  • Playtime and story time have taken on a whole new meaning for one British toddler.
Opal Sandy was born with auditory neuropathy due to a fault in the OTOF gene.
At 18 months old, she is the first British patient and the youngest child ever to be treated with a breakthrough gene therapy - and she can now hear for the first time in her life.
Crystal Goomansingh has more on the breakthrough therapy and the hopes that the promising results in Opal’s case could help others with severe hearing loss.

This report is an emotional appeal to surreptitiously influence public opinion and garner acceptance for widespread genetic therapy.

If gene therapy is proven to be effective in treating widespread medical conditions and giving people a much imprived quality of life why shouldnt people accept it? Your mind must be a scary place to be so conspiracy mindex

The phrase 'no proof of harm' and 'So we see fewer side effects' demonstrates GROSS article bias via neglect of the full facts that there is NO PROOF OF SAFETY because this is phase ONE of a clinical trial. Experimenting on children who cannot give consent but will bear the long term consequences in to adulthood when the parents are gone, when an existing SAFER option of a cochlear implant exists, is ethically highly questionable. What happened to 'first do no harm' and 'informed consent'? Biology is complex and short term benefits may be later ruled out by longer term harm when long term data become available. Novel gene technology should only be conducted on consenting, fully informed adults.
