Power source is only half of the equation, you need to pair it with a good head unit from which you can download your rides. That way you can gauge improvements either from racing or PB's on your training routes.
The beauty of a dual sided powermeter, is if like me when I started using it, I was able to see I pushed 52/54 % with my left leg. The single sided power meter would take 52/54 and double it, giving you a higher power number than your actually pushing. I found stretching to help massively. I'm a lot closer to 50/50 now.
Its my hamstrings that were my biggest problem, I looked up a few basic YOGA streches on TH-cam(simple one like touching my toes), they worked great. But I never stretched before( I know, terrible) and really felt the difference in my legs when I started.
Besides my bike, a power meter was one of the best investments I made into my fitness. I honestly don't know how I could ride without one now! Training without a power meter is like training in the dark. The stages was a good entry level power meter for me, but unfortunately I just had waaayyyy too many issues with it and was definitely not worth the $900 I spent on it. It would constantly cut out for no reason, and the battery cap was not sealing properly so it would always let water in. Stages sent me a new battery cap and it did exactly the same thing so I have to constantly wrap and re-wrap with electrical tap to prevent water getting in. I live in the driest state, on the driest continent in the world and with what small amount of rain we get here I STILL had trouble with mine (and I would constantly dry it and air it out). Just way to much trouble for what you pay imo. I recently upgraded to a Quarq and am so much happier with it. The sealing on the battery cap is WAY better and have had no issues with water getting in (i.e. it's actually water proof). It's a bit more expensive but I guess you get what you pay for (and if I'm spending $900 or more for a power meter I don't want to wrapping my Ultegra crank with electrical tape lol). Sounds like you had a good experience with yours, so maybe I was just unlucky and got a dud. But then again, Anthony works in the biggest bike store in Adelaide and they had over 150 stages returned for warranty, whereas only 2 Quarqs were returned for warranty in a time period of 12 months. I guess there's a reason stages has good warranty.
I do hear a lot of people having issues but mine has been great. Yeah you’re right it’s like training in the dark without one. Glad the Quark is working out for you :)
@@KatieKookaburra hey, what is the power delay on that stages powermeter. How many seconds between pushing on pedals and power numbers appearing on the screen?
I'm really new to cycling, own a Flux as well and am happy with it. Last week I did some research about powermeters for my 105 and decided to save the money. Thanks for probably changing my decision... 😂🤙
Thanks for doing this review! I'm going to get one but either need a new bike or to upgrade the groupset on my current one. Based on what a few people have now said I don't think I'll go for a carbon frame, but a higher end alloy instead
My good bike also has 105. I’ve often thought there’s nothing on this bike that I’d upgrade or change, maybe a power meter would be a good addition. Does it also act as a cadence sensor?
great vid Katie. thanks. just ordered one (ultegra) and gone for shorter cranks too. on the same week as ordering a wattbike lol. thankyou for your great content. hope you are well. tc
The Infocrank battery compartment can withstand a pressure washer water jet. The Stages has an issue reporting correct power with oval chainrings. For the best bike compatibility, pedal based power meters have matured nicely.
This is excellent Katie, thank you. I've been toying with the idea of a power meter for about six months now, but don't want (or need) anything too expensive or complex. I have 105 on my Cannondale Synapse so will most likely go for the Stages 105 too. Oh, and I got the Craft Cadence backpack on your recommendation; best waterproof backpack I've ever used - bar none!
So glad you like the backpack, it’s really good isn’t it. And yeah the 105 power metre has been so good for me. They have good customer service from what I hear too. It’s been a good one :) if you get one let me know how you get on with it. I have really appreciated using one and feel it gives me extra confidence on the bike too :)
I've noticed that reducing Wifi and Bluetooth usage (using ethernet instead of WiFi, using wired headphones instead of Bluetooth, etc.) helps a lot when on Zwift.
When I stand up and pedal on steep hills it registers 0 watts. Just when I need it to work! Low speed, low cadence, high torque shows zero watts! I wouldn’t recommend.
Love your videos. Suggestion: I dislike Shimano SPD's, (hotspots) not intended for long distance cycling. I have changed to Look Keo many years ago and also Crank Bros Candy platofrm Egg Beaters. Just a thought. I do like Stages PM's. Still like heart rate monitors though.

@@KatieKookaburra True. I like the idea of them; however been spending a lot cash on my bike right now and need to hold off for a while or my wife going to shoot me. Plus I'm just starting on week 6 up to 375 miles total. 105 mile in June, and 270 in July so far. So I can tell already that my legs are gaining power fast. At first my battery could get me 30 miles before it and me were done. Now It does 50 miles and I feel fine. I love tech. Spent most of my life wasting away at a keyboard. So really I'm just jealous of your nice toy.
Stages have a major problem in that the strain sensor comes apart from the crank arm over time giving incorrect readings watch for this if you have one. Go for 4iii much better as the sensor is much shorter and does not separate
Vector pedals are superior unless you can't use Look/Shimano-style cleats. The reason is that you get advanced torque analysis, which is key to serious analysis if you can't figure out why your progress is stagnating. I use the advanced reports to troubleshoot saddle position as well and it also helps you figure out when you're getting "burned out" in anaerobic jumps in to higher zones rather than just looking at zone summaries and assuming that you're doing everything "correctly" according to lowest common denominator coaching doctrines. IOW, instead of being fatalistic about your own "genetic" abilities you can get in to advanced problem solving and figure out how to fine tune your structured training and rest.
My only issue with Stages Power is that its one sided, and you don't know how your power output is between legs. I went with the Power Tap P1 Pedals. The only downfall is they have their own special cleat, but you can easily switch them over easily between bikes as long as you have the right tools.
That was pricey (over £400) back in 2018. They seem to be around £300 now. However, you still you'd have to factor in a £200-300 head unit if moving from a steam cycle computer + a speed sensor(?). Does the power crank have rpm output? Otherwise there's a rev sensor to add to that too. Could easily cost over £600! All the same, I may have to go for it as I'm now just using a trainer, in lockdown, in the garage and have got used to having the numbers. You made a good point about the wind. I regularly get dropped when it's windy even though it feels like I'm working very hard.
I’ve been considering the Stages single side power meter. Unfortunately I fractured my right hip last September and that leg is not back to full strength yet. I think the power reading which is based on the right leg may not be accurate. The power from both legs is extrapolated from the right leg output. What do you think? I agree. Power output is the most accurate way of gauging progress!
The accuracy point I find arbitrary - as long as the power on one device is gradually increasing. I have rated mine so much. It’s good to see improvements too
I've got the Gen2 as well. I think they mainly sorted out the water ingress issue over the Gen1? but then it doesn't rain as much here. I've ridden in a few wet days but not really torrential. I've got ultegra 67 and 6800 on both my bikes(one's my commuter the other is my race bike) but went with the 105 just because its cheaper and still is just as accurate. I just change the stages between the 2bikes which takes only 5minutes. Have learnt so much about what type of rider I am(definitely not a sprinter!), and what I was doing wrong before. I've been able to work on my weaknesses and am now better because of it :)
I ride with Rotor dual power and the first thing that I do when I get back from a mucky ride is blast my bike and powermeter with the hose pipe. Why would someone buy something that is so temperamental and easily damaged by water ingress? You shouldn't have to "touch wood" your powermeter is still working, it should just work!
I have used stages for 10 years or so and really like it. I have one on my Tri bike and one on my road bike (different crank arm lengths). However, they both run 10-12% lower in power than my Wahoo Kicker power which is extremely accurate. I calibrate every month stages and Kickr.
I’ve had a stages for 3 years and 2 bikes with quark Dzero for 18 months. No end of problems with quark. Stages has been flawless. I never look at left/right balance. Guess which power meter I’ll be buying next time.
I don’t have no power meter or stuff like that , I have cadence on my cateye Strada ....but I tend to watch my pace , but I guess that is nothing to compare to watts ..so the left arm variant would give a watts breakdown and take into consideration of the right side arm and give you the data

I was looking at the stages but I’m put off by all the negative reviews, like you I only want a cheaper single sided meter just to give me a number I can work with so nothing fancy but heck it’s a minefield!!!
I bought a left hand side stages. Seems kind of lame that the stages app doesn't have 3 second average. The instantaneous reading bounces around way to much to track. So be prepared to buy a bike computer.

You can. It will do the job, but... After the wet ride, with tape on, you absolutely need to un-tape it, take the battery off, leave it open and let it dry or you'l be risking moisture (which will get inside anyway) draining your battery or killing your power meter electronics (corrosion, short circuiting etc.).
Stages only doubles the left leg power if single sided so not truly accurate, also for people with a lot of bikes swapping from one bike to another is a problem if your older bikes are square drive etc. Power pedals are much better for interchangeability. I have 8 bikes from brand new to 20 years old and my favero assimo duo pedals fit them all, taking a couple of minutes to swap from bike to bike and the power is true with them not being one sided. Unfortunatelly, those kinds of power meters does not tell you why you have to push as many wats as you see, so that is why I've designed next generation power meter which will tell you why eg. 250W is needed to ride at any point at time ;) Another issue and why I'm not interested in Stages and other kind of those expensive "powermeters" is overestimating power when oval chainrings are used and I use custom made three oval (elipse) 62T/52T/42T chainrings, so not too much interested in one side power measurement but rather much cheapier "Proudly Made in... my Home" using 3D printing technology and custom electronics inside this thing ;) More about oval rings issue in Stages: "we conclude that there will be a 4-5% increase on the readings from a Stages Power meter when used with a non-round chain rings" source: support.stagescycling.com/en/support/solutions/articles/1000158537-can-i-use-the-stages-power-meter-with-oval-or-osymetric-chain-rings-
My first advice for Stages owners is always: open the battery cap and let it dry after every wet ride. Do it and your Stages will be fine.
Power source is only half of the equation, you need to pair it with a good head unit from which you can download your rides. That way you can gauge improvements either from racing or PB's on your training routes.

Ekhart yoga, 3 yoga poses to increase hamstring flexibility. That's the video I found first, tried it and it worked a treat.
So what if it was reading 4% higher? Still accurate enough for most cyclists. Consistency is what matters most, so you can track your progress.
