    I have always like Joan Baez. She has a wonderful voice. This song is perfect for her voice. she does such a great job. A.P., Sarah, and Maybelle Carter would be proud.

    Joan Baez is just plain classy. An American original. We will not see her like again any time soon.

    I am going to tell you that this, in my opinion, is one of the best Muppet Show episodes ever made. What is really nice about this episode is the touching part between Miss Piggy and Beauregard, as she tries to explain to him about the rats taking advantage of him. I wish there were more of those moments within the show.

    Joan and Steve Jobs were indeed an item during the late '70s and early '80s, and are presumably sitll friends today. (In her 1987 memoire she mentions Jobs in the acknowledgements.)

    Like other great folk songs, the lyrics are adapted. That is the folk process, and is part of what makes the genre great.

    I wouldn't call this an 'anti-war' lyric. Yes, it's been changed, but given the context of the show, I think it's more like a 'nature and humanity' version. The original lyrics are very much about a great afterlife 'in the sky, Lord, in the sky'. I love the 'make your better life here and now' sentiment! It's what I believe...

    Traditional folks songs, such as this, are adapted and changed. (That's why they're usually credited, "traditoinal, arranged by XYZ"), and they're sung differently in different regions/times. There are about half a dozen different "versions" of "House of the Rising Sun", for instance.

    To RayBeckerman... this song was written by Ada R. Habershon, about 1907. This is a very old song. :)

  • @taddyd1
    @taddyd1 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The changes reek with the "touch" of Baez, who is well known to change lyrics to give them a political punch. Paul Simon, a good friend of Queen Joan, aked her to specially note on the album cover, her change "Is the church really dead?" from the original "Is the theatre really dead?", on her 1967 recording of S&G"s Dangling Conversation.
    She added lyrics to the old country Christian hymn "Tramp on the Street" to include an anti-war verse.
    A skilled diva like JB can always pull it off!

    everybody sings a different version of this song. i would call this the family of man version as opposed to the ant- war version. Remember Grace Slick and Linda Rondstat both called Joan the singer they tried to sound like. I know Grace sounds a lot more like Buffy Sainte Marie than Joan but she did tell Rex Reed Baez was her model voice but "I smoked too much and screwed my voice up"

    @Redtailhawk8 I don't know what shmuel said, but I disagree about your comment, "The Reagan era ushered in cynicism and ended the sense of community". Reagan is perhaps the greatest leader of the 20th c., one of our greatest presidents. The only people I know who don't feel a part of this community are mean spirited liberals. I can think of one famous American, who said she wasn't proud to be American...until her husband was voted in as president. I think she is of this of this ilk.
