I remember watching Henry Rono when I was a kid. Brendan Foster was a great athlete & never gets the recognition he so rightly deserves.

Good old "Big Bren"! My first memories of track athletics were of Brendan Foster breaking the field mid-race and winning by huge 100 metre margins. Those were the 3000m and 5000m races he ran in 1973 and 1974. Looking back now, that's what got me into athletics at a very young age - it was Brendan Foster!

@@PrentisHancock1 yeah for me too I think
All the GB athletes of that era were "heroes" to me when I was competing myself & I loved it when my mum & I used to go the Crystal Palace to watch the AAA championship meets.
Hard to believe it was still a sport of part timer's then 😱

What events did you compete in, and what level did you reach?

@@PrentisHancock1 I ran the 400 & 4 X 400 & had started training for the 400 hurdles all at county level ( I ran for West Suffolk juniors) & I had been asked to join the junior ranks of what was then Essex Beagles AC ( Daly Thompson was in the men's 1st team then)
Sadly an injury to my knee made worse by still trying to hurdle & which finally ended in a compound facture at age 15yrs & 7mths put an end to anything like a "career" but I continued to run in school's events & my local club until my early 20's

My favourite events were the 400 and 4 x 400 too! But I never made it to club level - I wasn't good enough. So you got a touch of the Perri Shakes-Draytons - that's very unfortunate. Getting injured is a common hazard. I've suffered many too. Do you still do any running?

I recall Henry coming to New Zealand the year previous to his world record runs. Dick Quax and John Davies promoted an annual track series and dragged all sorts of runners down in their off season to put on a show , Malinowski, Paunonen, Moorcroft, Vainio, Steve Scott, Ray Flynn and many others. Henry tore up the tracks.

@@PrentisHancock1 From memory I recall that henry ran around 27.40 (ish) for 10k, which at the time was very good and got him invites to big European races and the rest is history.

For 1977, that's right at the top of world class. I'm not surprised he went on to break so many world records the following year.
