Looking back so many years later, it’s difficult to describe to today’s generation just what music actually meant back then. What a fucking brilliant time in the U.K.’s history Britpop really was.
I didn't know this song until October 2022 when my uncle, a big Verve fan, passed away suddenly at the age of 48 in a freak accident. He was at this concert, aged 24 - unbeknownst to him at the time, halfway through his life. I turned 24 last week, and Richard Ashcroft is performing in Wigan this year. I really really want to go... I know it'll be extremely emotional, but it'd be the perfect tribute to him. We picked this song, Sonnet, for his funeral. ❤
My condolences to you Leah. Music has such a way of attaching itself to particular memories and their people and places. I am 23, and have long sought The Verve (and others), in particular Sonnet and The Drugs Don't work during low periods of my life, songs which (to me) serve as prayers to soothe the soul in times of disillusion, dysfunction or despair and connect to something greater, and i owe Ashcroft enormously for his words and the effects they have had on me over the years. I also would love to see Ashcroft live, and I hope we both get our chances soon. Indeed it may be extremely emotional for you, but perhaps it may be a positive outlet for what you're feeling inside. Goodluck to you Leah.
Last night me and my mum hugged each other and cried as we listened to Richard Ashcroft play this song to us in Wigan. I am so glad we made it. 280 mile drive to get there but it was so so so worth it. I belted out every single word, pointed up to the sky to the line “looking at the heavens with a tear in my eye”. It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, and a lovely celebration of what would have been my uncle’s 50th birthday this year. ❤️❤️❤️
The way Nick McCabe makes that guitar 'crying' through out this live version, gives me chills.. Sonnet, definitely, represents the essence of what made the late 90's music so special and a better place to live in among great sentimental vibes. Also, I would like to thank every element from The Verve, for helping me out building the best memories I have from that time and for the person who I have become.. I'm really sorry for the apathetic world we live in today, but your music echoes for eternity and as a reminder that love can prevail within our hearts. Thank you, guys!
I love this song, and this version. Long ago, a great friend/love of mine from the UK sent me the cd. Yes, I'm old now. But...I think he should know. by now. For Robert.
My friend and me Looking through her red box of memories Faded I'm sure But love seems to stick in her veins you know Yes, there's love if you want it Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord Why can't you see That nature has its way of warning me Eyes open wide Looking at the heavens with a tear in my eye Sinking faster than a boat without a hull My lord Dreaming about the day when I can see you there My side By my side Here we go again and my head is gone, my lord I stop to say hello 'Cause I think you should know, by now

We was absolutely banging back then we was us brits. Oasis, ocean colour scene etc. The list goes on
Not just Britpop either, club music (Dance, Trance, Garage, Hard House etc) was massive. Real golden era for music in the UK.
We weren't messing about.
True This. They'll never get it today.
Happy happy days :-)
When I think back to this song, I realise this is a masterpeice. The passion in his voice overwhelms me.A brilliant album.
Timeless track

2:20-3:03 is as good as it gets. The tone of McCabe’s Les Paul🔥. Fuck, I miss the 90s.
White nights..
Magnífico 👏👏👏
My friend and me
Looking through her red box of memories
Faded I'm sure
But love seems to stick in her veins you know
Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
Why can't you see
That nature has its way of warning me
Eyes open wide
Looking at the heavens with a tear in my eye
Sinking faster than a boat without a hull
My lord
Dreaming about the day when I can see you there
My side
By my side
Here we go again and my head is gone, my lord
I stop to say hello
'Cause I think you should know, by now
gracias 🙂
