    I can't get past the name. Can't sleep? talk to your doctor about prescription Amberol. (recite side effects for 2 minutes).

      I suspect it's named after Thomas Edison's Amberol phonograph cylinder, not a topical preparation for the treatment of haemorrhoids.

      The name is truly garbage and made me AVOID the application for months. I installed it now because it is good despite the awful name.

    I like the aesthetic, and I'm slightly sympathetic to the goal of making things as simple as possible. I just think they've gone a bit too far here. I couldn't use a music player without a playlist function.

    Its a truly beautiful little music player as it is (0k maybe a name change) I wouldnt change a thing. Not too busy, not too shiny, and I can manage my music myself.

    I have found that Lollypop is a great player which is very simple, but has a few of the features that I want. Basically, I want a library and the ability to create and save playlists. Lollypop allows me to do that. This Amberol looks interesting, but those two features - a Library and Playlists - are not bloat, are not too convoluted and useless. To me, any player should have that simple basic functionality. Another good player is Sayonara. I agree that Clementine is a little too much.

    Thanks for this. I'm a recent LINUX convert. Planning to give it a go for playback in our youth theatre camp program coming up. The Rhythmbox GUI is just a bit tedious. Hoping the larger and simpler controls will be a better fit for my students.
    EDIT: Disappointing - The file names to not appear in the playlist. Only 01, 02, etc "unknown artist/album"

    I recommend mpv player instead. It is even more simple than Amberol and can play specific titles or create playlist on the fly by running mpv with multiple files from filesystem. In example I select the files in my filemanager and right mouse click open with mpv will play all of them in a dynamically created playlist.
    For anything else music related I use cantata.

    • @WMan37
      @WMan37 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mpv is fantastic. You can even play youtube music by attaching the --no-video argument to a link, and even quickly make webms out of videos by using the third party mpv-webm lua script. I have aliases in my .bashrc that specifically just let me type short commands to start listening to youtube music playlists.

    My go-to as a simple music player is cmus. Almost no dependencies, available on all distros as a native package, terminal based, no need to fiddle with mpd, flatpaks and desktop environments. Nothing fancy, very basic, just works, lean on resources, etc.

  • @anon_y_mousse
    @anon_y_mousse 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't get why anyone needs more than one playlist. I just put everything in mine and if I stop wanting to hear a song for a while I remove it from the list. Although, if you've got a huge collection of music, it'd be a good idea to keep a playlist using relative paths, if necessary, to make importing it faster. I keep everything in ~/Music so paths can be absolute since it'll always be mounted the same.

      @@Iainmaclennan70 I use Audacious as my regular player. I find that I don't like every song by every artist, except Radiohead, Linkin Park and the Beatles. And I also don't generally like the ordering to just be alphabetical or temporal, so I curate.
