By the way what a breathe of fresh air watching a squash match that was a god damn squash mash!! Didn’t kick out 10 times and go on for 15 minutes hahahha
I would love to see a modern-day wrestler name himself K Faybe and his whole gimmick is using all the outdated kayfabe tricks. Like he is a total throwback 70s or 80s wrestler. The thing is he is totally bought into it and is so unaware that he believes everyone else is too.. I will give you an example, someone puts him in a headlock or sleeper and he starts going out... After a min or so he realizes the ref isn't picking his arm up and dropping it like they used to do back in the day. so he gets irritated "wakes up" and tries to force the ref to pick his own hand up and drop it...all the while he is so committed to kayfabe that he goes to any length because he wants to be able to not let it drop on the 3rd attempt to get a "pop"...which in turn kills kayfabe at the same time.... A comedy character like Santino or Eugene
Microcosm is a little thing that is indicative of the whole thing. Like you could say Bret Hart getting screwed at Wrestlemania 9 is a microcosm of his whole career because he always seemed to reach the top only to get screwed. So the little thing is indicative of the big thing.
Thats the problem these days, instead of 'lookiing like' you laid it in, its stuff that looks phoney or things that are impossible to not hurt your opponent...
I would do moves that look like they hurt as long as I could control it as opposed to botching it! If I were a wrestler I'd do Greco-Roman/Strong style and only 1 highflying move.
what i would like to see is any memphis wrestlers that are still around, like lawler, dundee, rock n roll, etc. watch along with the host on youtube like this one with dutch,
I love how by today's standards this is "brutalizing" vs in the past where wrestling actually was safe and looked real and I believed as a kid. Only really see this much anymore on NWA, and not every match there.
That is NOT a jobber! Price is the future Motley Cruz... That's right, the arch enemy of the man himself, Jumpin' Jeff Farmer! I believe Cruz is still wrestling...
Dutch wrestles tweener leaning heel here--a style that would become popular in the Attitude Era, except this was less sports entertainment street fight and had more moves like a legitimate wrestling match. I was born around the time this match happened, so this was a bit before my time, but I used to watch stuff like this on ESPN during the daytime in the late 80s/early 90s. I think it was old AWA stuff. I actually like the now comparatively low production values and intimate feel of it, and my preference for that style/feel would carry over into Crockett and early WCW. (That said, those ropes, to use James's British English, certainly are "dodgy.") The end talking about the intricate business model of the time shows that pre/post WWF wrestling really was two different worlds. But I like the idea of a state "licensing" you via a "union" much as a state would sanction a bout with a boxer's license. As far as the unions, I'm surprised Vince with his independent contractor model was able to be so successful out of the Northeast with its more union friendly approach. Based on the WWF's later success, it would seem most logical to be based out of Memphis, but the wrestling down South tended to be grittier and have lower production values than Vince's product. So Stamford, CT and Atlanta, GA as the home of the two great 80s-90s wrestling promotions? I would have never guessed it given Memphis's importance to pro wrestling.
Ontario (Canada) used to have wrestling licenses as well. Didn’t get rid of it until about 2004. And it was the same thing, didn’t actually do anything, basically just another venue for the government to grab money from people.
about not getting paid for TV........I saw a shot video where a wrestler said that in the Georgia Championship Wrestling area that the "losers" got paid for TV and the winners did not. I suppose most of the matches were squashes so that make sense that enhancement talent might not be regulars and worked job to job maybe.
There was nothing wrong with how dutch worked in this match. This is how most squash matches looked. And dutch was/is a great worker. This is how it used to look youngins. Not how it looks today. Nobody can throw a punch or a kick. And it looks like a dance almost today. You can almost always tell that they are working together today.
The contemptuous little "Come on! Fight me" slaps to the helpless foe are a nice heel touch. Most guys today can't tell you they are heels without 10 minutes of mic time talking about it.
One thing I really like in this match is the way Dutch reads the spacing between him and his opponent, whenever there's a little bit of hesitation or stumble Dutch takes the opportunity to rush in and get him up against the ropes or in a corner so they can get something going. Great hustle.
Like they mention, Dutch was aggressive rough and a bit unsporting but he had that as his consistent style. Heel or Face really depended on the story they were aiming for and just lean one way or the other.
The license was a way of having control and to know who was in the area and it was away of giving some Muppets a job and away of paying them being the fee . It would be an ideal job for a wrestling fan get to go to all the shows and get paid for it ,and collect the license money and hand out licenses. Probably a part time job in the weekends and night time so the guy could have a 9/5 job through the week or a retirement job.
Shows how weak and mollycoddled the latest generation is that they look at this and cry foul. Wrestling is a rough sport. He didn't take liberties, he was professional throughout.
Wrestling the same weither your a heal or a face makes more sense. A person's style and moves wouldn't change, just things like interviews and maybe mocking an opponent and fans.
Towards the end when Dutch was talking about his "union card", what he meant was a state-issued wrestling license for the states that had athletic commissions such as Pennsylvania, which he mentioned. There was obviously no actual "union". The state athletic commissions being involved with sanctioning pro-wrestling were a total cash grab by the state governments, which is why McMahon came out in 89 or 90 and said that the matches were "exhibitions" and should not, therefore, require sanctioning by the state athletic commissions. Saved a ton in tax payments to the government bureaucrats in the state athletic commissions.
This match wasn't so bad. Look up Sgt. Slaughter vs Paul Fisher sometime. Fisher was, from what I understand, a rock musician who was in a band that played the old Lehigh Valley Fairgrounds where they taped Championship Wrestling and somehow Fisher got backstage for the tapings. They needed someone to work against Slaughter and somehow Fisher convinced them to let him be the guy. They locked up at the start of the match, Slaughter gave him a forearm across the neck or jaw, then put him in the Cobra Clutch. It was really over that quickly, and Slaughter really stiffed him. One story I heard was they paid him for the match with a bucket of KFC fried chicken.
Dutch looked like a jobber even when he wasn't. But that just goes to show you how good he was. Back then you had to have good ring phycology and know how to build a match because there wasn't much for entrance music or fireworks let alone the ridiculous ring attire that came to be..Dutch was a heels heel. PS Dutch totally has one of those faces that says "Yes my name is Wayne"
Wow, I grew up on Memphis Saturday Morning Wrestling, and I had no idea the top guys didn’t get paid for TV. I’m shocked that I never heard that before.
Maybe Dutch has already told us in a past podcast, but were Uncle Zeb and the later Zeb Coulter mean to the same character resurfacing all those years later?

MORE of these watchalongs James please. A future episode. Write it down. You do this format with Stevie a lot, it would be great with Dutch too!
To this day we're all waiting for the guy to lay his stuff in like Dutch told him to.
There's a cut in the middle of the footage and it seems theres a chunk of the match missing. That might be where Price laid his stuff in lol.
@danwilliams4051 uncut version. Price turns into one punch man and knocks Dutch out.
The dude got two shots to the head in. While being pulverized.
Dutch if you see this i just wanted to say thank you for the good memories of watching you back in the day.
Dutch 'educates' an 'enhancement talent'.
Dutch jobbed to Harley Race in like 43 seconds on Pro Wrestling USA circa late 1984.
Dutch in Memphis is a top grade heel, Dutch anywhere else is a journeymen's journeymen, so good in the ring and makes everything look so real.
Much like how Jerry Lawler is despised everywhere but Memphis, where he is the beloved babyboy of the people for all time
@@thegunslinger8806 all he was in mid Atlantic and Georgia wrestling was an idiot with a bullwhip that followed black jack mulligan around ....

50 years ago that’s ALL you saw on tv. It was very rare to see a premium match, and those were shown a minimum of a week later.
Wow I just notice this that this is the first match I ever saw with Dutch mantell and guess what we seen it together so that was cool
"We were all friends in the back..."
Dutch just single-handedly killed kayfabe. Don't let Cornette see this.
but you didnt know that back then
At least he wasn't busted for cocaine with the guy he was feuding with.
Kayfabe has been killed off more times than Jason vorhees...it's grave gets pissed on everyday ....women's wrestling is massive proof of this

Hey James, you are correct on the ropes. They were steel cables covered with green garden hose.
Is this a joke or real?
@randomtees Real. We used the ropes on our ring back in the 80s here in Kentucky. Cheaper to buy water hose than hydraulic hose.

DIRTY AND LAWLER were born on the same date : November 29, 1949.
