked up from the local pawn shop.
I still have my Playstation box in my home office. It has a sticker on it that says it came included with Battle Arena Toshinden. I remember playing that a lot. Then we got FF7. College work took a back seat. lol
I preordered mine and got that music cd that I listened to for a month. And I also rented Kileak WITHOUT a memory card haha. I recently bought Kileak for 2$ and had a ton of fun
I was 11 years old in 1995 and a die hard Nintendo fan boy. My brother rented the PlayStation from Block Buster for his birthday. And it blew my mind 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Battle Arena Toshinden was my favorite PS1 game for the longest time. SOMEHOW I learned the game disk could also be played on a CD so hey, free soundtrack you could play as a CD!
Man, the aesthetic of the OG twisted metal one is so sick. I really wish they would have stuck with that semi realistic look and the fmv cutscenes are so badass. They should have stuck with that instead of cartoony way they went.
Honestly I didn’t play PS1 on release day because the year after I was saving money for the fun machine but I did got a PS1 along with games like loaded, total eclipse turbo, mortal kombat 3, jumping flash, wipeout, gex, rayman, tekken, wrestlemania and twisted metal
I got a PS1 and played the hell out of the demo disc that came with it. I remember it had Intelligent Qube, an F1 racing game, Crash Bandicoot and something else.. My first PS1 was when they initially released it with a Dual Shock controller.. whatever year that was 🤔
I think Ray Man should have had his own tv animated spin off. The first games I owned that come right to mind was Wipe out, War Hawk, Tekken, Crash Bandicoot, and Metal gear solid. I was so proud of myself for beating Metal Gear which I rarely did lol. Road Rash was the first introduction to Kid Rock in the soundtrack that was really freakin good at that time.
In the UK thanks to the specialist gaming magazines, the Playstation had been hyped up for months, Edge magazine the main one, so the importers who'd previously done the Mega Drive and Super Famicom, were growing businesses and ready for it. Unfortunately there was a lot of average games early on from Japan, which today have aged terribly. The obvious hits though were Ridge Racer and Tekken . After the US launch the importers switched to importing your games. The Uk launch wasn't far behind but of course savvy gamers in UK stuck with the imports for the NTSC 60hz. By then we could buy any Japanese TV to guarantee support for NTSC.
I never had a PS1 and never knew anyone who had one, so interesting (for me) to see the way its early games looked compared to, say, the N64 or the 32X (which someone I knew did have).
It is hard to overstate how awesome the PS1 graphics were IN 1995/1996...most of them have aged terribly(although wipeout still looks great), in 1995, this was AMAZING, and unlike the 3do, the PS1 was actually affordable and had a ton of 3rd party support. Pretty interesting Sony's very first console was such a huge hit. In an alternate timeline, this would be the Saturn since Sony famously offered to partner with Sega but sega turned them down.
I got a PSOne in '97 I believe, sometime after I got a Saturn. A friend of mine gifted me King's Field II, which prompted me to get the system. Before I got the sucker, I got about two or three more games, including Ridge Racer. Months later, I got FF7 and anytime I got paid from my part time job? I would go to Ames in the same plaza (long defunct) and see what games they had. I ended up playing some unique titles as a result. Sony had some genuinely fun IPs they could easily bring back from the dead if they so desired. Why not bring back Cool Boarders, Jet Moto, Wipeout, Wild Arms and especially Twisted Metal? Seriously, in the right hands these franchises could be brought back and kick some serious ass. Especially Cool Boarders, considering there is a huge dearth of snowboarding games in general.

@@dwray729 The DOOM trend was in full force. SO many FPS's were released around then. Some good, some bad.
I never heard of or played the original playstation until 1996
I loved me some loaded. I was late to the ps1. I got Silent Bomber on a whim and it is still one of my favourite games of all time (not an early ps1 game though).
This was a great trip back in time with 10 year old me. I can’t wait to see the games we played in 96. Love it!
And that's all you needed my friend
Rayman had a 3D game already on the ps2 and on the gamecube and PC it is actually pretty good Rayman Revolution on ps2
WCW vs the World was the best wrestling game on the Playstation 1.
I think the word that was eluding you in kileak was "Corridor shooter"
I know it was 96, but playing Resident Evil changed EVERYTHING
Not too many things better in video game history than summer to winter 1995 PlayStation. SO many great games and new genres. Such high quality across the board. And the marketing leading up to the release was top notch with the urnot(e) campaign featuring Sony music, most memorably (for me) "Blind" by Korn. Thanks for the video John
Dang it John! Now I have to go get me a ps1 I forgot how much I loved some of these games.
Get PS3 it has smoothing option for PS1 games
Thanks for bringing back great old memories once again John 😁
I passed on the PS1 since I was so focused on the Saturn back in the day, but I had a few friends that had one so I would play their's occasionally. I remember all of these. 😊
Good video! I remember these games, and had some of them when the Playstation 1 came out! Nice!
When I got my ps1 I also got Rayman, Battle Arena Toshinden and Formula Karts. Great memories!
I got mine in 1997 with crash bandicoot 2 Bundle..
I got mine in 95 with mk3, battle arena toshinden and ride race and that demo. Love the nostalgia of this video
Cyber Speed had really great music. It was really cool how you could play the games soundtrack by putting the game into a regular CD player.
man I'll never forget the day we got ours! dad pulled us all out of school and we went down to the store to pick ours up!
Criticom aka possibly the worst fighting game of all time.
Totally agree though, Jumping Flash needs to come back as a VR game. That'd be awesome!
PS1 Time with John Riggs good times from 1995-2004 (USA)
I'm running out of other consoles lol
@@JohnRiggsplenty of games for each console tons of content
@@JohnRiggs i posted the ps1 startup screen just for you. i hope you have a safe day.😁😁😁😁😁
I still have my Playstation box in my home office. It has a sticker on it that says it came included with Battle Arena Toshinden. I remember playing that a lot. Then we got FF7. College work took a back seat. lol
Do Sega Saturn games you were playing in 1995 please
I preordered mine and got that music cd that I listened to for a month. And I also rented Kileak WITHOUT a memory card haha. I recently bought Kileak for 2$ and had a ton of fun
I was 11 years old in 1995 and a die hard Nintendo fan boy. My brother rented the PlayStation from Block Buster for his birthday. And it blew my mind 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Gex and Rayman i swear were originally 3d0 maybe jag titles. I assume the license holders realized they were on a sinking ship
Gex was on the 3DO and Rayman was on the Jaguar.🤔
I mean, if the work is already done and would be easy to port over, may as well.
you had me at your intro with the merch.. i can tell your a cool dude!
Battle Arena Toshinden was my favorite PS1 game for the longest time. SOMEHOW I learned the game disk could also be played on a CD so hey, free soundtrack you could play as a CD!
Thank you for taking me back to 1995, John! Great video! :)
I had a couple of college friends that introduced me to the ps1, everyone else just played sports games on it.
Man, the aesthetic of the OG twisted metal one is so sick. I really wish they would have stuck with that semi realistic look and the fmv cutscenes are so badass. They should have stuck with that instead of cartoony way they went.
I had that Demo disk, I still may somewhere 🙂 Loved it myself... and the DREAMS.
My first PS1 was when they initially released it with a Dual Shock controller.. whatever year that was 🤔
PS1 1997 ,the Console was really hard to find at Good price. Tenchu,Megaman 8, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, amazing times.❤
Half of our disks were demo discs for the longest time. Got them with a magazine at the store, and also got several from eating at Pizza Hut.
Destruction derby's damage model made the racing great, Staying alive was half the battle
Ill pick up your 80s cereal book. I consider myself a connoisseur of cereals from that era myself lol... Cant wait to get it.
I never had a PS1 and never knew anyone who had one, so interesting (for me) to see the way its early games looked compared to, say, the N64 or the 32X (which someone I knew did have).
Kileak looks like Duke Nukem!!!
PS1, I would get so happy finding out a game had full motion video, PS1 was FMV at its peak.
Loaded needs to comeback
I think I have played a Playstation like a handful of times over the years. I was a Nintendo guy. And on occasion a Genesis guy
I'm not 100% sure, but after watching John Riggs for a number of years, I feel like the major attraction is his overwhelming positivity
Gex was fun! I think the character was voiced by Kevin McDonald from Kids In The Hall. 😃👍🏼
