I love to show this detail: August 2:47 = “...get in the car...” Betty 2:47 = “... James get in...” Betty 3:13 = “...I’m here on your doorstep...” Cardigan 3:13 = “... and you’d be standing in my front porch light...” And she has a thing with the number 13... so: 2+4+7=13
@@kamallb4650 Don't laugh at us cause Taylor herself conditioned us to be this way when she always says on interviews that the numbers of dates that add up to 13 are significant and anything that takes place in those dates are not coincidental. She released her lead single and album last year in April 26 and August 23 respectively. 04+2+6 = 13; 08+2+3 = 13.
There are 4 characters in the 3 songs. In august, the side fling only keeps repeating her memories with James that summer.
My brother and sister in law were highschool sweethearts. They graduated from high school in 2004. They began dating in grade 12 and went to separate universities about 4-5 hours away from each Carlton University in Ottawa, and McMaster in Hamilton, when she finished school before my brother, she moved to hamilton and they lived together, and got married in 2011, and still together in their 30s. Also it makes it more adorable as they share the same birthday. They were born in the same hospital, mothers talked to each other walking the halls during labour. My brother is two hours older then his wife. They didn't meet until highschool! Then they had to ask our grandmother if they were related because her family has lived in the same small village of 500 people where my grandmother and grandparents lived which makes us related to about half of the people as some sort of cousin. Thankfully.....she was on the other half of the village with no relation to our family!
@@Guitarz4Lyf it was. And my family gets crazier with the being related to everyone since my step mother is also my fourth cousin. Gotta love small towns haha.
If you order the songs in a chronological order, they would be: 1st Betty. Told when James is 17, right after the cheating happens 2nd August. Told after their summer fling happens, we don't know how long after but we can guess it's months at least because the song talks about a past tense and remembering something that is gone now, so probably some time has gone by 3rd Cardigan. Taylor has confirmed the song is about an embittered woman looking past at her first love. Also the lyrics on Cardigan talk about when she was young she knew everything, which means she isn't young anymore So yeah we know Betty doesn't take James back, and that the cheating fcked her up
I am married to my high school sweetheart. We met the weekend before my 17th birthday, I'm 44 going on 45 in February :-D I feel like Inez is the "other woman" and she tells Betty out of spite, seems like a lot fans don't think it is Inez. It's a mystery! Also, at the end of this song she says the line about the streetlight it goes with a song she has on her Lover album about the streetlights with the arrowheads leading us home. I could be reaching, but she does tend to call back to older songs. I love your reactions!
I don't know for certain, but that would surprise me at all regarding the street lights Amanda. Also, thank you so much, and congrats! That's so cool, and keep up the longevity. My parents recently hit 36 years of marriage, and it's such a blessing to see up close. =)
Betty:teenage James perspective August: side chick summer girl perspective looking back Cardigan: adult Betty perspective looking back. Also: this is her Dylan-lile song according to Aaron Dessner, that's how she wanted it to sound. August isn't necessarily named Inez bc she was a summer girl at a beach away from James' svhool. I theorize that August has no name because the side chick is unimportant and doesn't even get a name because she is the other woman qnd he doesn't love her.
@@Guitarz4Lyf I think she is a high school rumor spreading girl. Thats just how I take it. Btw: James and Inez are the names of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's daughters. She is friends with them. It is rumored that their new baby is named Betty. Their daughter James is the baby voice at the beginning of the track "Gorgeous" from her Reputation album. Btw- Reputation is really good if you haven't heard it.
@@sparkythekid9750 Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds actually have three daughters, named Betty, Inez, and James. That's why some fans read the trilogy as queer canon, and because Taylor doesn't really use pronouns. 😊
This song was just way to much for me. The fist time I listened to it I screamed soooo loud when I heard the word "cardigan" 😂 The love triangle includes Betty, James and the August girl. There are some speculations about Inez being August but I don't think so. It wouldn't really make sense that Inez would be spreading rumors about herself and James. Plus, after listening to August several times you can tell that she, the August girl, is so sweet and just misses James, so she wouldn't do such an awful thing. Out of the three songs, August is definitely the one closest to my heart. Please, do not pause the song again right in the middle of the bridge. That almost gives me a heart attack 🤣 jk!
First off, I’m not 100% sure it’s Inez that James chested on Betty with. But James definitely cheated with another girl. I’ve always assumed Inez was a friend of Betty’s that told her about the affair. Second off, in August she says “Remember when I pulled up and said get in the car” and it Betty she says “when she pulled up like a figment of my worst intentions/she said James get in” which is a subtle but cool connection
Taylor cares about this person and wants to apoligize today. who cares about Triangle, Might cared more about this high school friend, not realizing still with her boyfriend .
Oooo, thank you for the recommendation. Once I finish this album I plan on making a video to help poll our community to see which one should be next. Hope to see you on that vid to help influence it towards the Lover Album. =)

It's clear that gaylor stans are always forcing their gay agenda to Taylor.
