Thanks for the shout-out! Something to add to this is that sudden sensori-neural hearing loss (SSNHL) is often MISdiagnosed by regular physicians. They often misdiagnose it as a middle ear infection, and write a prescription for anti-biotics to treat it;. Since most SSNHL is virally-induced, anti-biotics have no beneficial effects on it, and the window for the steroid treatment gets missed. One clear difference between virally-induced SSNHL and a middle ear infection is pain. SSNHL does not cause pain, but a middle ear infection is often accompanied by pain. This is due to the fluid behind the eardrum applying pressure to it, and that sensation of pressure can be painful. This is why it's best for patients experiencing a sudden, overnight decrease in their hearing to be seen immediately by either an audiologist or otolaryngologist, preferably within 24 hours of the SSNHL occurring.
This is exactly what I ran into. I went into a quick care and they said they saw no evidence of an infection, but they said it could be a middle ear infection so they wanted to prescribe anti-biotics. This just didn't sit well with me, and after a lot of thought, I checked myself into the ER after every ENT in the area told me they couldn't check me in for at least 2 months. In the end, this saved my hearing as the ER doc called an ENT who suggested immediate steroid treatment.
Yeah. Happened to me first week of Dec. 2023. Couldn't see my primary doctor until a month later, seeing an audiologist 3 weeks after that and my first hearing test isn't until March 21st. They don't seem to care about the 'time' issue or we just don't have enough audiologists to cover all the patients in a timely manner. I live in Los Angeles, not outer Mongolia, so not getting a quicker response is inexcusable. They just don't seem to be as concerned about my condition as they should be, as I am. I agree because I called to get an ENT appointment and they said I needed a referral from my dr or neurologist and I wasn't due for a appointment until weeks after I was discharged. My primary dr said get the referral from the numerologist since he could better treat me. I went back and forth and finally go a referral from my dr and they didnt even ask for it. We must advocate for ourselves but it is so frustrated
Thanks for this critical video. It really is a ticking-clock emergency! I suffer from SSNHL, from my late 30s, over 15 years ago. Unfortunately the audiologists and hearing aid professionals I have worked with seem not so interested in researching solutions; since a hearing aid(s) will rarely "satisfy" the hearing loss need. I want to hear conversations properly coming into my bad side, even if it's just being transferred to my good side. But I do not want it to mess up what I am hearing on my good side just to be able to hear it. My experience with CROS and AMPCROS Phone, and Duo-Acoustic 2xHA solutions over the years is just that. To hear over natural background noise (outside, in a cafe, at a party), the volume needs to be (manually) increased in the HA or Receiver in my good ear; which messes up with the natural hearing coming into my the good ear. So it just messes up all hearing inputs. Of course in a nice, quiet environment, where all sounds and voices are crystal clear, works a charm. But with SSNHL, you can hear "reasonably" OK without any aid in such environments; so what's the justification for paying $1000s for HAs to improve a little what you already hear OK. Would love to hear about success stories of long-time suffers of SSNHL who finally took the Cochlear Implant (CI) option. Thanks.
After getting sudden hearing loss in my left ear in the middle of the day about a month ago, I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with fluid in my middle ear. After a round of prednisone, I guess my hearing improved slightly but it was not major. A month later today, I went to an ENT doctor and he said there's no fluid in my ear and diagnosed me with SSNHL. So devastating since I'm an audio engineer. The worst part of it all is that it is so hard to see any doctors, especially specialized doctors, in a quick timeframe. It often takes weeks and by then the treatment window has passed.
Yeah unfortunately it's not a perfect world and so many things are out of our control. I had this happen to me 2 months ago. I was able to see a specialist ASAP for oral steroids, but then once those finished I had to wait a bit for the next treatment because the doctor was on vacation. I can't blame the doctor for that. So who do I blame, the "system", our government, where I live?
Primary care physicians need to know the urgency of this situation. I'd been experiencing vertigo for months before the sudden hearing loss. This was the warning that was not addressed. When I experienced the loss, it took a day to see primary care. That resulted in a referral which went over a weekend for about a 5-day delay. ENT gave me a steroid injection, but suggested it was unlikely to do any good because of the delay. She put me on "water pills". She concluded I definitely suffer from Meniere's. I will always wonder if steps had been taken to address Meniere's before the sudden loss AND if I had gotten the injection immediately if I might not be living with profound hearing loss now.
I know, I wonder too if I had done something slightly different if my treatment delay of almost a week wouldn't have happened. But no point beating ourselves up over this. Hindsight is 20/20, but we've never gone though this before and we do the best we can in the moment. @@Wrighjj

But The Truth Is Nothing Changed. Me & U We Both Are On The Same Platform
I wish more people knew about this, because I sure didn't a few months ago. If you wake up with hearing loss and have no pain, redness, or swelling, it's not an infection and you must address it immediately. If an ENT can't squeeze you in within a few days, go to the ER. I waited a couple days before going and I am very lucky to have gotten most of my hearing back. Please don't ignore it, because any damage done is permanent.

Two weeks ago, it started in my left ear. Treatment was started the day after. Yet, after 2 weeks, I don't notice revovery, although the first evaluation after 1 week, showed a bit of recovery that I couldn't notice in real life. I'm really worried about the prognosis now. My life is built around music (composing, recording, playing). It is very heavy psychologically impacting my life quality. Please people: don't mess with your ears. You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone. Seek medical help as soon as possible. The first doctor I saw on the day I had the hearing loss, was certain that it was a cold coming up. So she sent me home with the message to not worry. Later that day I went to the ER and was referred to an emergency consultation with an ENT. Don't let your doctor send you home when you have suddenly hearing loss. It is an emergency. General practitioners are less likely to recognise this.
True! The same happened with me. A GP diagnosed it as vertigo, gave vertin tablets and asked me to wait two days before consulting an ENT doctor. It was too late and all the hearing was lost in my left ear. Even after tympanic n steriod therapy, no improvement. Profound loss in left ear!
@@lp8688 Same happen to me, looks exactly what happened to me but in my case they say that it was a congestion, even though I was saying that I wasn't congested at all. In my case I was relaxing on my PC and just happened, never came back, never got better even after the treatment, I have tinnitus since then, it happened on July 2nd 2023 around 3pm EST. I am 43. Happened to me on May 20 this year. My right ear popped and I lost all high frequency and a little bit of mid and low. ENT gave me steroids but they didn't help. Left ear is still perfect (audiologist's words). He wants me to wait 3-6 months before getting a hearing aid because he said he has seen hearing suddenly come back up to a year later. I had an MRI last week to check for a tumor and am waiting for the results. I do have tinnitus which I'm learning to live with and my hearing loss hasn't gotten worse since it first happened. It's just very frustrating now in any place with a lot of people.
@@ryanmakers my MRI came back negative as well but in a small way I was hoping they had found something they could fix. Lol. You will find out that the entire hearing aid industry is in flux because of so many very good low-cost options. The big players no longer have a monopoly.
How long did the MRI take? I have mine coming up in a month to check for a tumor as well. Did you ask to be sedated? I'm not claustrophobic, but don't they lock your head in some kind of apparatus so it doesn't move?
UGH!! This is what is so frustrating about going to a local walk-in or GP...always under such pressure and busy that they jump to conclusions, give you a script for nasal sprays and ear drops and run out of the patient room as fast as they swooped in!! Especially in Southern Ontario...just another day in the Canadian health care system!! 🤬
I experienced sudden hearing loss about 25 years ago when I was in my early 50s-my right ear was affected, but the loss was mostly in my left ear. After twice having my office telephone replaced because I thought it was defective, one of my co-workers asked, “Did you ever think it could be YOU?” I had not, but consulted an ENT who explained my sudden hearing loss. At that time, no treatment was available, so I had to live with it. My hearing has gotten progressively worse, so I now wear hearing aids which help my right ear, but not the left.
I hear this story pretty often! Thinking a phone or headset just isn't working. Even with updated treatment guidelines, many healthcare professionals are still unaware of this condition!
I was lucky that I got in to my primary 5 days after my hearing loss, and she organized the audiology appointment and MRI. The audiologist told me to get my primary to talk to ENT doctor and get me on prednisone immediately, which she did. By the time I got into the ENT, the prednisone had restored my hearing somewhat, and the ENT confirmed it was probably viral, ordered another audiology in a week and follow up with ENT after that. Day by day it is getting better, though I still have some tinnitus and the sound is still tinny and flat. God is good to me, I give him all the glory. Also thanks to my small town medical community for all their concern and skill.
I developed SSHL 2 weeks after having covid. It happened withing 30 minutes while watching videos on the computer. Was treated within 48 hours but there hasn't been any improvement in a year and a half. What I do hear is just buzzing. No word recognition. Problem I have is I have severe tinnitus. I have to have some input into my right ear or the tinnitus is overwhelming. It's a fine balance between how much buzzing to amplify so that it doesn't totally distort what I hear in my left ear and loud enough to cover up some of the ringing. There are good days and bad days, but we keep plugging along hoping that the buzzing calms down enough over time so that we can turn up the volume in my right ear to help in masking more of the tinnitus and hear better.
I got something similar in Jan 2023. tinnitus is driving me crazy. Doctors were initially clueless (so was I), so I missed the effective window. Can we allow audiologists to rx prednisone?
This happened to one of the staff members at my school. She was 25 years old and had a mild hearing loss. Went to bed and woke up completely deaf in both ears.
Happened to me. Been a year and a half. My left ear was the victim. Got to the ENT three days later. Took a course of Prednisone which returned the volume but not the clarity. Subsequently received three intratympanic Prednisone injections which did nothing. I now wear hearing aids which help but are sadly inadequate to restore my previous clarity. If this happens to you then run to an ENT and get treated immediately.
My experience is very similar to yours. Hearing loss in my left ear occurred 2 days after a COVID 19 vaccination (my third booster shot). Misdiagnosis by a GP and then too late to recover the hearing loss with steroids, resulting in hearing aids as the only option. Given no previous health issues or family hearing loss conditions I do believe the COVID vaccine may be a potential cause

My most distressing symptoms are the way I hear my voice - screechy and louder than my good ear - and a feeling of almost constant aural fullness.
@@iluvj50 The HAs do help but the left ear is very dull resulting in a feeling of fullness which you are constantly trying to clear with jaw movements, like when you want to pop your ear pressure after an aircraft decent. Also have low level tinnitus as a result of the lack of stimulation in the left ear. The HAs help by providing an increase in volume but the clarity is not really there. It sucks!
@@Brightsparks1960 Yeah, the lack of clarity is such a drag and the aural fullness is just the icing on the cake. I do find that the aural fullness lessens when my anxiety lessens. My Tinnitus, too. Anything you can safely do to reduce whatever anxiety you may have might help.
I had SSHL in my left ear in early 2019. I think what caused it was a combo of autoimmune (I've had a couple of other conditions over the years) and heavy weight training using valsalva maneuver breathing. I was in the gym doing heavy squats with a big belt and using valsalva. I felt a bit unsteady after the squats and sat down for a bit but recovered. When walking back from the gym my ear just went pop and most of my hearing went in that ear. I had a course of oral steroids 3 days later and then a trans-tympanic injection a couple of weeks after which was a pretty awful experience. I did regain some hearing but then back in the gym again doing heavy deadlifts I blew the left ear drum which is why I think that the pressure in my neck from the lifting was a major contributory factor. I've managed to cope well enough with just a standard NHS issued hearing aid but obviously wish it hadn't happened. There is hope though, there are a number of ongoing projects to help regrow inner ear hairs like The Regain Project which uses GAmma-secretase INhibitors to regenerate the inner ear hairs so keep your fingers crossed.
My hearing was also gone when I was working out. That day I wasn't doing something crazy but I was working slightly harder than usual. It started with a tinnitus in my left ear and over the course of 3 days, I lost my ability to hear. As soon as I realized that I was deaf in my left ear, I went to ENT doctor. He prescribed me steroids and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Its been 3 days only and without any improvement yet. I am gonna start hyperbaric oxygen therapy in two days and I am told that it is very beneficial in such cases. Fingers crossed.
@@einkaya I was informed about the link to heavy lifting from a PT at the gym my wife was attending. It would seem to be a contributor to some SSHL episodes. The earlier you take steroids the better. My episode happened the day before I was due for surgery on my foot to remove a lump so I didn't get steroids for 3 days which wasn't ideal. There's a chance your hearing may improve but if it hasn't after about a month it probably never will, once the inner ear hairs are gone that's it.
After reading several comments, it seems like this condition often happens in the left ear. Strange. This is also my problem. I can't hear much from my left ear but my right one is great. It started 2 years ago when I was 47. Although I was treated and have recovered a bit of hearing since then, the emprovement has been minimal. For now I guess it's better than nothing. I keep hoping for a miracle lol.
What was your treatment? I'm just experiencing this condition (well today second day), and searching online. Did you take the prednisone steroids orally or injected into your eardrum? Says the success is not great, but maybe can help a little. Another 30-60% chance hearing recovers within a year by itself, is claimed. My left ear feels like 50% atm and right ear is perfect.
In the late 90’s I was at work and it felt like a lightning bolt inside my right ear and couldn’t hear.ENT ordered MRI nothing showed up. Two years later hearing came back. Just like that. No one could explain it. In 2012 I was diagnosed being tone deaf. Just a few months ago I was informed that yes indeed my hearing is going and I have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. I need hearing aids. I can’t afford them right now so I just deal with things. I’m only 56 and it’s hard to know that my hearing will only decrease over the years.

It came back 100% after a few weeks. I lost it again after I got another viral flu, but it eventually came back too. ENT said it’s very common for the ear drum to stick
This happened to me in 2019. I already had hearing loss and wore hearing aids but the hearing in my left ear dropped again overnight. One round of prednisone brought it back for about 2 months and then it dropped again. I never recovered even with a subsequent round of prednisone. My Otolarangologist said that consumption of caffeine may have contributed. Have you heard of this?

My SSHL went from "profound" to " mild/moderate" in most hz and "severe" in 6000+hz after high dose oral prednisone, 3 trans tympanic injs, and 30 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. I now have bilateral aids. I highly recommend the Phonek Audio Sphere Infinio aids. I am working with a tinnitus therapist on CBT and sound therapy.
Everyone misses the connection with a molar- root infection!!! I have 30percent hearing loss due to an inner ear issue. I had 2 molar roots removed 24 hours ago & I already notice improved hearing in my affected ear!
I'm one to sit on something if I feel a pain or sick but I had this happen on a Monday, woke up with pressure in my left ear and sound feeling muffled, could hardly identify which side it was. Figured it was nothing and decided to sleep and hope it got better. Worse day 2, decided to schedule an appointment with an ENT. They called me the morning of day 3 and got me in that afternoon. Mid 30s, M, healthy, got over a cold about a week and a half prior that was upper respiratory, and all of a sudden my world is turned upside down. It hurts to hear any low bassy sound, I can't listen to podcasts, music in the car, constant sort of buzz, I'm devastated. Hoping like crazy that the prednisone does what it's supposed to and I can return to some normalcy.
Hey how are you doing now?, I'm also 23 and have been affected on the left ear too. I talked with my mom and hour back and thought my phone's speaker just broke, after an hour later when I was watching some videos i realised there was buzzing coming from my left ear as the sound came. I tried listening from right covering left and vice versa and I'm beyond depressed just thinking about this. Reading all these comments I see very little hope and the battle now is probably to accept this and hope it doesn't get worse.

Get checked out right away. This condition does not cause pain. It makes the ear feel 'full' and stuck as if you need to pop it to decompress. But it doesn't pop. Don't delay.
I'm 19 , it happened to me last year on 18 December 2023 , I thought it's because of the severe cold , I also felt dizziness at first .. I waited for 1-2 months than I went to an ENT , He said that it's because of ear wax and then I took treatment, the ear wax removed but my hearing wasn't..than I visited they ENT again. He wrote a test , and after analysis the test he said that U r too late ..it's time for an hearing aid ..I was like damn ..it will recovered itself , I m not gonna put an hearing aid ..and it's been 6 months ..the condition is the same ..no change ..
Happened to me in the 90’s….went to the Cleveland Clinic in Florida…gotta shrug of the shoulders…ended up with hearing aids in both ears….lost a lot of hearing in one ear thanks to inadequate hearing in Army Basic training…….then poof overnight lost 90 percent hearing in the other ear!

This just happens to me on May 20th. I’ve been taking prednisone, still, no recovery. I did a hearing test, my left ear is on the severe level of hearing loss, and I just did another test, and same results. I have a MRI tomorrow May 31st. This happened to me December 1 in my left ear. It was triggered immediately by a valsalva, what the hell could have happened? I've since had steriods and 2 direct steriod injections into the ear with no improvement. Super stressful as I also have 3 young kids at home.

this happened to me last year when i was 22. I have severe SSNHL that was caused by an extremely rare autoimmune disease (Cogan’s Syndrome) that has also affected my vision. So i woke up with no hearing and my vision dropped from 20/20 to 20/10. my hearing loss is between 75 to 80 percent in both ears.
I had sudden loss in my left ear and injection with steroids was used …it was an extremely painful procedure… I was never told to have a hearing test …. My hearing returned but not to what I was before …
This happened to me, but in my right ear. It turned out that I had a cerebral spinal fluid leak. My ENT tested the fluid in my ear and found it. My ENT that did my surgery, (I had a skull defect of 4mm) fixed it on 1/6/23. My hearing became worse. I got a hearing aid. I had another surgery for another leak on 6/7/24. I'm now completely deaf in my right ear. I'll find out in November if I'm a candidate for a cochlear implant. This all started a month before I turned 40. I'm now a couple of weeks away from 42.
Not sure if it’s from the cold or wind change but I got huge earache with the sudden hearing loss. Pain has gone away but It’s been four days and feel like it’s plugged, can’t hear too good from my left ear. And I also got my ears drained but I’m starting to worry it just happened out of the blue. 😢 all I hear is a buzzin noise 😅
does the pressure and fullness EVER goes away ???????? even after hearing loss I was diagnosed with severe hiring loss 5 days ago? the sounds fullness and pressure are worse than the hearing loss? these sounds are making me go crazy I can't get rid of them :(
I'd like to know this too, the sound hurts, bassy low frequency stuff is unbearable but the constant feeling of fullness is driving me crazy. My Eustachian tubes were looked at by my ENT and said everything is functioning correctly. Hoping it goes away, do you have any update?

Surprised nothing was mentioned about hyperbaric oxygen treatments. I had SSNHL and was treated with oral steriods and injections as well as given the option for HBO. Also curious about links to vaccines. I am NOT an anti-vaxxer, but my SSNHL happened 3 weeks after my first dose of the shingles vaccine. Could have just been coincidence, but I am pretty nervous about getting my second dose. I do not want to go through all of that again.
Last saturday I woke up and my right ear felt weird, like I needed to pop it or water was in it. No matter what I did to open the eustachian tubes my hearing wouldn't go back to normal. It was muffled and felt off...went a week without seeing anyone because I thought it would go away. Occasionally I'd hear a whooshing sound in both ears if i turned my head. Saw a doctor because both ears felt off, but more so in my right and she gave me 5 days worth of prednisone since there wasn't an infection...I'm on the 3rd day of treatment and now both of my ears are muffled and I need to speak louder to hear myself. I have no idea what to do. Funny because this all happened 5 days after I finished ear drop treatment for an outer ear infection...was prescribed neomycin ear drops and used them 3x a day for 10 days as instructed....now I'm dealing with this.
Yeah I had the issue for MONTHS and it turns out the neomycins drops I was given crusted over my ear drums and also made dead skin crust over it. Doctors kept saying it as Eustachian tube dysfunction even though I told them something was covering my ear drums. and it wasn’t until I saw an ear doctor that the issue was actually addressed. It felt so relieving to get em out
Im 40 I had a sudden hearing loss on left ear after a severe night of migraine. I went straight to the doctor got steroids treatment and gas which really helped. I was lucky to go to the doctors quickly and get it treated on time. Today is the 7 th day I have 50% of my hearing back. No more tinnitus. Let’s see if it gets better in a week but I agree with this lady if you have a hearing issue don’t procrastinate go see a specialist ASAP. It will make a huge difference in the outcome. ❤good luck to you all
This has happened to me, but in the right ear. I just had a fever and went to the doctor just to find out that i had an infection and didn't know about it, now I am better from that infection but i hear less in right side. It's not a lot but it's noticeable.
I woke up almost a week ago with loss and extreme high pitched and low groaning noises in my ear. My ent has gotten me in next week. Im hoping I get a promising Dx.
Happened to me overnight in my left ear a year ago. Hearing aid did not work. I am looking at bi-cross hearing aids. This sucks because I get the same thing from different ENTs. Diuretics do not work!

My ears are always cleaned but everytime i yawn or burp, my ears on the inside feels like its trying to poke outwards..which caused a random muffling, so i usually pinch my nose and breath through it to reset, however my left ear suddenly started feeling pain last night and it was stressing me out..my right ear was fine today but not on my left ear....altho i do have Sinuses which must've caused it because of the pressure

If this happened to me, it would put me into a panic. i also panic when i get the low battery sound. Although I know that sudden hearing loss is a serious issue and i am panicking over a minor inconvenience, the unpredictability of single sided deafness is what scares me the most. I’m glad Dr. Frink’s practice is nearby and there would be expert help with this condition.
I lost my hearing overnight in my left ear 32hrs after the 2nd booster. I did complain of pain and pressure after each of the vaccines and then it would subside. When I woke of deaf, I did see the ENT immediately, had the ear injections but no recovery.
Currently happening to me, I am at 30 hours after symptoms, Was on a call at work with a noise cancelling headset on, Not particularly loud volume I also swim a lot and had aviral infection last week so lots of possible causes, After the call I noticed tinnitus in my right ear, I gave it a while to wait it out while starting to google possible causes, slept on it to see it it improved, in the morning the Tinnitus mellowed out but I noticed I could not hear conversations if I covered one ear, Went to a Dr first thing in the morning, followed by an audiologist in the afternoon who confirmed the issue was Sensorineural and not my ear drum Also that I was severely imopaired in my right ear, went to a doctor and got Prednisone into me at roughly 26 hours post onset. Ive noticed throughout the day my hearing has changed a little bit and in the uber home I could make out some of my conversation with the driver with one ear covered which I wouldnt have been able to this morning so fingers crossed i'm still in the treatable zone, Pray for me people !!!
Any updates, I'm currently in day 3 of treatment. I had ringing in my ear for a full day then woke up with no hearing in the left ear. Started treatment the same day that the hearing disappeared
I'm 45 perfectly healthy athletic no meds no drinking no smoking. 5 am woke up for the washroom laid back down, right ear starting to ring and within 5 minutes i lost all hearing and started to have vertigo. My mistake perhaps that day i used a key to scratch my ear not deep, but i probably introduced bacteria or virus that caused it later that night. It's been 6 days very little improvment still can't hear with my ear but i can hear tapping the bone begind my ear. Had steroids oral and injected in the ear second day it hapened. No jabs had, cov 2 times last 6 months ago.
@@txmade4371 I have regained some of my hearing and is very slowly improving. I test my hearing with Bluetooth headphones and an online site and can hear lower frequency but not high. I still can't understand anyone talking with this ear but I can hear sounds. I went through the treatment steroids in the ear but in my opinion it has done more harm then good my jaw started to hurt. It is slowly improving but at a very slow rate, I can still hear a lot of constant noise in my ear like a jet engine, clicking high pitch sounds things like that.
I had hearing loss 2 months ago. It was senzoneural and conductiv hearing loss. I lost 80% hearing at my left ear. Long story short. I have been at hyperbaric oxygene therapies. I had 30 HBOTs. Now, my senzoneural hearing loss is completly healed. So, at the begining I heard 20% at my left ear. Now I hear 65%. And I hear 65%, not 100%, because of conductive hearing loss which can be healed very easy.

It seem the majority of SSHL happens in the left ear. Since it is linked to Cardio events, might there be a connection to the fact that the heart is also on the left side?
It would make sense that it would either be related to a certain side of the brain, orif it was related to being right-handed and being more likely to pinch a nerve on the right side.
About a month ago I woke up as a normal day and I could not hear out of my right ear I thought maybe I had water or ear wax or something in it so I went to the bathroom and I tried to clean it out with a damp towel and nothing seemed to happen so I thought maybe it would just disappear within the day I even tried chewing gum ear drops cracking my jaw you know doing the ear thing with your nose nothing... After 3 days I went to the clinic with my husband they said nope we can't help you go to the ER.... I'm like ok... To go the ER they gave me these random test with vibration tools then a CT... Nothing.. then they sent me to an ENT which thank goodness actually sounded like they knew what they where taking about. After the hearing booth test they clarified that I'm clinically deaf in my ear. They said that the first course of solution was to get 4 shots or steroids in my ear I'm on my third.... They shot goes right in your eardrum.... It may make you a little uncomfortable at first and may get dizzy but after that you can go on your way. I am completely deaf in my right ear and can only feel slight vibrations and if it's too high it hurts, it is called tenatus i have a mri scheduled this 8th of of nov. My b day is the the 6th..... That's way they delayed it. They say 3 things a virus. A tumor or menieres disease which can't be treated. I love to sing and dance I love animals and right now I just can't enjoy it to the fullest. The worst is that when you sleep on your left side and your deaf in your right you cant hear the door open or dogs barking or your phone ringing. Scrary
I got 'deaf' in my right ear this morning and it's quite,no, really weird and I just can't hear but I tested it and if I put my headphones in my right ear with maximum volume I can hear it but....i can't communicate that good cause I can't hear the other persons word nd my mom said that tomorrow in the morning she will get me to a doctor I'm just very young and a bit scared of this. Tho thanks now I'll know where to start from.
i had a sudden hearing loss in both ears two weeks ago. i got a heavy steroid treatment but it didn't help. i did an audio test and i have a moderate sensorineural hearing loss in both ear. i'm waiting for a MRI, but it feels so long... i can't do anything from now on so i'm waiting but it's so tiring i wish something could happen

Yap yap yap yap video.. My sudden (happened over 2 hours one day) went from 40% loss that day to nearly 95% loss over 2 years. ENT next day and ENT next months did nothing to stop this train. The first ENT deserves a malpractice lawsuit. The 2nd tried harder, steroids, etc. In retrospect, I believe had I started turmeric/pepper and shot glass of crushed garlic clove/tbsp EVOO daily IMMEDIATELY, I’d have better chance of hearing today. Side note.. I take HBP RX med, and have used QTips my entire life. After initial 40% loss, I’ve been vigilant to not put finger on or in ear too. You’d be surprised how many times our ear itches. I don’t want to introduce any pathogen into it, but that didn’t help, as it progressed. The progression seemed fo happen a couple of months ago, and nearly as sudden as the first 40%. BTW, then and now, there is some chronic canal inflammation .. only way I know this is the way the qtip has less room in the deaf ear vs the fully hearing ear. Canal is definitely tighter.
So, I will occasionally get a sudden loss in one ear, replaced by a single-tone tinitus. It might last a couple of minutes, and then normal hearing returns. It might happen 2 or 3 times a year. Do I need to have this checked into?
This happened to me last week. I lost my left ear and couldn’t stay balanced nor walk. I did the injection and oral but 3 days after. I hear cracking but very low. 😢
This just happened to me earlier today when I woke up, left ear totally deaf, told my dad who is doc and he says this needs to be treated as soon as possible to be able to recover hearing, little is known yeah, I'm taking corticoide, deflazacort 30 mg 2 a day for 4 days and then 1 and and a half for another 4 days, after that another audiometry like the doc run today, I was shocked when he said sudden sensorial.. I knew what it meant...let's see if the corticoide work and I'll be taking a MRI too.
Do everything you can! I have had this in both my ears and it sucks to be severely deaf. Get the steroid injection. Do HBOT. Do acupuncture. Whatever you need to do, do it!!! Hoping for you.
@@Malagarules After I got the injection into my ear (5 days after the deafness), about 2 days later, some of the hearing started to come back. I had about a 25-35dB improvement a week later, but not quite across all frequencies. I had 2 more weekly injections that added, perhaps another 5 or 10 dB. It was enough that a hearing aid has been able to help that ear.
I was in my primary care within 3 days and reported this. Guy didnt look up. Most doctors dont know squat about this. That includes ENTs. I saw 2 and they did squat.

Few days back one of my staff nurse presented with ssnhl for one month she used alot of medicine but no steroid d no improvement she was responding to loud voice at half meter i her on steroids she improved dramatically within one week d complete to normal hearing

Sadly, this happened to me in my right ear in August, 2022. I saw an ENT doctor within 2 days, had audiology tests, and subsequent steroid treatments including direct inner-ear injections. Ultimately, I got hearing aids, but they simply make the lousy sounds louder. I'm writing this because this is the first time since then that I've heard of other alternatives (the doctor never mentioned CROS, BICROS, or cochlear implants. I'll do more research. Thank you!
I lost most of the hearing in my right ear in mid-January, about 2 years ago, when I was 62 YY. I went to sleep on a Wednesday night and woke up the next morning, mostly deaf in my right ear and with tinnitus. I managed to see an ENT specialist within 72 hours, and he put me on a high dose of cortisone (?) or something similar for 7 days, but no major changes. There was no sign of any infection, and eventually even had an MRI, with no clear results. Occasionally, if I sneeze loudly, my hearing seems to come back for a second or less. If I put an earbud in my right ear and play music or a podcast, I hear, but the pitch is higher than normal. Think listening to "The Chipmunks." I guess time will tell.
I never heard of this until searching for a solution to what I believe is fluid behind my eardrum. Would this be accompanied by my ear feeling outward pressure and fullness?
Just wondering, are you supposed to use a low or medium power receiver for a moderate hearing loos?.. I had the low power receivers before hand, but then my audiologist switched me to a medium power receiver because I got new devices.. and with REM'S done in both the old receivers and new ones, the medium power ones are very strong compared to the other ones I had. is that normal?
Without seeing your audiogram, it's difficult to speculate. But in general, higher powered receivers are capable of producing stronger sound. This *should* be managed by real-ear verification, assuming it was completed correctly and (this is the most important part) at all three input levels (soft, average, and loud level inputs).
@@rachaelcookaud2695 ya, my loss is moderate but only had a standard power receiver and now got medium power in my new ones. I had standard on my old ones and those still met my prescriptive target but the medium ones did as well, bring the volume was lowered a bit in the medium ones in my new devices and it still met my target correctly in both, but the medium ones feel significantly stronger

Sounds very consistent with a sudden loss. Although you are likely out of the treatment window, I still highly suggest you have your hearing evaluated!
I lost my hearing at age 7 cuz I was in 2nd grade and all of us were just doing math until someone who speaks Spanish yelled really loud in the classroom then my ear started to ring I was trying to hear the teacher speak but I heard nothing I asked to go to the bathroom she nodded yes so I went I was thinking of the reason of me losing my hearing

For many people with single-sided deafness that see very minimal clarity with amplified speech (like through hearing aids), electrical stimulation through a cochlear implant is likely the better option. There are a lot of factors that go into making that decision, but a cochlear implant candidacy evaluation is an important step in determining the right treatment option.
@@rachaelcookaud2695Follow up question: How about folks like myself who have less-than-severe hearing loss on one side but the affected ear is distorted? There's nothing on my audiogram to indicate this problem as my bad and good ears register identically. It seems audiograms only measure IF you hear a word or tone but not the clarity with which you do.
How about I have cochlear sensorineural hearing loss. It started with the buzzing in my ears for a few months then it went to my head. My head buzzed like static nonstop 24/7. I also have tinnitus which makes it worse. The noise is so loud in my head. Do doctors recommend hearing aides or tinnitus maskers? I hear fine my hearing loss is in extended high frequency in right in and moderate in left. Please give me more information about this.
hi Doc, Ive been watching your videos on SNHL, i had a sudden loss of bilateral hearing and tinnitus develop overnight, the standard PTA showed normal hearing and I did not understand what was happening to me, until i went to a different ENT who got me to do a Extended PTA, 12k-20k and my hearing is 60-70db loss over 12k, im only 33 years old. He explained why I felt the change in hearing and also the tinnitus. I tried to look for a hearing aid that would help cope with the tinnitus but there are none that amplify sounds in these frequencies. I do fine outdoors but the second I step into a secluded space, even noisy places my tinnitus is loud. What do you suggest I do. Thank you

Something to add to this is that sudden sensori-neural hearing loss (SSNHL) is often MISdiagnosed by regular physicians. They often misdiagnose it as a middle ear infection, and write a prescription for anti-biotics to treat it;. Since most SSNHL is virally-induced, anti-biotics have no beneficial effects on it, and the window for the steroid treatment gets missed.
One clear difference between virally-induced SSNHL and a middle ear infection is pain. SSNHL does not cause pain, but a middle ear infection is often accompanied by pain. This is due to the fluid behind the eardrum applying pressure to it, and that sensation of pressure can be painful. This is why it's best for patients experiencing a sudden, overnight decrease in their hearing to be seen immediately by either an audiologist or otolaryngologist, preferably within 24 hours of the SSNHL occurring.
This is exactly what I ran into. I went into a quick care and they said they saw no evidence of an infection, but they said it could be a middle ear infection so they wanted to prescribe anti-biotics. This just didn't sit well with me, and after a lot of thought, I checked myself into the ER after every ENT in the area told me they couldn't check me in for at least 2 months. In the end, this saved my hearing as the ER doc called an ENT who suggested immediate steroid treatment.
Yeah. Happened to me first week of Dec. 2023. Couldn't see my primary doctor until a month later, seeing an audiologist 3 weeks after that and my first hearing test isn't until March 21st. They don't seem to care about the 'time' issue or we just don't have enough audiologists to cover all the patients in a timely manner. I live in Los Angeles, not outer Mongolia, so not getting a quicker response is inexcusable. They just don't seem to be as concerned about my condition as they should be, as I am. Thank you for your informative video. I learned more here than the three doctors I've already seen.
I agree because I called to get an ENT appointment and they said I needed a referral from my dr or neurologist and I wasn't due for a appointment until weeks after I was discharged. My primary dr said get the referral from the numerologist since he could better treat me. I went back and forth and finally go a referral from my dr and they didnt even ask for it. We must advocate for ourselves but it is so frustrated

I suffer from SSNHL, from my late 30s, over 15 years ago. Unfortunately the audiologists and hearing aid professionals I have worked with seem not so interested in researching solutions; since a hearing aid(s) will rarely "satisfy" the hearing loss need. I want to hear conversations properly coming into my bad side, even if it's just being transferred to my good side. But I do not want it to mess up what I am hearing on my good side just to be able to hear it.
My experience with CROS and AMPCROS Phone, and Duo-Acoustic 2xHA solutions over the years is just that. To hear over natural background noise (outside, in a cafe, at a party), the volume needs to be (manually) increased in the HA or Receiver in my good ear; which messes up with the natural hearing coming into my the good ear. So it just messes up all hearing inputs. Of course in a nice, quiet environment, where all sounds and voices are crystal clear, works a charm. But with SSNHL, you can hear "reasonably" OK without any aid in such environments; so what's the justification for paying $1000s for HAs to improve a little what you already hear OK.
Would love to hear about success stories of long-time suffers of SSNHL who finally took the Cochlear Implant (CI) option. Thanks.
After getting sudden hearing loss in my left ear in the middle of the day about a month ago, I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with fluid in my middle ear. After a round of prednisone, I guess my hearing improved slightly but it was not major. A month later today, I went to an ENT doctor and he said there's no fluid in my ear and diagnosed me with SSNHL. So devastating since I'm an audio engineer. The worst part of it all is that it is so hard to see any doctors, especially specialized doctors, in a quick timeframe. It often takes weeks and by then the treatment window has passed.

Yeah unfortunately it's not a perfect world and so many things are out of our control. I had this happen to me 2 months ago. I was able to see a specialist ASAP for oral steroids, but then once those finished I had to wait a bit for the next treatment because the doctor was on vacation. I can't blame the doctor for that. So who do I blame, the "system", our government, where I live?
Primary care physicians need to know the urgency of this situation. I'd been experiencing vertigo for months before the sudden hearing loss. This was the warning that was not addressed. When I experienced the loss, it took a day to see primary care. That resulted in a referral which went over a weekend for about a 5-day delay. ENT gave me a steroid injection, but suggested it was unlikely to do any good because of the delay. She put me on "water pills". She concluded I definitely suffer from Meniere's. I will always wonder if steps had been taken to address Meniere's before the sudden loss AND if I had gotten the injection immediately if I might not be living with profound hearing loss now.
I know, I wonder too if I had done something slightly different if my treatment delay of almost a week wouldn't have happened. But no point beating ourselves up over this. Hindsight is 20/20, but we've never gone though this before and we do the best we can in the moment. @@Wrighjj

The Morning I Felt My Ear Popped & I Lost My Hearing With Additional Vertigo & Imabalance I Was Taken to The Doctor Within 2 Hours Of The Occurence . I Was Giving Steroids & A Hell Lot Of Treatment. But The Truth Is Nothing Changed. Me & U We Both Are On The Same Platform
I wish more people knew about this, because I sure didn't a few months ago. If you wake up with hearing loss and have no pain, redness, or swelling, it's not an infection and you must address it immediately. If an ENT can't squeeze you in within a few days, go to the ER. I waited a couple days before going and I am very lucky to have gotten most of my hearing back. Please don't ignore it, because any damage done is permanent.

Two weeks ago, it started in my left ear. Treatment was started the day after. Yet, after 2 weeks, I don't notice revovery, although the first evaluation after 1 week, showed a bit of recovery that I couldn't notice in real life. I'm really worried about the prognosis now. My life is built around music (composing, recording, playing). It is very heavy psychologically impacting my life quality.
Please people: don't mess with your ears. You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone. Seek medical help as soon as possible.
The first doctor I saw on the day I had the hearing loss, was certain that it was a cold coming up. So she sent me home with the message to not worry. Later that day I went to the ER and was referred to an emergency consultation with an ENT.
Don't let your doctor send you home when you have suddenly hearing loss. It is an emergency. General practitioners are less likely to recognise this.
True! The same happened with me. A GP diagnosed it as vertigo, gave vertin tablets and asked me to wait two days before consulting an ENT doctor. It was too late and all the hearing was lost in my left ear. Even after tympanic n steriod therapy, no improvement. Profound loss in left ear!

@@lp8688 Same happen to me, looks exactly what happened to me but in my case they say that it was a congestion, even though I was saying that I wasn't congested at all. In my case I was relaxing on my PC and just happened, never came back, never got better even after the treatment, I have tinnitus since then, it happened on July 2nd 2023 around 3pm EST. I am 43. Happened to me on May 20 this year. My right ear popped and I lost all high frequency and a little bit of mid and low. ENT gave me steroids but they didn't help. Left ear is still perfect (audiologist's words). He wants me to wait 3-6 months before getting a hearing aid because he said he has seen hearing suddenly come back up to a year later. I had an MRI last week to check for a tumor and am waiting for the results. I do have tinnitus which I'm learning to live with and my hearing loss hasn't gotten worse since it first happened. It's just very frustrating now in any place with a lot of people.

UGH!! This is what is so frustrating about going to a local walk-in or GP...always under such pressure and busy that they jump to conclusions, give you a script for nasal sprays and ear drops and run out of the patient room as fast as they swooped in!! Especially in Southern Ontario...just another day in the Canadian health care system!! 🤬

I experienced sudden hearing loss about 25 years ago when I was in my early 50s-my right ear was affected, but the loss was mostly in my left ear. After twice having my office telephone replaced because I thought it was defective, one of my co-workers asked, “Did you ever think it could be YOU?” I had not, but consulted an ENT who explained my sudden hearing loss. At that time, no treatment was available, so I had to live with it. My hearing has gotten progressively worse, so I now wear hearing aids which help my right ear, but not the left.
I hear this story pretty often! Thinking a phone or headset just isn't working. Even with updated treatment guidelines, many healthcare professionals are still unaware of this condition!

I was lucky that I got in to my primary 5 days after my hearing loss, and she organized the audiology appointment and MRI. The audiologist told me to get my primary to talk to ENT doctor and get me on prednisone immediately, which she did. By the time I got into the ENT, the prednisone had restored my hearing somewhat, and the ENT confirmed it was probably viral, ordered another audiology in a week and follow up with ENT after that. Day by day it is getting better, though I still have some tinnitus and the sound is still tinny and flat. God is good to me, I give him all the glory. Also thanks to my small town medical community for all their concern and skill.
I developed SSHL 2 weeks after having covid. It happened withing 30 minutes while watching videos on the computer. Was treated within 48 hours but there hasn't been any improvement in a year and a half. What I do hear is just buzzing. No word recognition. Problem I have is I have severe tinnitus. I have to have some input into my right ear or the tinnitus is overwhelming. It's a fine balance between how much buzzing to amplify so that it doesn't totally distort what I hear in my left ear and loud enough to cover up some of the ringing. There are good days and bad days, but we keep plugging along hoping that the buzzing calms down enough over time so that we can turn up the volume in my right ear to help in masking more of the tinnitus and hear better.
I got something similar in Jan 2023. tinnitus is driving me crazy. Doctors were initially clueless (so was I), so I missed the effective window. Can we allow audiologists to rx prednisone?

i had my second sudden loss overnight in November. I'll get my cochlear implant this week.
Happened to me. Been a year and a half. My left ear was the victim. Got to the ENT three days later. Took a course of Prednisone which returned the volume but not the clarity. Subsequently received three intratympanic Prednisone injections which did nothing. I now wear hearing aids which help but are sadly inadequate to restore my previous clarity. If this happens to you then run to an ENT and get treated immediately.
My experience is very similar to yours. Hearing loss in my left ear occurred 2 days after a COVID 19 vaccination (my third booster shot). Misdiagnosis by a GP and then too late to recover the hearing loss with steroids, resulting in hearing aids as the only option.
Given no previous health issues or family hearing loss conditions I do believe the COVID vaccine may be a potential cause

My most distressing symptoms are the way I hear my voice - screechy and louder than my good ear - and a feeling of almost constant aural fullness.
@@iluvj50 The HAs do help but the left ear is very dull resulting in a feeling of fullness which you are constantly trying to clear with jaw movements, like when you want to pop your ear pressure after an aircraft decent. Also have low level tinnitus as a result of the lack of stimulation in the left ear. The HAs help by providing an increase in volume but the clarity is not really there. It sucks!
@@Brightsparks1960 Yeah, the lack of clarity is such a drag and the aural fullness is just the icing on the cake. I do find that the aural fullness lessens when my anxiety lessens. My Tinnitus, too. Anything you can safely do to reduce whatever anxiety you may have might help.

I had SSHL in my left ear in early 2019. I think what caused it was a combo of autoimmune (I've had a couple of other conditions over the years) and heavy weight training using valsalva maneuver breathing. I was in the gym doing heavy squats with a big belt and using valsalva. I felt a bit unsteady after the squats and sat down for a bit but recovered. When walking back from the gym my ear just went pop and most of my hearing went in that ear. I had a course of oral steroids 3 days later and then a trans-tympanic injection a couple of weeks after which was a pretty awful experience. I did regain some hearing but then back in the gym again doing heavy deadlifts I blew the left ear drum which is why I think that the pressure in my neck from the lifting was a major contributory factor. I've managed to cope well enough with just a standard NHS issued hearing aid but obviously wish it hadn't happened. There is hope though, there are a number of ongoing projects to help regrow inner ear hairs like The Regain Project which uses GAmma-secretase INhibitors to regenerate the inner ear hairs so keep your fingers crossed.
My hearing was also gone when I was working out. That day I wasn't doing something crazy but I was working slightly harder than usual. It started with a tinnitus in my left ear and over the course of 3 days, I lost my ability to hear. As soon as I realized that I was deaf in my left ear, I went to ENT doctor. He prescribed me steroids and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Its been 3 days only and without any improvement yet. I am gonna start hyperbaric oxygen therapy in two days and I am told that it is very beneficial in such cases. Fingers crossed.
@@einkaya I was informed about the link to heavy lifting from a PT at the gym my wife was attending. It would seem to be a contributor to some SSHL episodes. The earlier you take steroids the better. My episode happened the day before I was due for surgery on my foot to remove a lump so I didn't get steroids for 3 days which wasn't ideal. There's a chance your hearing may improve but if it hasn't after about a month it probably never will, once the inner ear hairs are gone that's it.

After reading several comments, it seems like this condition often happens in the left ear. Strange. This is also my problem. I can't hear much from my left ear but my right one is great. It started 2 years ago when I was 47. Although I was treated and have recovered a bit of hearing since then, the emprovement has been minimal. For now I guess it's better than nothing. I keep hoping for a miracle lol.
It was the right ear for me, though I am left dominant in all my extremities so I have no idea if there is any correlation with that.

What was your treatment? I'm just experiencing this condition (well today second day), and searching online. Did you take the prednisone steroids orally or injected into your eardrum? Says the success is not great, but maybe can help a little. Another 30-60% chance hearing recovers within a year by itself, is claimed. My left ear feels like 50% atm and right ear is perfect.

In the late 90’s I was at work and it felt like a lightning bolt inside my right ear and couldn’t hear.ENT ordered MRI nothing showed up. Two years later hearing came back. Just like that. No one could explain it.
In 2012 I was diagnosed being tone deaf. Just a few months ago I was informed that yes indeed my hearing is going and I have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. I need hearing aids. I can’t afford them right now so I just deal with things. I’m only 56 and it’s hard to know that my hearing will only decrease over the years.

It came back 100% after a few weeks. I lost it again after I got another viral flu, but it eventually came back too. ENT said it’s very common for the ear drum to stick

This happened to me in 2019. I already had hearing loss and wore hearing aids but the hearing in my left ear dropped again overnight. One round of prednisone brought it back for about 2 months and then it dropped again. I never recovered even with a subsequent round of prednisone. My Otolarangologist said that consumption of caffeine may have contributed. Have you heard of this?

My SSHL went from "profound" to " mild/moderate" in most hz and "severe" in 6000+hz after high dose oral prednisone, 3 trans tympanic injs, and 30 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. I now have bilateral aids. I highly recommend the Phonek Audio Sphere Infinio aids. I am working with a tinnitus therapist on CBT and sound therapy.

I'm one to sit on something if I feel a pain or sick but I had this happen on a Monday, woke up with pressure in my left ear and sound feeling muffled, could hardly identify which side it was. Figured it was nothing and decided to sleep and hope it got better. Worse day 2, decided to schedule an appointment with an ENT. They called me the morning of day 3 and got me in that afternoon. Mid 30s, M, healthy, got over a cold about a week and a half prior that was upper respiratory, and all of a sudden my world is turned upside down. It hurts to hear any low bassy sound, I can't listen to podcasts, music in the car, constant sort of buzz, I'm devastated. Hoping like crazy that the prednisone does what it's supposed to and I can return to some normalcy.

Hey how are you doing now?, I'm also 23 and have been affected on the left ear too. I talked with my mom and hour back and thought my phone's speaker just broke, after an hour later when I was watching some videos i realised there was buzzing coming from my left ear as the sound came. I tried listening from right covering left and vice versa and I'm beyond depressed just thinking about this.
Reading all these comments I see very little hope and the battle now is probably to accept this and hope it doesn't get worse.

Get checked out right away. This condition does not cause pain. It makes the ear feel 'full' and stuck as if you need to pop it to decompress. But it doesn't pop. Don't delay.
I'm 19 , it happened to me last year on 18 December 2023 , I thought it's because of the severe cold , I also felt dizziness at first .. I waited for 1-2 months than I went to an ENT , He said that it's because of ear wax and then I took treatment, the ear wax removed but my hearing wasn't..than I visited they ENT again. He wrote a test , and after analysis the test he said that U r too late ..it's time for an hearing aid ..I was like damn ..it will recovered itself , I m not gonna put an hearing aid ..and it's been 6 months ..the condition is the same ..no change ..
Happened to me in the 90’s….went to the Cleveland Clinic in Florida…gotta shrug of the shoulders…ended up with hearing aids in both ears….lost a lot of hearing in one ear thanks to inadequate hearing in Army Basic training…….then poof overnight lost 90 percent hearing in the other ear!

This just happens to me on May 20th. I’ve been taking prednisone, still, no recovery. I did a hearing test, my left ear is on the severe level of hearing loss, and I just did another test, and same results. I have a MRI tomorrow May 31st. This happened to me December 1 in my left ear. It was triggered immediately by a valsalva, what the hell could have happened? I've since had steriods and 2 direct steriod injections into the ear with no improvement. Super stressful as I also have 3 young kids at home.

this happened to me last year when i was 22. I have severe SSNHL that was caused by an extremely rare autoimmune disease (Cogan’s Syndrome) that has also affected my vision. So i woke up with no hearing and my vision dropped from 20/20 to 20/10. my hearing loss is between 75 to 80 percent in both ears.

I had sudden loss in my left ear and injection with steroids was used …it was an extremely painful procedure… I was never told to have a hearing test …. My hearing returned but not to what I was before …
This happened to me, but in my right ear. It turned out that I had a cerebral spinal fluid leak. My ENT tested the fluid in my ear and found it. My ENT that did my surgery, (I had a skull defect of 4mm) fixed it on 1/6/23. My hearing became worse. I got a hearing aid. I had another surgery for another leak on 6/7/24. I'm now completely deaf in my right ear. I'll find out in November if I'm a candidate for a cochlear implant. This all started a month before I turned 40. I'm now a couple of weeks away from 42.
Not sure if it’s from the cold or wind change but I got huge earache with the sudden hearing loss. Pain has gone away but It’s been four days and feel like it’s plugged, can’t hear too good from my left ear. And I also got my ears drained but I’m starting to worry it just happened out of the blue. 😢 all I hear is a buzzin noise 😅

I'd like to know this too, the sound hurts, bassy low frequency stuff is unbearable but the constant feeling of fullness is driving me crazy. My Eustachian tubes were looked at by my ENT and said everything is functioning correctly. Hoping it goes away, do you have any update?

Surprised nothing was mentioned about hyperbaric oxygen treatments. I had SSNHL and was treated with oral steriods and injections as well as given the option for HBO. Also curious about links to vaccines. I am NOT an anti-vaxxer, but my SSNHL happened 3 weeks after my first dose of the shingles vaccine. Could have just been coincidence, but I am pretty nervous about getting my second dose. I do not want to go through all of that again.

I am fortunate a good chunk of my hearing has returned. It's not as good as it was before it happened, but I am very thankful for what has come back.

Last saturday I woke up and my right ear felt weird, like I needed to pop it or water was in it. No matter what I did to open the eustachian tubes my hearing wouldn't go back to normal. It was muffled and felt off...went a week without seeing anyone because I thought it would go away. Occasionally I'd hear a whooshing sound in both ears if i turned my head. Saw a doctor because both ears felt off, but more so in my right and she gave me 5 days worth of prednisone since there wasn't an infection...I'm on the 3rd day of treatment and now both of my ears are muffled and I need to speak louder to hear myself. I have no idea what to do. Funny because this all happened 5 days after I finished ear drop treatment for an outer ear infection...was prescribed neomycin ear drops and used them 3x a day for 10 days as instructed....now I'm dealing with this.

Yeah I had the issue for MONTHS and it turns out the neomycins drops I was given crusted over my ear drums and also made dead skin crust over it. Doctors kept saying it as Eustachian tube dysfunction even though I told them something was covering my ear drums. and it wasn’t until I saw an ear doctor that the issue was actually addressed. It felt so relieving to get em out
I was 56 at the time & now use transmitter aid in left to hearing aid in right. Helps some...😢
Im 40 I had a sudden hearing loss on left ear after a severe night of migraine. I went straight to the doctor got steroids treatment and gas which really helped. I was lucky to go to the doctors quickly and get it treated on time. Today is the 7 th day I have 50% of my hearing back. No more tinnitus. Let’s see if it gets better in a week but I agree with this lady if you have a hearing issue don’t procrastinate go see a specialist ASAP. It will make a huge difference in the outcome. ❤good luck to you all

This has happened to me, but in the right ear. I just had a fever and went to the doctor just to find out that i had an infection and didn't know about it, now I am better from that infection but i hear less in right side. It's not a lot but it's noticeable.
I woke up almost a week ago with loss and extreme high pitched and low groaning noises in my ear. My ent has gotten me in next week. Im hoping I get a promising Dx.
Happened to me overnight in my left ear a year ago. Hearing aid did not work. I am looking at bi-cross hearing aids. This sucks because I get the same thing from different ENTs. Diuretics do not work!

My ears are always cleaned but everytime i yawn or burp, my ears on the inside feels like its trying to poke outwards..which caused a random muffling, so i usually pinch my nose and breath through it to reset, however my left ear suddenly started feeling pain last night and it was stressing me out..my right ear was fine today but not on my left ear....altho i do have Sinuses which must've caused it because of the pressure

If this happened to me, it would put me into a panic. i also panic when i get the low battery sound. Although I know that sudden hearing loss is a serious issue and i am panicking over a minor inconvenience, the unpredictability of single sided deafness is what scares me the most. I’m glad Dr. Frink’s practice is nearby and there would be expert help with this condition.
Dr. Frink is, in fact, the single-sided deafness expert! But just remember, this condition is very rare.
I lost my hearing overnight in my left ear 32hrs after the 2nd booster. I did complain of pain and pressure after each of the vaccines and then it would subside. When I woke of deaf, I did see the ENT immediately, had the ear injections but no recovery.
Currently happening to me, I am at 30 hours after symptoms, Was on a call at work with a noise cancelling headset on, Not particularly loud volume I also swim a lot and had aviral infection last week so lots of possible causes, After the call I noticed tinnitus in my right ear, I gave it a while to wait it out while starting to google possible causes, slept on it to see it it improved, in the morning the Tinnitus mellowed out but I noticed I could not hear conversations if I covered one ear, Went to a Dr first thing in the morning, followed by an audiologist in the afternoon who confirmed the issue was Sensorineural and not my ear drum Also that I was severely imopaired in my right ear, went to a doctor and got Prednisone into me at roughly 26 hours post onset. Ive noticed throughout the day my hearing has changed a little bit and in the uber home I could make out some of my conversation with the driver with one ear covered which I wouldnt have been able to this morning so fingers crossed i'm still in the treatable zone, Pray for me people !!!
Any updates, I'm currently in day 3 of treatment. I had ringing in my ear for a full day then woke up with no hearing in the left ear. Started treatment the same day that the hearing disappeared
I'm 45 perfectly healthy athletic no meds no drinking no smoking. 5 am woke up for the washroom laid back down, right ear starting to ring and within 5 minutes i lost all hearing and started to have vertigo. My mistake perhaps that day i used a key to scratch my ear not deep, but i probably introduced bacteria or virus that caused it later that night. It's been 6 days very little improvment still can't hear with my ear but i can hear tapping the bone begind my ear. Had steroids oral and injected in the ear second day it hapened. No jabs had, cov 2 times last 6 months ago.

@@txmade4371 I have regained some of my hearing and is very slowly improving. I test my hearing with Bluetooth headphones and an online site and can hear lower frequency but not high. I still can't understand anyone talking with this ear but I can hear sounds.
I went through the treatment steroids in the ear but in my opinion it has done more harm then good my jaw started to hurt. It is slowly improving but at a very slow rate, I can still hear a lot of constant noise in my ear like a jet engine, clicking high pitch sounds things like that.
I had hearing loss 2 months ago. It was senzoneural and conductiv hearing loss. I lost 80% hearing at my left ear. Long story short. I have been at hyperbaric oxygene therapies. I had 30 HBOTs. Now, my senzoneural hearing loss is completly healed. So, at the begining I heard 20% at my left ear. Now I hear 65%. And I hear 65%, not 100%, because of conductive hearing loss which can be healed very easy.

It seem the majority of SSHL happens in the left ear. Since it is linked to Cardio events, might there be a connection to the fact that the heart is also on the left side?
I have yet to see one side more affected than the other. In clinic, my sudden loss patients are nearly 50/50 on affected side.

It would make sense that it would either be related to a certain side of the brain, orif it was related to being right-handed and being more likely to pinch a nerve on the right side.

About a month ago I woke up as a normal day and I could not hear out of my right ear I thought maybe I had water or ear wax or something in it so I went to the bathroom and I tried to clean it out with a damp towel and nothing seemed to happen so I thought maybe it would just disappear within the day I even tried chewing gum ear drops cracking my jaw you know doing the ear thing with your nose nothing... After 3 days I went to the clinic with my husband they said nope we can't help you go to the ER.... I'm like ok... To go the ER they gave me these random test with vibration tools then a CT... Nothing.. then they sent me to an ENT which thank goodness actually sounded like they knew what they where taking about. After the hearing booth test they clarified that I'm clinically deaf in my ear. They said that the first course of solution was to get 4 shots or steroids in my ear I'm on my third.... They shot goes right in your eardrum.... It may make you a little uncomfortable at first and may get dizzy but after that you can go on your way. I am completely deaf in my right ear and can only feel slight vibrations and if it's too high it hurts, it is called tenatus i have a mri scheduled this 8th of of nov. My b day is the the 6th..... That's way they delayed it. They say 3 things a virus. A tumor or menieres disease which can't be treated. I love to sing and dance I love animals and right now I just can't enjoy it to the fullest. The worst is that when you sleep on your left side and your deaf in your right you cant hear the door open or dogs barking or your phone ringing. Scrary
I got 'deaf' in my right ear this morning and it's quite,no, really weird and I just can't hear but I tested it and if I put my headphones in my right ear with maximum volume I can hear it but....i can't communicate that good cause I can't hear the other persons word nd my mom said that tomorrow in the morning she will get me to a doctor I'm just very young and a bit scared of this. Tho thanks now I'll know where to start from.

My sudden (happened over 2 hours one day) went from 40% loss that day to nearly 95% loss over 2 years. ENT next day and ENT next months did nothing to stop this train. The first ENT deserves a malpractice lawsuit. The 2nd tried harder, steroids, etc. In retrospect, I believe had I started turmeric/pepper and shot glass of crushed garlic clove/tbsp EVOO daily IMMEDIATELY, I’d have better chance of hearing today.
Side note.. I take HBP RX med, and have used QTips my entire life. After initial 40% loss, I’ve been vigilant to not put finger on or in ear too. You’d be surprised how many times our ear itches. I don’t want to introduce any pathogen into it, but that didn’t help, as it progressed. The progression seemed fo happen a couple of months ago, and nearly as sudden as the first 40%. BTW, then and now, there is some chronic canal inflammation .. only way I know this is the way the qtip has less room in the deaf ear vs the fully hearing ear. Canal is definitely tighter.
So, I will occasionally get a sudden loss in one ear, replaced by a single-tone tinitus. It might last a couple of minutes, and then normal hearing returns. It might happen 2 or 3 times a year. Do I need to have this checked into?
This sounds much more like transient ear noise: a quick dampening of sound, a high-pitch tone, and after a few minutes, it returns to normal.
This happened to me last week. I lost my left ear and couldn’t stay balanced nor walk. I did the injection and oral but 3 days after. I hear cracking but very low. 😢
This just happened to me earlier today when I woke up, left ear totally deaf, told my dad who is doc and he says this needs to be treated as soon as possible to be able to recover hearing, little is known yeah, I'm taking corticoide, deflazacort 30 mg 2 a day for 4 days and then 1 and and a half for another 4 days, after that another audiometry like the doc run today, I was shocked when he said sudden sensorial.. I knew what it meant...let's see if the corticoide work and I'll be taking a MRI too.
Do everything you can! I have had this in both my ears and it sucks to be severely deaf. Get the steroid injection. Do HBOT. Do acupuncture. Whatever you need to do, do it!!! Hoping for you.

@@Malagarules After I got the injection into my ear (5 days after the deafness), about 2 days later, some of the hearing started to come back. I had about a 25-35dB improvement a week later, but not quite across all frequencies. I had 2 more weekly injections that added, perhaps another 5 or 10 dB. It was enough that a hearing aid has been able to help that ear.

I was in my primary care within 3 days and reported this. Guy didnt look up. Most doctors dont know squat about this. That includes ENTs. I saw 2 and they did squat.

Sadly, this happened to me in my right ear in August, 2022. I saw an ENT doctor within 2 days, had audiology tests, and subsequent steroid treatments including direct inner-ear injections. Ultimately, I got hearing aids, but they simply make the lousy sounds louder. I'm writing this because this is the first time since then that I've heard of other alternatives (the doctor never mentioned CROS, BICROS, or cochlear implants. I'll do more research. Thank you!
how has it gone?
I lost most of the hearing in my right ear in mid-January, about 2 years ago, when I was 62 YY. I went to sleep on a Wednesday night and woke up the next morning, mostly deaf in my right ear and with tinnitus. I managed to see an ENT specialist within 72 hours, and he put me on a high dose of cortisone (?) or something similar for 7 days, but no major changes. There was no sign of any infection, and eventually even had an MRI, with no clear results. Occasionally, if I sneeze loudly, my hearing seems to come back for a second or less. If I put an earbud in my right ear and play music or a podcast, I hear, but the pitch is higher than normal. Think listening to "The Chipmunks." I guess time will tell.
I never heard of this until searching for a solution to what I believe is fluid behind my eardrum. Would this be accompanied by my ear feeling outward pressure and fullness?

Just wondering, are you supposed to use a low or medium power receiver for a moderate hearing loos?.. I had the low power receivers before hand, but then my audiologist switched me to a medium power receiver because I got new devices.. and with REM'S done in both the old receivers and new ones, the medium power ones are very strong compared to the other ones I had. is that normal?
Without seeing your audiogram, it's difficult to speculate. But in general, higher powered receivers are capable of producing stronger sound. This *should* be managed by real-ear verification, assuming it was completed correctly and (this is the most important part) at all three input levels (soft, average, and loud level inputs).
@@rachaelcookaud2695 ya, my loss is moderate but only had a standard power receiver and now got medium power in my new ones. I had standard on my old ones and those still met my prescriptive target but the medium ones did as well, bring the volume was lowered a bit in the medium ones in my new devices and it still met my target correctly in both, but the medium ones feel significantly stronger

After Covid-19 delta, I lost hearing in my right ear. It took about 3 days and now all I hear from my right ear is noise.
Sounds very consistent with a sudden loss. Although you are likely out of the treatment window, I still highly suggest you have your hearing evaluated!
I just woke up and my left ear is muffled. I was sick a week ago so maybe that’s why?

I lost my hearing at age 7 cuz I was in 2nd grade and all of us were just doing math until someone who speaks Spanish yelled really loud in the classroom then my ear started to ring I was trying to hear the teacher speak but I heard nothing I asked to go to the bathroom she nodded yes so I went I was thinking of the reason of me losing my hearing

For many people with single-sided deafness that see very minimal clarity with amplified speech (like through hearing aids), electrical stimulation through a cochlear implant is likely the better option. There are a lot of factors that go into making that decision, but a cochlear implant candidacy evaluation is an important step in determining the right treatment option.
@@rachaelcookaud2695Follow up question: How about folks like myself who have less-than-severe hearing loss on one side but the affected ear is distorted? There's nothing on my audiogram to indicate this problem as my bad and good ears register identically. It seems audiograms only measure IF you hear a word or tone but not the clarity with which you do.
How about I have cochlear sensorineural hearing loss. It started with the buzzing in my ears for a few months then it went to my head. My head buzzed like static nonstop 24/7. I also have tinnitus which makes it worse. The noise is so loud in my head. Do doctors recommend hearing aides or tinnitus maskers? I hear fine my hearing loss is in extended high frequency in right in and moderate in left. Please give me more information about this.
hi Doc, Ive been watching your videos on SNHL, i had a sudden loss of bilateral hearing and tinnitus develop overnight, the standard PTA showed normal hearing and I did not understand what was happening to me, until i went to a different ENT who got me to do a Extended PTA, 12k-20k and my hearing is 60-70db loss over 12k, im only 33 years old. He explained why I felt the change in hearing and also the tinnitus. I tried to look for a hearing aid that would help cope with the tinnitus but there are none that amplify sounds in these frequencies. I do fine outdoors but the second I step into a secluded space, even noisy places my tinnitus is loud. What do you suggest I do. Thank you
