Oh I love the Carpenters. Karen Carpenter had perfect pitch with her three-octave contralto vocal range. Other singers, her peers, said she was one of the best singers ever. She was also a very talented drummer, I mean excellent. Her death was so incredibly heart breaking.

She could deliver equally excellent vocals while playing the drums. She reportedly thought of herself as a drummer who sings, but that voice is what caused me to have a schoolboy crush on her.

February 4th of this year, marked 39 years since Karen left this world. She had such beautiful control of her voice. Not only did she sing, but she played the drums. I would love to see you check out more of their songs. A lot of their music kind of a slower type songs, but very good. I was born in 1965, and I grew up listening to their music. She died just a few months before I graduated from high school. She had a lot of issues in her life. What is so tragically sad is that everyone loved her, yet she could not love herself. I'm grateful that her music is here for us to enjoy for generations to come. It's 2022 and it's been so many years since she's been gone. I'm so glad you were able to react to one of their songs. I would've rather you had your first experience with another one of their songs, but this one was a really good song.

I was born in 1965 as well. I remember being at school (my senior year) when the news went around that she had passed away. I was devastated. She was, and still is among my top favorite singers. I sing low alto like she does and have covered some of her songs just for fun. I'm not a professional singer by any means. Nobody could match her. The world really did lose one of the most beautiful voices to ever grace this earth. Her story is definitely a tragedy.

While they tended to make the most "sugary sweet" music, we cannot ignore the fact that their songs were really good, and Karen had a wonderfully warm and pleasant, beautiful voice.
Others have mentioned her sad story already so i'm not going to repeat that, instead i just want to point at how loving she was and how much joy she and the band have spread across the world.
One thing is for sure, their music is here to stay, there will always be a demand for this kind of feelgood classics.

I was introduced to the carpenters in the sixth grade. We fell in love with her sweet voice and his great arrangements and then realized how powerful the media can be influencing even the most popular people. This was all because 6th grade (age 11-12) is when anorexia and bolemia start presenting and my male teacher wanted everyone in our class to understand how important we were and what a lie being thin or even needing to control something so much that it kills you can be.

She's not moving because her audience is there to listen to her sing. They are not there to see her prancing all over the stage. I went to a George Jones concert and when he was introduced, he came out and said, "I don't have any smoke or mirrors and I don't do any dancing around. I just sing." Some guy way at the back of the auditorium yelled, "That's all we want you to do, George. We came to hear you sing!" Same with the Carpenters. The amazing lyrics that Richard came up with and Karen's beautiful voice are the only enticements we require. In fact, a lot of gyrating around would only detract from the song because we would probably miss half of the lyrics. To do a bit of paraphrasing, "Those who can sing, sing. Those who cannot sing rely on smoke and mirrors." Karen could sing!

Absolutely shocked in the best way to see so many people praising a female alto vocalist, no lie! Karen Carpenter's voice was so deep and so strong, and tbh you don't need to know what I was (falsely) taught about the origin of her rich singing voice growing up, but the more my voice deepened into a naturally-Carpenter-esque singing register as I grew, the less I was allowed to sing in contrast to my sister, who was lead soprano in the church choir my mother directed. Seeing so many people praising a cis woman singing with a deeper tone rather than accusing her of being trans* like it's a crime is strange, ngl, but all the more welcome as a sign of the wider world moving forward into the future :3
Thank you so much for highlighting the variety of musical performances that you do, sir, and providing insightful historic and cultural commentary besides! Me and mine who are still discovering and appreciating art and music that was kept from us in the past v. much appreciate your efforts at curation ^_^

I'm a diehard Carpenters fan, have been ever since high school. Although this isn't my favourite Carps song overall, out of all their well-known hit singles, "Top Of The World" is the best. Nothing beats the SINGLES 1969-73 version, but both the original version from A SONG FOR YOU and this live take are wonderful, too. Karen sounds utterly joyous while singing it in that thick, honey-coated register of hers. It was a well-deserved number one single.
Incidentally, my top five Carps tunes are 5) Sweet Sweet Smile. 4) Can't Smile Without You. 3) Top Of The World. 2) I Can't Make Music. 1) You. Perhaps react to one of those!
    Rest In Power, Karen.

Her life story was an absolute terror with the majority of the pain was dealt to her by her brother and parents. We lost her because she was never allowed to be herself, always trying to please her toughest critics, the ones that should have been her most vocal supporters. I still get angry that no one would ever admit their culpability in her premature death. Yes, her fans were cheated out of so many years of her impeccable voice but far more important, she missed her life. Never live your life for anyone else and always, be YOURSELF.

Very smart comments. She's about the music, not a "show." Histrionics? Screaming? Squeezing the eyes shut, as if in pain? Dance moves? Pyrotechnics? Go elsewhere. Amazing what a studio can do. I once was able to watch a rock group recording some music. Female lead singer. They took a break, came out of the booth. The lead singer sounded like a 50-year smoker...husky, no overtones or brilliance. Amazing what a presence frequency bump can accomplish on a vocal mic, not to mention all the tweaking I saw them doing on the equalizers. That personal experience aside, watching some internationally famous singers also can be disturbing, live. I'm always pulling for them, and some are up to the task, but many miss notes and sing flat. Karen doesn't.

The following is an independently verified list of best-selling music artists (those with claims of 75 million or more record sales) from the second half of the 20th century to the present. Only artists whose claimed sales figures can be cross-referenced with music recording certification systems (the first of which appeared in the late 1950s) are included.
The tables are listed with both their claimed sales figure along with their total independently certified units and are ranked in descending order, with the artist with the highest amount of claimed sales at the top. If two or more artists have the same claimed sales, they are then ranked by certified units. The claimed sales figure and the total of certified units (for each country) within the provided sources include sales of albums, singles, compilation-albums, music videos as well as downloads of singles and full-length albums. Sales figures, such as those from Soundscan, which are sometimes published by Billboard magazine, have not been included in the certified units column.
As of 2017, based on both sales claims and certified units, the Beatles are considered the highest-selling band. Elvis Presley is considered the highest-selling individual artist based on sales claims and Drake is the highest-selling individual artist based on certified units.

Karens voice will always be my favorite musical instrument....
Richard Carpenter is a musical genius, and together....the Carpenters were master's of their craft.
Karen did not only sing and play drums, she could play other instruments as well....it should be noted that in 1975, Playboy magazine named Karen Carpenter "Best Drummer".
Others on that list included Ringo Starr, Mick Fleetwood, and John Bonham.....it would be Bonham to complain.
Later, Bonham would discover Karen was a Led Zepplin fan, and could actually drum out their music.
"Top of the World" is probably my least favorite Carpenter song (despite the enormous accidental success).
If you want to hear Karen's voice with all its stunning beauty....Carpenters Christmas Portrait album...."Little Altar Boy".
Actually......just about all their two Christmas albums play beautifully anytime of the year.
If you haven't watched Karen and Ella Fitzgeralds "Masquerade" duet from the Carpenters television show "Music, music, music"....you are missing a stunning and extraordinary performance from these two music icons.

Yes yes but how can you stand listening to this. I think I was over exposed to the Carpenters as a youngster. I remain traumatized.

Reacting to live versions of songs you haven’t heard before is such a rookie mistake.

The accompaniment in the version isn't as good as on other live clips. It seems to detract from the vocals to me and isn't smooth.

I no longer come to your site because I cannot see the videos at all. the spot on your screen where you are showing the videos is in front of your very very busy background wall .. so it's impossible to see the ghost-like video. Perhaps you can go to your own page and check it out. I do like your reactions but without the video part of the experience I'll pass. I hope you fix this and show the videos either in a different format or in front of a plain wall. If nobody else has pointed this out to you then it's just me that really likes to see the video part of a reaction or perhaps it's got something to do with my phone. Thanks.

Patricia, some music companies will claim a copyright strike if the full video is shown. TH-cam has programs that can detect the specific video clips and will give his channel a strike. Fading the video is on purpose and there is nothing wrong with your phone. This is done to avoid the TH-cam police.

have you been living on Mars??? TH-cam can BLOCK videos due to a copyright claim by a music company and then all his work is for NOTHING!!

@@kwasimoto2008 TH-cam's blocking of videos due to copyright infringement seems to be a bit arbitrary. I have seen people react to Hurt by Johnny Cash and they have the word in a huge font "Copyright" right over the video and yet I see other people react to that same video and they show the entire video, presumably with no question of difficulties due to copyright.
