Peter won 19 awards for sledgehammer video and he swept at the Grammys. He filmed much of it under glass for about 21 hours to film it. He's a musical genius. 👍👏

No CGI, No green screen, this was filmed. With a camera. Frame by frame, and his lips had to sync with the music the whole way through, this is next level dedication. I remember being blown away when this came out.

This video, when it came out, was so groundbreaking. Nobody had seen anything like it, because it was filmed and was basically stop-motion. MTV was like five years old and Peter Gabriel immediately elevated the art of the music video with Sledgehammer. He's still an amazing performer and creator. He's just amazing.

Unfortunately, in modern times people more more have accepted and got too accustomed to mediocrity and lack of originality, it is almost an expectation now. I am a musician and when I learn songs from pre-early 2000's back to the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and on, there was so much variety and creativity and talent. Now one can learn 4 chords and know about 90% of the music today. Same chords, same progressions, same generic melodies, same boring song structures, the only difference between songs is the key it is in and the type of singing voice.

I don't think any of us realized just how special a time we were living in at the time. Those first 3-4 years on MTV was one of the most creative periods ever. You had a brand new format and artists were trying EVERYTHING. Every week there was something brand new, never seen before. I would come home from school in 8th grade, turn on MTV and it would stay on all evening until I went to bed. The 5 VJ's were like friends. The next day at school were would talk about any new videos that debuted the night before. We just took for granted it would always be that way.

Bands like three dog night, Chicago, Doobie Brothers and so many more were playing every instrument. When we watched this in the 80's, we were sitting their with our mouth open. We can't believe one can make such wonderful things in a music video. It made it to MOMA even and was long on the lists of best MVs ever. (Think it still is) Nowadays we have teenagers who are doing such things at home. I like how you still have respect for what Peter Gabriel did. And his song is even good without the video. Please also check out Genesis' "Jesus he knows me"- this is fun too.

Great song, one of the most iconic songs not just of the 80’s but in pop music history.
I would like to add that when people say they don’t make music like this anymore, you have to remember we’re listening to the best of the best. There was plenty of crap made back in the day as well (and that applies to whenever “back in the day” is for you). And so in another couple of decades we’ll be listening to the top, massive, hits of today and saying the same thing (“Uptown Funk”, anyone?).
There’ll always be great music. Thanks, Jamal, for bringing the older stuff back for those of us who remember when it was new and for those of you for whom it’s new now.

Very well said Jamel, at 69 years of age I grew listening to all of these songs, it was a different times than today. There was so much great music to listen to if you could think outside the box.

Iconic videos? "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer, followed up by "Simply Irresistable."

I'm surprised you never talked about what Gabriel was actually talking about in the song. All the symbolism. S-E-X

He is talking about the lack of it. He says “if” you bring your blue skys back....I kicked the habit.....if you show for me I will chauffeur you. She don’t like him no more, and it don’t seem like she wants him back despite his little song. He musta done sumthin baaaaaaaaaaaddd.....

That’s ‘cuz it’s pretty standard come-on stuff. Just there to give the sounds and style something to hang on.

There was a band called Genesis, Peter Gabriel was the lead singer and Phil Collins was the drummer. Peter left for a solo career and Phil said I can play drums and sing! Both did very well!!

Suggest “Games Without Frontiers”....”Shock the Monkey” and “Digging in the Dirt” Then it’ll be time to dive into Genesis and Phil Collins next.

Peter Gabriel was to Genesis what Roger Waters was to Pink Floyd.

I hadn't long joined the RAF when this was out, I remember being in the NAAFI having a beer at RAF Brize Norton and this came on the TV in the bar, I was so taken in by this amazing video and song, I think TOP GUN Danger Zone followed it, another superb track by Kenny Loggins. Nice one Jamel, appreciate you taking the time to react to this excellent 80s music.

In 1986!! I remember it so well because when I went into labor with my daughter, and I was put in a hospital room, my husband asked me what I wanted on the TV. "MTV!!!" was my answer to get my mind somplace else. And my daughter was born, as I watched "Sledgehammer". The 70's and 80's were life!
