The serve is so complex, but I like how you break down this shot. My coach says my technique is good, but he just tells me to commit more. I'm not really making any progress and getting frustrated with it. I'm playing within my limits to try to get it in the box instead of getting the technique nailed. Your videos are helping massively between my lessons/games.
"Commit more," isn't observable, measurable, or ultimately actionable. Maybe it works if you're a 5.0 player with solid grooved strokes. I would be frustrated too.
UNBELIEVEABLE!! I have taken a number of serve lessons from several pros. No pro has been able to break the serve motion down the way you did. I just tried the motion and hit the box fast and straight. Thank you so much. You have invigorated my game and enhanced the joy of playing!
I've watched a few 'how to serve' videos and this one is by far the best. The breakdown of the technique with accompanying videos is amazing. Really appreciated the tips for grip as well!
Ian you are the best and the easiest instructor to learn from! Believe me, online there are many but no one has the holy gift that you have when clearly explain "concepts and how to" that are not easy at all normally to understand! Congratulation from Rome Italy, i follow all your videos and im really looking forward to improve quickly since im not anymore a teen ager! :-)
I'm in south korea, and my couch don't know how to teach THE FUNDEMENTAL MECHANISM OF SERVE. My shoulder is sick and tired of wrong motion. I'm going to practice a lot and tell you how it works. Thanks a lot. I'm your new subscriber~
This is an excellent example of "leading with the elbow". This part of the service is so similar to a throwing motion. I think some of my favorite youtube coaches miss the forest for the trees when they say "the serve is nothing like a throwing motion", because they have important stuff in common! Leading with the elbow is one example that is often missed because of how fast they happen in tennis and baseball. Maybe those coaches haven't analysed baseball pitchers in slow motion. Edit: It also describes pronation very naturally and intuitively.
I see players who won't come to TH-cam to learn how to hit the ball, maybe consciously or unconsciously believing free stuff isn't worth their time. Yet, with no other coaching available, your channel and others have fast tracked my return to the game after 40 years away from it. More than just beginners can benefit from the lessons so many great tennis channels have posted.
I watched this yesterday while on the court. The next day, I came out and played my doubles match following the progression, and my serve immediately got better.
I agree, perfect video, no one has explained these important arm actions so exactly. Always hear the term of "like throwing a ball" and that's all, but this here is the deal.
I've watched so many videos to try and get my serves right, and this breaks down everything so nicely! I want to unlearn everything and start over! Thank you!👌🏿
As a new player I was having a lot of difficulty with the serve but this video changed everything! I literally mean in just one day I was able to get most of my serves in the box and it really boosted my confidence as well. Thank you so much!!!
Great instructions. I watched this a few years back, recorded my practice, go back to the instructions, corrected my mistake and it worked like a charm. The fundamentals were spot on 👌🏾.
One of the best lessons taught on service. I followed and you will not believe, I can serve with 100% confidence. I could achieve 10/10 clean serves this morning. I can share my video if there is a WhatsApp number at your end. Many thanks to you, Ian.
My serve is frustratingly inconsistent; the ball goes into the net or goes long more than 70% of the time. I found your excellent video when looking for help in rebuilding my serve the correct way. You have a gift for communicating clearly and simply. Your video has inspired me to go out the courts first thing in the morning and practice these drills. Thank you!
Glad to go back to this video as serve wasnt good, my racket drop never gets into correct slot position instead touches opposite side of back, if i understand correctly as you begin racket drop shoulder needs to turn simultaneously, my shoulder turn has been a little late which makes serve ineffective, great basics video!
Wow - that was an excellent explanation of the serve. This is a very weak part to my game - doesn't help I never learned how to throw. Your eloquent explanation will certainly help me through the motion - I am goint to start practicing in my living room!
Wow, there´s a lot of tennis serve videos out there, but this is second to none the best video on the basics of the serve i´ve seen! - Greetings from Denmark
The fact that you get A LOT of very focused info squeezed into less than 10 minutes, you really must have planned this video ;-) The simplicity, especially the "out, in, out" dividing the serve into three parts. Thinking of it this way, the serve movement is very easy to understand. You could also think (if the court is in front of you) "left, right, left" or "left right HIT" or "up, down, up" or maybe say "the serve consists of four parts; 1: toss, 2: racket up (pointing right/out) 3: racket down (pointing left/in) 4: hit" Or whatever makes the most sense to you, doesn't really matter, if you´ve seen the video you understand it ;-) As I understand, at this point of my learning curve (hope its a curve!), all you need to add to the above mentioned is some (more) upper body rotation, shoulder tilt (combined with knee bend), and remember to be loose (to get a lot of acceleration) And then, of course, as all the elements interfere with each other, fluidity/rhythm is the final - and by far most difficult! - element I videotaped myself to see what seems to work for me, and correct my errors. I noticed I take my racket arm up high synchronized with the tossing arm, getting a very bad trophy pose, and a bad toss, so I try to get rid of that motion by tossing before I bring up the racket, just bringing it a bit sideways up with the toss, NOT getting the elbow over shoulder height, and then doing the trophy pose-racket drop-hit the ball in ONE movement. That way seems to work a lot better for me :-) I stopped working on accuracy, speed etc, instead at the moment I focus 100% on finding "my own rhythm". Including consistency! I have a lot of fun working on my serve, analyzing my video recordings, and trying to progress with the help of your videos, so thanks a lot for those, REALLY helpfull! Best, Joakim
Thank you for the video! I never practiced the serve and mostly just rallied. I’ve tried these techniques twice and it’s going to take a lot of practice. I still struggle with the timing. The second time I made the mistake of going through the full motion when I should have started with the racket in the elevated position like you demonstrated. Hopefully I will get the hang of it soon. It’s so frustrating! The inconsistent ball makes the timing even more difficult. But I will keep at it. Thanks!
I really needed this right now, I just started playing tennis for the first time ever about 2 weeks ago at school and my first match is on Monday, it’s Thursday. I subbed, thanks for the help!
Thank you for this. I am helping coach the local high school freshman and JV tennis team. Breaking down the throwing motion and converting that to a serving motion has been a huge help to them. If I could just keep them in a continental grip rather than switching to a frying pan grip after two serves.
Amazing easy tips, thanks! Once we got to the end point and hitting in the box consistently, then only we try to jump for more impact height ? Just a beginner, can't play anywhere at all due to Covid in Asia ATM . .
Great video man! Such a detailed, coherent, understandable and step-by-step explanation of something as abstract as the biomechanics of a movement that you have never performed. Thanks a lot!!!
Thank you. I'm looking forward to try this routine. *** The most complex thing for me (as a person who tried to server for about a solid half an hour) is to try to find a proper angle the force should be applied with. It's not a very common thing in life to throw smth for a position above the head, trying to place a hit in some range. And it becomes a bit more coprehensive when one have to do it with some tools (like a racket) rather than a part of the body... an extra height, provided by a length of a racket, helps a bit tho. I quite sure it's matter of time to get used to this procedure. But it's a relatively complex thing even on a initial level (without a strong impulse and different spins).
I like how you performed this right-handed (your non-dominant hand) to more closely simulate a beginner learning the throwing and serving motion. Yep, I noticed.
I practiced my serves at my work(school) with a foam paddle equivalent to a junior racquet and a plastic ball with holes and then a regular tennis ball. I felt confident and consistent.
good demonstration - will you think about doing a follow up vid where you talk about keeping a solid foundation (no happy feet!) through the basic service sequence? Thumbs up BTW
Genial!!! Me encantó la didáctica!!! Me ayuda muchísimo!!!!!!!!! Saludos desde Argentina y muchas gracias por compartir tus valiosos conocimientos y práctica de una forma tan clara!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great info. I hit the ball pretty well with all the other strokes except the serve and overhead. Now I plan on starting from scratch and learning to hit a proper serve. Keep up the great videos. Most players don't use proper serving technique, but instead just "push" the serve in. Thanks

Ian, thank God u created this video. I will forever watch this over and over again. God bless you
Thanks for this excellent lesson!! my son referred me to this video, really the best!
The only video I watched so far that really helped me understand a basic serve. Thanks for the great teaching moment !
Great video, super for people new to tennis!
Great instructions. I watched this a few years back, recorded my practice, go back to the instructions, corrected my mistake and it worked like a charm. The fundamentals were spot on 👌🏾.

Well said present comment on the serve
Easiest and Most Effective Serve!I will be using this serve technique in my first middle school game I will let you know how it goes!!
How’d it go bro

If you keep missing and can’t find a way to improve. Just tap the ball and hit it lightly so you can get it in
Fantastic video! I now understand where my issue is and how to remedy it. I wish I had discovered this tutorial much earlier.
Hi, coach. This video help me a lot, especially the palm outside , inside and outside idea. Thanks.
I've struggled for years with serving and after this it worked like a charm!
Nice video. Cool set up. I'm ready to take it to the court.
Very good instruction thank you. Off to practice.
practising in my room and without thrwoing the ball already note the difference! thanks!!

Thanks this video. My serve is better than before I watched it.
Great teaching!
This video helped me so much. I will aim for consistency with my serve, then add power

Most welcome!
That was beautifully done! The best explanation of the service motion by far! Great analysis. Much appreciated Ian!
This is the best video I found at internet about how serve properly!! Great video!! Thanks for your time helping us to improve our tennis!!
this was so helpful oh my god i noticed an insane difference within like 15 minutes
Nice Wilson Burn Racket! I have the same one
It's a great frame!
THX IAN. I had the problem that my "serving arm" came up to early and the "how to through a ball" part solve my problem.
That's great to hear, Patrick! -Ia
Thank you.
I'm looking forward to try this routine.

Awesome, straight forward and easy to follow steps to hit a good consistent serve. Thank you!
You're very welcome, New Life! Which part was most helpful to you? -Ian
You make it look so easy
Excellent!!!! Thanks
Excellent! Helped me so much after recording myself on video, I was able to better understand what you are teaching here.

Thanks for watching, Todd!
The footage was flipped, it is clearly visible....
This guy Ian is an intelligent force to be reckoned with!
Can't wait to try it! Thanks!
I’ve been playing for like 5 years and my serve really sucks but I already can feel a difference after just practice the ball thing
I practiced my serves at my work(school) with a foam paddle equivalent to a junior racquet and a plastic ball with holes and then a regular tennis ball. I felt confident and consistent.
Keep up the good work, Danny! -Ian
That is a great idea.
How is it going?
you are a freaking guru! no wonder you got no dislikes on this video. probably the best video about serve in tennis.
Appreciate that very much, Samat. -Ian
good demonstration - will you think about doing a follow up vid where you talk about keeping a solid foundation (no happy feet!) through the basic service sequence? Thumbs up BTW
I should have watched this video earlier!! It is easy to practice and to get the point serve.
You’re so awesome!!!
Step my step is helping me so much. Thank you.
Best serve tutorial ever. Helps me a lot. Thank you Ian!
He is really good, makes things easy because he delivers great concepts in simplicity and effectiveness

Most players don't use proper serving technique, but instead just "push" the serve in.
Thanks
Awesome instruction Ian; thanks!
Thanks for watching, Jermaine! -Ian
A great great video for beginner serving, really well explained & comfortable steps laid out i follow. Thank you
Excellent explanation! Thanks very much.
You're very welcome, Calum. -Ian
