    Hi there! I plan to visit svlabard hopefully next year 2024. I have a couple of questions
    1. What time of year was this filmed?
    2. Can I rent or buy a firearm while I am there if I want to explore by myself? And if not a firearm what about bear spray?
    3. Any places to go swimming in Svalbard?
    4. Random question- does Svalbard have a movie theater?

    • @RollingRoutes
      @RollingRoutes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Irving!
      How exciting that you're going to Svalbard, I hope you'll love it!! In answers to your question:
      1. This was early September, the first snow of the year happened the day after we left.
      2. I thibk you can rent them yourselves but you have to get a licence (not sure if it has to be a licence specific to svalbard too, sorry!) You have to carry a firearm and flairs, bear spray is not enough to be safe.
      3. I know some people do swim in the sea, and I believe there was a swimming pool on the island, though we didn't go there ourselves!
      4. Yes there is a movie theatre! It's at the top of town in longyearbyen, they had a literature festival going on there at the time we were there. In the winter months they also have a movie club!
      Hope that helps! When are you thinking of going?

    Contrary to popular belief, Europeans (not him) from a few earlier centuries never liked to live in frigid places all year long, and years in the northern reaches of the geographical Inuit areas of their countries where it's forever frigid and icy almost all the time. Only Eskimos / Inuits liked such places of those three countries and Imperial Russia all year long and all around the north pole actually from just north of the Arctic Circle. . During the time of Peter the Great, North Sweden and North Norway and North Finland exported or deported all their Inuit Eskimo populations living there 300 years ago or so, living around the Arctic Circle to Imperial Russia and north Russia and Siberian Russia, in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia. This was how Sweden the other two countries got rid of their Inuit populations and Eskimo populations about 300 years ago, in exchange for money. They were exported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money. The Eskimos were replaced by whites with a Nomadic lifestyle in North sweden and Norway and North Finland in places closer to the North Pole. I forgot the name of that ethnic group, like Sami white Inuits or white Eskimos, which had a similar lifestyle to Inuits. Like Inuits, the Sami white tribes likes fish and reindeer meat. All Inuits / Eskimos of North Sweden and North Finland and north Norway were deported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia about 300 years ago.

    No, Svalbard is not international territory. Svalbard belongs to Norway.
    The Svalbard Treaty
    The Svalbard Treaty was signed on 9 February 1920 and entered into force on 14 August 1925. The treaty was ratified by The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark, USA, Italy, France, Sweden, Norway and Japan. It was later ratified by many other countries, including the Soviet Union (Russia) and Canada. There are now 46 parties to the treaty. “The Svalbard Treaty recognises Norwegian sovereignty over Svalbard, including Bjørnøya (Bear Island), and that Norwegian law applies within the archipelago. The treaty also provides certain rights for the other signatories, including that their citizens may reside and engage in business activities, hunting and fishing in the archipelago.

    • @RollingRoutes
      @RollingRoutes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charly, thanks for your comment. I think your comment may be wrong, and the treaty members have right to engage commercial activities on the island, but is open to all entirely visa free. (We did meet a Mexican on the island who is not part of the treaty countries who was doing exactly this).
      Do you have other information to correct us on this? Also interested to know what the other mistake was. Big hugs, Chris.

      @@RollingRoutes they might be allowed to come as tourists, but legally they are not allowed to live or work here. And this kind of misinformation is causing a lot of frustration with us locals here, as we keep getting flooded by "job applications" (literally some of them are just a "hire me or you suck" email) from people that have no right to live here and only have watched videos like yours spreading misinformation due to bad research.
      And watch the first few seconds and then look up the actual date for sunset and rise and you'll see there is weeks of difference between those dates.
      As a svalbardian, I stop watching any video about my home town, if the first minute already contains bad research, granted usually it's more along the lines of "3000+ polar bears", so at least the wrong start and end of the polar night was a new one

    • @RollingRoutes
      @RollingRoutes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charly, thanks for the reply,! Are you able to send some links to any official sources stating people can only come as tourists and cannot live and/or work on the island, because we can't find any information of the sorts even on the governor of Svalbard website. Happy to be corrected but we cannot find this info anywhere currently 😊.
      It doesn't sound nice about getting job applications like that though, why would you hire someone who is rude to you even in the application, sorry you have to deal with that!
      And apologies about the polar nights dates being off, it was more for example purposes of the length of time, but you are right we were off on that one.
