So in the japanese version, Jack Frost is the same and Black frost is Jaaku frost, where Jaaku means evil/wicked but also sounds very similar to jack. I've thought that "Jerk Frost" might have been a better translation of it. Also there are SO MANY jack frost variants.

And to note, many people are overdefensive on Dragon Quest Monsters and SMT since Pokemon fans in some areas are kinda rabid. They call SMT and DQM rip offs trying to cash in on Pokemon’s popularity and it irks the original fanbases. The rabidness was quite more seen against Digimon, but it didn’t really let up for a while in the early 2000s and 2010s. That leads to an ultra-defensiveness on the sides that aren’t Pokemon. Shame, cause I am a fan of a ton of Monster Taming RPGs and saw a lot of it when trying to discuss these RPGs with people. Jack Frost: Hee Ho dood! The mascot, the myth, the legend. Jack Frost is ATLUS’ take on the snow fairy that causes cold weather. Love how much of a fluffy An old demon coming from Megami Tensei 2, this little guy has appeared in a lot of forms. His oldest incarnation looks like a literal snowman, but his current incarnation is from Shin Megami Tensai. He normally is from the Magician Arcana from the Persona Series and is a Fairy in the SMT series. As I can see, you know this, but he somehow spammed out a ton of variants. A new version is born almost every single game. I mentioned last time that he and Jack O Lantern are part of the Jack Brothers alongside Jack the Ripper. Strangely, in some games he naturally evolves into the creature Wendigo. It is hard not to like this guy. He is usually a friendly and kind demon. Often he even has holy attacks and will be one of the demonic NPCs that doesn’t try and kill you. The random encounter ones will be hostile though. Fun fact: It is voiced by Sarah Ann Williams, who voices Chihaya in P5, Whitney and Clair in Pokemon Masters and fittingly Hello Kitty in some shorts. King Frost: KINGY! The eponymous and self proclaimed king of the Jack Frosts. In comparison to his prior form, King Frost is often shown as a selfish and spoiled demon, going from a happy go lucky Jack Frost to something that is an ass with the power to hurt you if you disagree with him. He most likely is either a reference to a poem about Jack Frost or a play on Jack and King face cards. He came later than Jack Frost and appears in Shin Megami Tensei 2 where he terrorizes a town until beaten by the protags. His other appearances also have him acting like an ass, but some games change this a bit where he is either a benevolent ruler or just a Jack Frost who evolved, but maintains their innocent persona. He is of the Tyrant Race in SMT and of the Emperor Arcana in Persona as reference to his tyrant tendencies. He is often a very good demon and another one of my favorites. In the SMT series, he drains an element and comes very early. Due to the systems at play, draining an element screws an opponent and ends their turn right there. He even resists or nullifies the instakill elements, making him excellent in combat. Funny enough, his more mechanical design is a more modern design. He previously just had a white snowman body like Jack. He is voiced by Billy Kametz, know for voicing Inteleon and notably the Rotom Phone in the anime, Blue in Pokemon Masters and Maruki in P5R. He unfortunately passed away from colon cancer in 2022. Belphegor: Meet the toilet demon. Belphegor is the demon lord of Sloth. You might remember him from Digimon as Belphemon, that giant goat hulk that wakes up from the sleepy sheep. Toilet Lore ftw! His design is currently based on an illustration from the Infernal Dictonary. Another originator from Megami Tensei 2 as a boss. In Persona, he is of the Tower Arcana, but is also one of the demons that have swapped a bit. He was also the Emperor and Devil Arcana.. In SMT he has had many faces as well, Vile (gods who lose their original meaning), Tyrant (Emissaries of Chaos who lord over their armies) and Fallen (a standard race for demons from hell). As of now, he is often known as a Tyrant. His design in the early game was actually kinda generic. A winged blue demon yadda yadda, but a japanese only game Giten Megami Tensei Tokyo Mokushiroku leaned in on the king sitting on his porcelain throne theme and then they gave him this glorious design. The devs knew how memey he is and in SMT 5, they embraced it. He has interactions with a few other demons, all with humorous tones. Like asking a protective paper talisman for toilet paper or asking a water based demon to help him flush. Koropokkuru: An interesting demon based on legends of a type of small people that lived in Japan alongside the Ainu people. They had their own society and would be friendly, giving gifts to the Ainu. What ya didn’t get to is that it is believed that they disappeared due to an insulting act by one of the Ainu and have kept themselves hidden since. No one knows if they even still exist. Good noting the Korok’s too! This is a demon that originated in SMT: Devil Summoner, a spin off that came out in 1995. It hasn’t had many mainline appearances, but is a common demon that is part of the Devil Summoner series. It is of the Star and Hanged Man arcanas in Persona. In SMT, it is of the Jirae Race (Creatures of the land, more focused on protecting the earth rather than the conflict of good and evil). SMT 5 and P5R has included many lesser known or seen demons in its roster and I love that they included Koropokkuru. It also appeared in the Persona x Etrian Odyssey games known as Persona Q and PQ2. Andras: A demon of the Ars Goetia. The design is not too off from the known artistic renditions of this demon. He originated from Shin Megami Tensei, but hasn’t appeared much other than in spin offs. He was used in Persona 4 and 5, as part of the Moon and Devil Arcana respectively. In the SMT series, he is a standard early game Fallen, which makes sense as he is just a named Goetia and not something super scary and more well known. Funny enough, his swordsman design was used in another spin off. Note: The idea is that in Persona, the more well known and the most well known aspects of a shadow will be reflected upon how strong it is. Andras is a lesser known demon. The general public does not have a good grasp on who he is. Mention Andras and no one knows who you are talking about. Mention Satan or Lucifer and even people who have no idea about religion will be able to recognize them. The idea of if they are strong or weak also have influence. In lore, Jack O Lantern is just a dude with a pumpkin head. In some cases, even strong shadows are reigned in by the Palaces they live in and will be subjugated and weakened by the palace owner. It is how some boss level demons can just appear as servants to a palace owner. Isis: SIgh, yeah get the joke out. She is called “She of Life and Death” because she was pivitol in the revival of Osiris by gathering his body parts, repairing destroyed parts and reviving the body with magic. As a major Egyptian deity, she has multiple designs with her current one originating from SMT NINE, a failed MMORPG on the Xbox (and no shit it failed cause consoles at that time were really unpopular in Japan). In Persona, she has had so many roles and as a result ends up being part of the Lovers, Priestess and Magician Arcana. In SMT, she also has many races attached since they all fit. Deity (as she is a goddess), Megami (Consorts of chief gods) and Lady (High ranking Mother Goddesses). The Egyptian deities are some of my favorite designs in this franchise. They are often golden and framed after some beautiful Egyptian art. This is the reason for their awkwards appearance as her body is influenced by the artwork that the general public knows her by. Black Frost: BLACK FROST BABY! HEE FUCKING HO! Black Frost is a corrupted Jack Frost. I love the name though. In English, it is based on a phenomenon where hoarfrost crystals form and kills plants, which turn them black. In Japanese, his name is Ja’aku Frost. It is a play on words that results in the same sound as Jack (or Jakku), but means Evil or Wicked. If you like Street Fighter, you should know Akuma, who shares the word Aku. According to art, a Black Frost is much much larger than even King Frost. It is a corrupted Jack Frost that succumbs to its instincts as a demon, which causes it to go from a happy go lucky dood, to a monster. He is a prominent demon in many of the games as a side quest. As stated, there are friendly Jack Frosts in a lot of games and sometimes, one will become a Black Frost. He even appears as the final boss of a pretty fun looking 2D Platformer that involves Jack Frost and Jack O Lantern fighting through the world of SMT: Strange Journey Redux. There was one time where the power of love and friendship even caused a good Jack Frost to become a good Black Frost. He first appeared in SMT 3: Nocturne and was part of a prominent sidequest and he eventually joins your squad. He has always been part of the Fool Arcana in Persona. In SMT he has been normally part of the Jaki Race (Evil Demons or Wicked Ogres) for the pun I assume, but lately he has been part of the Night Race (Demons associated with darkness and nighttime). I love this dood. He has a history of having great stats, great movepool and somehow endearing you to it for being such a failure at being truly evil. In SMT 5, one is proud to basically go to the back of the fridge for the freshest milk in the grocery store… Yeah he is just a goober and acts like a little kid. It seems like the ones in our parties are just mischievous children rather than world stomping monsters cause in another continuity one slaughtered the near entirety of the Jack Frosts and the Jack O Lanterns.

Meanwhile, I'm a fan of the two Digital Devil Saga games. I can't say it's got the most crazy plot in the franchise, but it's a trip going into it blind. Or watching other people go into it blind. But you probably can't make a quiz about it. You can, however, show them Cerberus in a quiz.
It's pretty interesting to watch this, not just because it's fun to see how people who are not familiar with the series react to the demons, but also because of how different the comments and jargon of Americans are compared to Japanese fans of the series and otaku in general.
Isis is INCREDIBLY famous for being the wife and sister (because ancient egyptian times were WEIRRRD) of Osiris, the god of the underworld who judged the souls of the dead, and even more she's famous for RESSURRECTING HIM by going on a quest to clllect all his body parts after his brother, Seth the god of storms, murdered him and cut his body into pieces (sadly osiris' cock was lost in the ocean). So yeah she's very ROOTED in the ideas of life and death, cause she brought back to life the god who became the ruler of death (also commonly people mistake Anubis as the god of death but he's more like th grim reaper)

so, SMT demons. The only persona based demons are the ones designed by Soejima, and most of them are just mechanized version of Kaneko's counterpart. Even Doi's Konohana Sakuya looks better in comparison to Yukiko's.
Many personas (not demons) have no corresponding model in the main line SMT, but because the jump to 3D graphics with PlayStation 2 and re-using the same models many people think the persona pool is almost identical. (For example, P2 has great designs for Greek gods like Apollo and Artemis, that never got a design in main line SMT, not to mention stuff like Minor Arcana personas, like Arthur [Swords], Galahad [Cups], etc.) Edit: And yes, those designs wouldn't have a "Shadow Name", but one could just show a design of a porcelain-faced woman face pierced with a high-heeled shoe and make to guess her true name. (That example would be Callisto.)

someone may have said it already, but jack frost technically is better than pikachu in terms of game mechanics since in almost every game where you can do fusion (or have skill cards) you can basically put almost any skill (with exceptions in some cases) on a jack frost.

i think blackfrost is also unique in the lore as while there are many jack frosts there is only one black frost sometmes even the same canotical one throughtout multiple games, hes usually the highest level jack demon even above king frost though some dlc/gag versions of jack frost sometimes outlevel him by dafault

I just started playing Persona 5 Royal on Switch. Right now, I think I like Persona 4 better but, I have just started the game so I'm trying not to prejudge the game.
If it wasn't for persona 5 I would never have gotten into these series. And royal is just a significant improvement on the original in my opinion. I'd say finish the game both the regular story and the new royal stuff and then make your judgements

Jesus isn't completely in SMT, but the concept of Messiah is something that always has stayed with since the beginning of the Franchise. Basically the protagonist in the SMT are categorized as Messiah in some way or another, because Stephen (literally Stephen Hawking) states that the Messiah are product of the Great Will (not the christian god, YHWH) in the special quest of SMT4 Apocalypse where every protagonist before 4 Apocalypse are summoned in the Diamond Realm. While in Persona... the only Messiah is the Ultimate Persona of the Protagonist of Persona 3, but Messiah doesn't have any story importance apart from representing the whole Journey of the protagonist.

As one of the people who brought up the 'SMT came before Pokemon' thing, I never said in my comment that 'URG CAN'T TALK 'BOUT POKERMANS URG BAD.' I just thought it was a fun fact because the average person genuinely believe Pokemon invented the genre, There was the whole thing about people calling SMT 'Persona but more Pokemon.'
Also I think just using in-game descriptions of demons would do the job of a quick fun-fact of their lore instead of reading huge things of their full lore.

I’m kinda fucking FLOORED nobody understood Mitch’s “monkey man in space” reference. Andross is the name of the main villain of many Starfox games and he’s a monkey man, and he’s in space. (Although in some games his design didn’t particularly scream “monkey”).
In SMTV, if you talk to a mermaid with Belphagor in your party, he'll try to get her to unclog his toilet and make her very uncomfortable in the process. Iirc, she gives you something to make him shut up and runs away. Or maybe she gets hostile and attacks.
It's a very funny conversation.
So in the japanese version, Jack Frost is the same and Black frost is Jaaku frost, where Jaaku means evil/wicked but also sounds very similar to jack. I've thought that "Jerk Frost" might have been a better translation of it.

Jyaaku Frost being translated as Black Frost is fine because Black rhymes with Jack. If it was being translated straight, it would be more accurate to name it Dark Frost.

in original depictions he was drawn as seen here, except he was on a chair and not a toilet, cause the idea is that th chair is the epitome of lazinesss for some reason. He's on a toilet as like a joke on that as well as possibly the idea that people get their 'best ideas' on the toilet.

And to note, many people are overdefensive on Dragon Quest Monsters and SMT since Pokemon fans in some areas are kinda rabid. They call SMT and DQM rip offs trying to cash in on Pokemon’s popularity and it irks the original fanbases. The rabidness was quite more seen against Digimon, but it didn’t really let up for a while in the early 2000s and 2010s. That leads to an ultra-defensiveness on the sides that aren’t Pokemon. Shame, cause I am a fan of a ton of Monster Taming RPGs and saw a lot of it when trying to discuss these RPGs with people.
Jack Frost: Hee Ho dood! The mascot, the myth, the legend. Jack Frost is ATLUS’ take on the snow fairy that causes cold weather. Love how much of a fluffy
An old demon coming from Megami Tensei 2, this little guy has appeared in a lot of forms. His oldest incarnation looks like a literal snowman, but his current incarnation is from Shin Megami Tensai. He normally is from the Magician Arcana from the Persona Series and is a Fairy in the SMT series. As I can see, you know this, but he somehow spammed out a ton of variants. A new version is born almost every single game. I mentioned last time that he and Jack O Lantern are part of the Jack Brothers alongside Jack the Ripper. Strangely, in some games he naturally evolves into the creature Wendigo.
It is hard not to like this guy. He is usually a friendly and kind demon. Often he even has holy attacks and will be one of the demonic NPCs that doesn’t try and kill you. The random encounter ones will be hostile though. Fun fact: It is voiced by Sarah Ann Williams, who voices Chihaya in P5, Whitney and Clair in Pokemon Masters and fittingly Hello Kitty in some shorts.
King Frost: KINGY! The eponymous and self proclaimed king of the Jack Frosts. In comparison to his prior form, King Frost is often shown as a selfish and spoiled demon, going from a happy go lucky Jack Frost to something that is an ass with the power to hurt you if you disagree with him. He most likely is either a reference to a poem about Jack Frost or a play on Jack and King face cards.
He came later than Jack Frost and appears in Shin Megami Tensei 2 where he terrorizes a town until beaten by the protags. His other appearances also have him acting like an ass, but some games change this a bit where he is either a benevolent ruler or just a Jack Frost who evolved, but maintains their innocent persona. He is of the Tyrant Race in SMT and of the Emperor Arcana in Persona as reference to his tyrant tendencies.
He is often a very good demon and another one of my favorites. In the SMT series, he drains an element and comes very early. Due to the systems at play, draining an element screws an opponent and ends their turn right there. He even resists or nullifies the instakill elements, making him excellent in combat. Funny enough, his more mechanical design is a more modern design. He previously just had a white snowman body like Jack. He is voiced by Billy Kametz, know for voicing Inteleon and notably the Rotom Phone in the anime, Blue in Pokemon Masters and Maruki in P5R. He unfortunately passed away from colon cancer in 2022.
Belphegor: Meet the toilet demon. Belphegor is the demon lord of Sloth. You might remember him from Digimon as Belphemon, that giant goat hulk that wakes up from the sleepy sheep. Toilet Lore ftw! His design is currently based on an illustration from the Infernal Dictonary.
Another originator from Megami Tensei 2 as a boss. In Persona, he is of the Tower Arcana, but is also one of the demons that have swapped a bit. He was also the Emperor and Devil Arcana.. In SMT he has had many faces as well, Vile (gods who lose their original meaning), Tyrant (Emissaries of Chaos who lord over their armies) and Fallen (a standard race for demons from hell). As of now, he is often known as a Tyrant. His design in the early game was actually kinda generic. A winged blue demon yadda yadda, but a japanese only game Giten Megami Tensei Tokyo Mokushiroku leaned in on the king sitting on his porcelain throne theme and then they gave him this glorious design.
The devs knew how memey he is and in SMT 5, they embraced it. He has interactions with a few other demons, all with humorous tones. Like asking a protective paper talisman for toilet paper or asking a water based demon to help him flush.
Koropokkuru: An interesting demon based on legends of a type of small people that lived in Japan alongside the Ainu people. They had their own society and would be friendly, giving gifts to the Ainu. What ya didn’t get to is that it is believed that they disappeared due to an insulting act by one of the Ainu and have kept themselves hidden since. No one knows if they even still exist. Good noting the Korok’s too!
This is a demon that originated in SMT: Devil Summoner, a spin off that came out in 1995. It hasn’t had many mainline appearances, but is a common demon that is part of the Devil Summoner series. It is of the Star and Hanged Man arcanas in Persona. In SMT, it is of the Jirae Race (Creatures of the land, more focused on protecting the earth rather than the conflict of good and evil). SMT 5 and P5R has included many lesser known or seen demons in its roster and I love that they included Koropokkuru. It also appeared in the Persona x Etrian Odyssey games known as Persona Q and PQ2.
Andras: A demon of the Ars Goetia. The design is not too off from the known artistic renditions of this demon.
He originated from Shin Megami Tensei, but hasn’t appeared much other than in spin offs. He was used in Persona 4 and 5, as part of the Moon and Devil Arcana respectively. In the SMT series, he is a standard early game Fallen, which makes sense as he is just a named Goetia and not something super scary and more well known. Funny enough, his swordsman design was used in another spin off.
Note: The idea is that in Persona, the more well known and the most well known aspects of a shadow will be reflected upon how strong it is. Andras is a lesser known demon. The general public does not have a good grasp on who he is. Mention Andras and no one knows who you are talking about. Mention Satan or Lucifer and even people who have no idea about religion will be able to recognize them. The idea of if they are strong or weak also have influence. In lore, Jack O Lantern is just a dude with a pumpkin head. In some cases, even strong shadows are reigned in by the Palaces they live in and will be subjugated and weakened by the palace owner. It is how some boss level demons can just appear as servants to a palace owner.
Isis: SIgh, yeah get the joke out. She is called “She of Life and Death” because she was pivitol in the revival of Osiris by gathering his body parts, repairing destroyed parts and reviving the body with magic.
As a major Egyptian deity, she has multiple designs with her current one originating from SMT NINE, a failed MMORPG on the Xbox (and no shit it failed cause consoles at that time were really unpopular in Japan). In Persona, she has had so many roles and as a result ends up being part of the Lovers, Priestess and Magician Arcana. In SMT, she also has many races attached since they all fit. Deity (as she is a goddess), Megami (Consorts of chief gods) and Lady (High ranking Mother Goddesses).
The Egyptian deities are some of my favorite designs in this franchise. They are often golden and framed after some beautiful Egyptian art. This is the reason for their awkwards appearance as her body is influenced by the artwork that the general public knows her by.
Black Frost: BLACK FROST BABY! HEE FUCKING HO! Black Frost is a corrupted Jack Frost. I love the name though. In English, it is based on a phenomenon where hoarfrost crystals form and kills plants, which turn them black. In Japanese, his name is Ja’aku Frost. It is a play on words that results in the same sound as Jack (or Jakku), but means Evil or Wicked. If you like Street Fighter, you should know Akuma, who shares the word Aku. According to art, a Black Frost is much much larger than even King Frost. It is a corrupted Jack Frost that succumbs to its instincts as a demon, which causes it to go from a happy go lucky dood, to a monster.
He is a prominent demon in many of the games as a side quest. As stated, there are friendly Jack Frosts in a lot of games and sometimes, one will become a Black Frost. He even appears as the final boss of a pretty fun looking 2D Platformer that involves Jack Frost and Jack O Lantern fighting through the world of SMT: Strange Journey Redux. There was one time where the power of love and friendship even caused a good Jack Frost to become a good Black Frost. He first appeared in SMT 3: Nocturne and was part of a prominent sidequest and he eventually joins your squad. He has always been part of the Fool Arcana in Persona. In SMT he has been normally part of the Jaki Race (Evil Demons or Wicked Ogres) for the pun I assume, but lately he has been part of the Night Race (Demons associated with darkness and nighttime).
I love this dood. He has a history of having great stats, great movepool and somehow endearing you to it for being such a failure at being truly evil. In SMT 5, one is proud to basically go to the back of the fridge for the freshest milk in the grocery store… Yeah he is just a goober and acts like a little kid. It seems like the ones in our parties are just mischievous children rather than world stomping monsters cause in another continuity one slaughtered the near entirety of the Jack Frosts and the Jack O Lanterns.
I forget if it was Persona 1 or 2, but the first time you meet Belphegor, he's in a toilet stall. From then on, he's just on a toilet as a reference to that.

Isis is INCREDIBLY famous for being the wife and sister (because ancient egyptian times were WEIRRRD) of Osiris, the god of the underworld who judged the souls of the dead, and even more she's famous for RESSURRECTING HIM by going on a quest to clllect all his body parts after his brother, Seth the god of storms, murdered him and cut his body into pieces (sadly osiris' cock was lost in the ocean).
So yeah she's very ROOTED in the ideas of life and death, cause she brought back to life the god who became the ruler of death

so, SMT demons. The only persona based demons are the ones designed by Soejima, and most of them are just mechanized version of Kaneko's counterpart. Even Doi's Konohana Sakuya looks better in comparison to Yukiko's.
Many personas (not demons) have no corresponding model in the main line SMT, but because the jump to 3D graphics with PlayStation 2 and re-using the same models many people think the persona pool is almost identical. (For example, P2 has great designs for Greek gods like Apollo and Artemis, that never got a design in main line SMT, not to mention stuff like Minor Arcana personas, like Arthur [Swords], Galahad [Cups], etc.)
Edit: And yes, those designs wouldn't have a "Shadow Name", but one could just show a design of a porcelain-faced woman face pierced with a high-heeled shoe and make to guess her true name. (That example would be Callisto.)

someone may have said it already, but jack frost technically is better than pikachu in terms of game mechanics since in almost every game where you can do fusion (or have skill cards) you can basically put almost any skill (with exceptions in some cases) on a jack frost.

i think blackfrost is also unique in the lore as while there are many jack frosts there is only one black frost sometmes even the same canotical one throughtout multiple games, hes usually the highest level jack demon even above king frost though some dlc/gag versions of jack frost sometimes outlevel him by dafault

I just started playing Persona 5 Royal on Switch. Right now, I think I like Persona 4 better but, I have just started the game so I'm trying not to prejudge the game.
If it wasn't for persona 5 I would never have gotten into these series. And royal is just a significant improvement on the original in my opinion. I'd say finish the game both the regular story and the new royal stuff and then make your judgements

Jesus isn't completely in SMT, but the concept of Messiah is something that always has stayed with since the beginning of the Franchise. Basically the protagonist in the SMT are categorized as Messiah in some way or another, because Stephen (literally Stephen Hawking) states that the Messiah are product of the Great Will (not the christian god, YHWH) in the special quest of SMT4 Apocalypse where every protagonist before 4 Apocalypse are summoned in the Diamond Realm.
While in Persona... the only Messiah is the Ultimate Persona of the Protagonist of Persona 3, but Messiah doesn't have any story importance apart from representing the whole Journey of the protagonist.

honestly, DQM, SMT, and Digimon are the holy trinity of not pokemon clones that get constantly torn into and called pokemon clones at every fuckken oportunity by pokemon fans, SMT predates pokemon, DQM was an expansion of the DQV mechanic that helped inspire pokemon, and Digimon wasnt even a creature collector (yes i know theyve since branched into creature collecting games as well with the Stories subseries of games but they didnt do that til 2006 and even then its closer to SMT than pokemon and still different enough to stand on its own)
