Nice reaction. Enjoying your intro to the greatest sport in the world. I grew up playing and continued into my 30’s. I also spent 7 seasons as a referee and plan to go back to it next year. Overall scoring in the NHL peaked in the 1980s, which saw 7.66 goals per game on average. By the early 2000s, it was down to 5.34. Better goaltending and coaching are two big factors, along with an increase in obstruction (holding, hooking, etc.) that was permitted. A bunch of rule changes, combined with an influx of speed and offensive talent in the past decade have the average up around 6.6 currently. 50 goals is a benchmark for an elite season for a player. There were generally 8-10 guys per year in that range through the mid-90’s. Compare that to a TOTAL of 27 over a two decade period, with 9 of those being from Alex Ovechkin. This season, there are currently 10 players on pace for 50 but it’s still early.
PLOTS!! WELCOME!! And thank you for the absolutely INCREDIBLE comment, I now know to keep you at a short distance for any future questions 💪🏻💪🏻glad you enjoyed
The new international bridge connecting Detroit, MI and Windsor, ON is named the Gordie Howe International Bridge in his honour. He came out of retirement twice in the 90's and early 2000's respectively to suit up for a single shift with a couple different minor league teams, meaning he played in 7 different decades. When Maurice "Rocket" Richard passed away in 2000, his funeral was broadcast on national TV across Canada.
None of that even comes close to the local and international impact that Wayne had … or, ya know, the actual production Wayne had. Theres no debate. It’s Wayne, then everyone else.
The reason a lot of these guy's point totals are so high is because goal tending and overall team defense has improved a ton in recent years. Back in the 70's and 80's the average NHL game had 7 or 8 goals. Starting in the 90's that number started dwindling to around 5 to 5.5. Today there is a slight bump, probably closer to 6 but, still extrapolate that extra 2 or 3 goals per game over an 82-game season and it adds up. EDIT: That being said, McDavid scored 153 last year. But, that was the first time someone broke 150 since Mario Lemieux did it back in the day.
Cmac! Thank you for watching, I did say to few other comments too that I believe as athletes have become more elite/level in a lot of ways, records will definitely be harder to beat at least for a few more years I'd say
Canadians invented the today's versions of 1) Baseball in 1838 and 2) Lacrosse 1859 and 3) Football in 1874 and 4) Ice Hockey in 1875 and 5) Basketball in 1891. This modern version of Ice hockey was developed in Montreal, Canada in 1875 and has spread to the US and the rest of the world. This rough and tough full contact version of ice hockey is known as Canadian Hockey and has been later adopted by the US and is now becoming known as North American Hockey. The NHL, was not the original hockey league but is a combination of now defunct leagues. The NHL was comprised of more than 90% Canadian players but is now down to around 50% Canadian players. Canada is the reigning and ruling nation of hockey having more than twice as many international wins as the next closest country, Russia. The Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy, to win, in professional sports. Involves an 82 game season and a round of four series of best of seven games to claim it (min 16 to max 28 games). There are 32 teams, 7 Canadian and 25 US teams. While the Stanley Cup has not been won in Canada since 1997, Canadians always win the cup as most players on Stanley Cup winning teams are Canadian (ie. 2023 Vegas GK 19 of 20 were Canadian and Florida, 16 of 20 were Canadian). Checking: initial contact from shoulder down to above knees. Cannot use elbow, knee, head or stick to check. Also cannot hit a player from behind - on the numbers. Additionally, you cannot jump, you cannot charge and the puck must be there or have been there within the last 3 seconds for a check to be legal. Players move at speeds of upto 28 mph or 40 kmph, wear less padding than footballs players and are on ice. Hence, despite being approximately 20% smaller, NHL hits are 17% harder and then you land on ice. If humanly possible, hockey players get backup after a hit. Laying on the ice, diving, faking an injury is not tolerated by the league nor the players, including your own teammates. Hence, players who commit such acts are disliked by teammates and seldom respected or protected. If it happens in hockey it doesn't tend to continue. The puck is hard vulcanized rubber and is frozen for game play. Shots average 80 to 100 mph but can go as high as 120 mph, hence, the puck can break bones of you are hit, including foot and lower legs. Fights are illegal and players receive a 5 min penalty for fighting. To score a goal the puck must fully cross the red goal line in the net and cannot be kicked in or batted in with the hand. It can deflect off the foot or arm. Hockey consists of three 20 min periods. Unlimited substitutions where play does not stop to change players. The clock stops when play stops. There is no 'out of bounds' but if puck goes into crowd game stops and restarted using a new puck. If tied, there is 5 min sudden-death OT then, if needed, shoot-outs happen. During playoffs, no shoot-outs, they play til one team scores. Hope this helps.

Gretzky is the GOAT, no one else compares however, there is a rookie named Connor Bedard who will probably dethrown Gretzky. If anyone has a chance, it will be him. My personal favorite hockey player was Wendell Clarke - check out the best of him on youtube.
Ranking players in different eras is really difficult. Would Gretzky be Gretzky if he entered the league today? Assuming he had the benefit of modern training etc would his natural talent still make him as dominant? No one is ever going to score 200+ points again unless they shrink goalie equipment back to the size it was in 80s.
See that's what I ask with all sports.... considering how far sports medicine and recovery, diet, weightlifting etc has come in the last 40 years, would legends still have that edge if they were drafted in this era, would their careers play out the same

Gordie Howe who played 32 years to not have near Gretzky's point totals after 20 should signal the list is squat. Gretzky is the only guy to score more then 200 points and he did it a number of times he still owns over 90 NHL records Gordie Howe is not even second on career points any more. Gretzky still has more career assists alone then any other player has career points total. Longevity doesnt make you the greatest player ever Gordie Howe is not even 3rd on my list. Also Ovechkin should be on this list which is obviously skaters only, because including NHL players over all then Brodeur and Dryden should make the list they brought home numerous cups some on their own shoulders alone and own many records. This list is nonsense.

Wellllll Bobby Orr was a defenseman so would not get the most points but what a player. Top 5 have to be in no order Gretz, Orr, Lemieux, Howe, and The Rocket
A fair few have said about Gretzky! Glad you enjoyed
I love Geordie but damn when I saw 99 at #2 I almost turned it off.
😂😂😂 too much for you this time? Glad you enjoyed MSG!
Haha sorry I’ve just never seen a video without 99 at the top. I enjoy your videos and journey discovering hockey. Keep it up bro.
@@MSG44 I'll be honest, A LOT of comments have been shocked at him being at 2 haha
Matthews
Mcdavid
Kucherov
Mackinnon
Makar
That’ll get you going
That's a damn fine list 💪🏻
@@ExploringTheSmoke I’m a leafs fan that’s why Matthews is first. Lol. Biased
@@pattaccone 😂😂😂
Lol I agree with ya mate Mario Lemieux should be higher and he’s 4th
I gotta say out of the whole list he definitely stuck with me, his whole life/career has been incredible, everything he overcame Nd everything he's achieved including let's not forget GOLD medals from the Olympics 😂 what an absolute machine
Goaltending got better eventually, leading to not quite as many goals and points.
I put it down to the modernization of training and nutrition 😂
I’ll just say as you dive into hockey that as far highlight videos I wouldn’t watch anything from before the 90’s as the game has changed so much. With the exception of fight videos… some of those old ones are way better
😂😂 thank you Backhand, I'll bear that in mind with the highlights, I appreciate the knowledge, glad you enjoyed
Lemieux will always be my favorite player. Go Pens
What an absolute Beast too, breaking records and kicking the arse of cancer
Do some goalie stuff, and my fav Evgeni Nabokov(Hopefully) and get sub
Sounds like a plan! Added to the list! 💪🏻
Hope Nabby gets reaction as I have not find any + 4th reaction channel I asked
The goalies deserve more attention, as the players get a lot more attention then us@@ExploringTheSmoke
Nabby, that his nickname Sharks fans call him
List is void for not having Wayne at 1
Haha, thank you Corey, a few people have definitely shared this sentiment today 😂
no steve yzerman, no joe sakic, no jaromir jagr, no goalies, and no bossy or trottier. cmon. the list should have at least two of these. drop messier, and...i'll say lafleur.
Ooooh, more people for me to check out, thank you Doaf, you legend
Captain Canada! Welcome! Thank you for the comment and I gotta say a fair few comments have said this list is clearly someone's own personal preference, I'll definitely be looking into other countdown lists, thank you for watching regardless my friend
Hey what about the goales MARTAN BRODOUR? THEY ARE"T PLAYERS.
Ohhh maybe best saves would be something to look up, thank you Hoodat! Glad you enjoyed
far as goalies go, i'd take hasek and roy over brodeur.
All 10 are Canadian...
I didn't even realise hahah! Glad you enjoyed, Damon
How is Wayne not no 1 ???
Since watching this I also question it haha, thank you for watching Joe, glad you enjoyed 😂
This list is… not bad, until you pretend Gordie Howe is number one.
Thats is beyond ludicrous, particularly by the terms set out in the video.
Wayne, Orr, then Howe.
A lot of comments seem to have split choices on this list....but EVERYONE is happy with Gretzky 😂
@@ExploringTheSmoke
I see that! 😂 (It was a dash shocking, not gonna lie, lol.)
@@ynks07 heyyy mannn, if I even knew who Gretzky is/was/the player....that's gotta be saying something 😂
@@ExploringTheSmoke that’s such a great point. Gretzky may be only NHL “name” that’s truly transcended the game.
Good vibes, dude! Ima check some other vids. 🤙🏼
@@ynks07 I appreciate you my man, have a good time and enjoy 💪🏻
crosby should be 4th or 3rd
Appreciate the comment Bart 💪🏻
no, he shouldn't. he deserves a spot in the top 10, but if you're putting him ahead of lemieux, gretzky, orr, or howe, you're just ignorant about hockey.
@@doaftheloaf Doaf, thank you for commenting, I'm still new as we know....but I feel like after reading your comment....I gotta agree, top 10, yes
Not sure I would put Messier on this list. Amazing career but not really a guy who changed the game in any way nor was he ever the best at anything in his era. I would put Jagr or Ovechkin on this list over him.
A few others would definitely agree with the messier view
Sorry but Gretzky is the greatest of all time on the ice
MANY, many people would agree with you there
Lol gordie ain't number 1 can anyone who actually knows hockey, knows that
Most comments so far have wanted Gretzky at 1 I have to say 😂
@ExploringTheSmoke because he is. He just is and there really isn't a debate... When anybody gets close to holding as many records as Gretzky does, let me know
@@johnfive2440 yeah, I gotta agree there, after looking him up a while ago....the guy was something spectacular
Terrible list.
Who would yours be Sakki?
