"The British fund for aging rockers. And they give grants. I applied for it... It's the money left over from austerity." I'd been chuckling through the joke laden interview but when he said the gag about austerity I lost it. I don't know how Jonesy kept a straight face. Harry Shearer is an intelligently funny man.
“...but he just pushes it too far...he’s got these beautiful miniature goats...but they’re too small to milk.” I nearly choked on my breakfast laughing at that one! 🤣
Brilliance. Sheer brilliance. I can’t get enough of Steve Jones or Spinal Tap! Brilliance!!!! “Near Death Metal”....... brilliant. Salmon farm. Even better! Lmao!
- "We're very big in Bulgaria, and what's-his-name? The other garia." - "Hungaria? " - "Yeah, whatever." - "I can't think of anyone who's benefitted more from the death of Communism than us."
Near-death metal! I'm not from the UK or LA, so I have no idea who that other gentleman is (some 70s pop singer I expect), but Derek Smalls is my spiritual centre. (I'm American, but I spell it that way to honour Derek.) When his band Tapped into America, he Tapped into my soul. I live my life collecting butter, but Derek Smalls has always been my bread. When all I have is bread, he provides the cucumber.
harry shearer was on the pilot episode of leave it to beaver, check it out! dudes been in the entertainment game since the fifties, it looks like he's wearing David st. hubbins wig?
So funny to watch all the comments on these shows. This is really just old school radio turned into a podcast. Back in the day radio had this vibe. Relaxed and improvised with some notes if the host needed them. And today it's almost radical because people has been fed with short attention spanned entertainment for decades. This is like taking a time machine back to the 70s.
Hahaha, I don't think I've ever seen any of the Spinal Tap guys interact with real rockstars before. It's even funnier. Jones just seems genuinely interested and relating to all the ridiculous jokes.
Oh cripes, for a few minutes I was trying to place 'Derek Smalls' as a real rock star who would know Steve Jones. And I wondered why he sounds a lot like Christopher Lee.
@@alanjudd7537 It actually happened to me,I grew up in Boston, moved to Florida and after a 14 yrs. I went back and everyone said I had a Southern accent
I just saw Edgar Winter on Jonesy's. He's been out of Texas since he was 16, and he STILL has his Texas accent! Ditto with Jonesy himself, whose been in Beverly Hills almost as long. So not everyone. But I do notice its easier for Australians, for some reason, to sound like Americans. Think Rick Springfield and Mel Gibson.
@@markyncole Of course I know Spinal Tap is a joke!. I was just trying to illustrate the point the other guys were making, and it was a valid point that needed to be made.
I have to correct Derek, Armadillos are mammals related to anteaters. They are warm blooded and do not lay eggs and therefore not reptiles. But he's an authority on everything else
Love how Jonesy keeps using the London slang word gaff when talking to Americans and none of them know what he's talking about except Harry S in this bit ;he seemed to cotton on to what it means ( house/building). It usually baffies other non English/ British guests
@mjh5437 Don't presume everyone else is a racist fxxxwit just because you are mate . London was built by Romans, rebuilt by French, Scots, Jews , Irish, and West Indians, and Asians. Its always been that way since its inception. Stop reading the Daily Mail and the Sun ,buy a history book ffs .
I come back to this interview every few months. Comedy gold.
"The British fund for aging rockers. And they give grants. I applied for it... It's the money left over from austerity."

One of my all time favorite jokes that one, just brilliant!
Love Jonesy and love Derek.
But neither of them has loved and lost like Frank has.
I love it, the way they play off each other. It's brilliant.
“...but he just pushes it too far...he’s got these beautiful miniature goats...but they’re too small to milk.”
I nearly choked on my breakfast laughing at that one! 🤣
Nigel Tufnel is a genius. He invented a capo for amps, as well as a folding wine glass.
The amp capo changed rock forever.
Don't talk to me about that! I lost a lot of wine!
Plus his amp goes to 11!
God bless Steve. His talents are not just limited to guitar playing.
Another delightful interview.
Derek Smalls is a legend in his own lunchtime.
True, what a disappointment.
Best thing in a long time. Just one after the other. Great chemistry bouncing off of each other!
"a near-death metal band"
happyfrancis - the underplay...
Brilliance. Sheer brilliance. I can’t get enough of Steve Jones or Spinal Tap! Brilliance!!!! “Near Death Metal”....... brilliant. Salmon farm. Even better! Lmao!
Chainsaw Vermin
Holy shit, Derek Smalls randomly said the EXACT day I was born. July 21, 1975! So cool
Great interview, although I was hoping that Derek would give us a live, in-studio acoustic version of Jazz Odyssey.
That would have killed! An extended version with 20% more acoustic bass improv?
Derek has a great voice. He should do animation characters.
He seems like the type that would hold out for more money

- "Yeah, whatever."
- "I can't think of anyone who's benefitted more from the death of Communism than us."
Thanks for bringing us in on a lovely chat between blokes.
I loved how Steve Jones played this so straight.
I love how they were impersonating each other
I think much of it went over his head - Harry Shearer's often just too subtle for him. 😆
@@johnnyboy2k I agree, when Harry said he had a mate who played in a Near Death Metal Band it seemed to pass Jonesy by
@@NoxiousRob That line had me splitting my sides open!
Derek Smalls on bass guitar. He wrote this.
Blimey, you pair of silly sods! Very amusing, more power to both of you...... love from South London
This is one of the best ones i have seen man.. great laugh
It was fun watching these two interact.
Steve is just great to listen to,admire the guy and always have.

Imagine that he also did the voice for Montgomery Burns. I used to work for his wife, Judith Owen, a fantastic musician in her own right
I avoided this one until I ran out of Jonesy Juke Box Videos. OMG. I saved the best for last. OMG. He dressed the part and everything. So f'n funny.
"If you put all that on a piece of paper it has flavor."
an instant classic ! THANKS men !
Derek sounds like he's doing Harry Shearer.
Loving the new Split screen thing
my two favourite bands
This interview really puts a perspective on things
harry shearer was on the pilot episode of leave it to beaver, check it out! dudes been in the entertainment game since the fifties, it looks like he's wearing David st. hubbins wig?
Anytime I think I've found my favourite Jonesy's Jukebox I find yet another 😂
No Derek Smalls, no Spinal Tap. PERIOD! Derek Smalls IS Spinal Tap. He rocks!
Nigel is Spinal Tap, his music is based on Indonesian folk
And what, Sir Derek, have you done with "Saucy Jack"??
We've been waiting 41 bloody years, man!
I imagine that "Shark Sandwich" is my favorite album by Spinal Tap. If my mind was a couch, they have definitely left their imprints. Legends.
The two word review was shit sandwich😂
excellent
“Near death metal band”. Killing me.)
The grants were paid for by the $$ left over from “austerity” 😂🤣😂🤣
The only thing funnier than This is Spinal Tap is watching it with the commentary turned on since they are all in character.
Love this! Its made my monday morning!
Laugh out loud moment:
"Buurrp."
"What you have for breakfast?"
"I'm trying to think."
"You should know now."
😂😂😂

Slow... soft... FM radio... that takes... its time...
So good.
God, I love British humor.
I hope Derek still has his telephone kiosk cleaning business, its a very important job 😃
Methinks am waiting for Mister Lottery too. What a crack me up! Great Show Jonesy/KLOS!
When Derek’s Hollywood biopic is finally released it will be titled Jazz Odyssey.
And why not.
Two L.A. radio greats collide.

Capt Notsobvious (and me) say: " This is fookn brilliant!"
I really enjoyed this interview.
@ 3:07 "And I'm here to do you....I'm not doing you, I'm doing your show" Haha!
"Oh, it's not a rodent"? "Well it runs along the side of a road".
Steve hasn`t seen an Armadillo since the one in the Clash`s Rock The Casbah video in the early 1980s lol
🗣Tremendous!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Steve , you need some pie and mash with liquor !!! Hope you start feeling better !
A TRUE MENTOR AND MUSICAL GENIUS YEASH Roberttyrannymirabilio
Caught out by the “pasty” 😆
This interview hit me like an armadillo wrapped in tin foil...
Is that the mammalian Texas armadillo or the reptilian Louisiana armadillo? It matters because you have to pair the wine properly.
love Derek!
Christopher Guest does the best British accent of The Tap.
4:20 started at San Rafael High School
Got his hands full of goats" 😂😂😂😂
I want that jacket !!
Sqweerl. Squirrel? Caught the Yankee out Jonesy!
Still, he does a bloody good accent for a Yank
His accent is crap, always has been, he sounds like an australian (pay-sties, sqweerrl)But this is definitely in the top 5 Jonesy interviews.
I learnt that an armadillo is a reptile. Thanks Derek.
Only in New Orleans. Elsewhere it's a mammal.
"If you go up there with a bird, who cares about Brighton?"
Like a seagull would, you mean? :0)
In true Spinal Tap style, right at the start of the video, an assistant positions the mic for Steve and then Steve moves it back again.
😂
Seen Spinal Tap at one of the first Bumbershoot Festivals in Seattle.
I'll have a gator sandwich and make it snappy!
😆😃😂😂
Oh cripes, for a few minutes I was trying to place 'Derek Smalls' as a real rock star who would know Steve Jones. And I wondered why he sounds a lot like Christopher Lee.
Too small to milk. Very good. Perfectly delivered and they nearly blew it.
Harry Shearer .......amazing. You'd think he was English, wouldn't you?
Except for the pronunciation of squirrel. He is great!
parkviewmo Oh yeah, and pasties.....
He also says "twentyfive hundred" instead of "two and a half thousand".
you wouldn't but it's not bad
he does live in London...
That was great
Derek Smalls has been living in America too long,he's losing his British accent.
it can happen if you travel' or live in two places, Odd How Some folks accents 'Never 'Change. any ideas' any one?

Money left over from austerity . Classic
The lukewarm water of rock and roll.
“Near death metal band”
Gawd if only Michael Cain would just show up
Derek and Jonesy doing Derek and Clive..this gives me the horn...
It gives you "the Salmon and Prawn"
You could try a little Desenex on that.

Yeah. You could have kept it to yourself. It broke my mood.
Where is the video post for the interview with Andy Summers???
Boudosaved i support the movement to get an andy summers vid posted!
What, Andy was on Jonesy's Jukebox?!
Where's the drummer?
Spontaneous combustion
A Classic!
Is that Les Holroyd from Barclay James Harvest 🤔
If you add all that to a piece of paper..
Genius!
"Is there a Lego Doctor's Office?"
I saw the Spinals in 1974. Unfortunately their talent was not fully recognised. London's finest!

Streisand Sings... Big Bottom! :0)
Cheer up jonesy ,,fucking made me sad
The Pyramid's weren't surrounded by desert back then though, there was grassland and water and trees.
The Best !!!!!!!❤️
Voices.voices inside my head...summer teeth
lol, Jones is good at word-association play. How does Shearer know so much about England to talk like a native like this?
kcirdrab .....months of arduous research in regional pubs?
Probably years not months!
I think he spends a lot of time in London, his wifes British...
That'll explain it then, thx.
His wife, Judith Owen, was born in London so it helps when you're surrounded by an accent and references.
