They predate humans. These demons are among us. Let lines and monumental pylons of both nature and man's toil have held them back. Track history and human migration/expansion coincides with the sprit defenses built to protect our ancestors and us to this day.

I live in the middle of what was Algonquian lands (Michigan) and grew up with these myths and stories because the Native People are still here and they're memories and history deeply honored. Sure the dark and shadows can hide dangers but when it snows and the night is bright and the moon black, its so much more terrifying to hear the crunch of snow from a footstep not your own or a distorted howl in the distance. They come with snow and bitter cold that changed them, flitting across the land like wraiths ever-hungry. No defense other than to never go out at night and keep the fire warm and large. Its honestly why im happy its usually deer running across a field towards the road when driving at night in winter but i never look to hard unless its not. Never know whats just behind those trees or peaking behind a barn or trench along a long empty country road.

So I live right next to a forest that I often go on hikes through during the day time and it is idyllic and inviting during the sunshine hours, filled with bird-song and the sounds of rustling undergrowth caused by wind or small critters but can be incredibly unnerving at night (obviously). Currently it is 1:30 in the morn and I had my headphones on and decided I wanted a cigarette so made my way outside. I made my way out into the middle of my yard away from the comfort of my living room lights and was just gazing into the tree line, imagining something unseen looking back and immersing myself in the atmosphere. I turned around briefly in the direction of my house then heard the sound of footsteps and an intensely low, menacing growl. I turned around suddenly half-expecting to see some deformed creature reaching out to steal me into the darkness, my heart almost literally in my throat. I felt very stupid as I was aware I had headphones on the entire time and knew it was coming, didn't help one damn bit! Suffice to say I finished the cigarette early, shuddered in existential dread then very quickly made my way inside and turned on every light...perfect soundtrack if it can elicit the feeling of dread. 10/10 but not doing that again!

Hey, what she probably saw is know as a Water Deer. Also known as a vampire deer because of its fangs - yes, fangs - water deer are native to Korea and China, but have spread, after first being imported to Great Britain in the 1870s, France, Argentina, England and parts of the United States. From a distance, they look a lot like regular deer. It could also be a Musk deer, hope this helps!

I live in Scotland and a few years ago me and some friends decided to go to a mountain bothy (hillwalking shelter, basically an old crofters cottage) for one of the guys birthday weekend. The bothy is located on the shore of a sea loch (Loch Long) and we did a spot of fishing and just chilling out, i don't drink or smoke but the rest of the lad's enjoyed that sort of thing but i wanted to be alert incase something happened to one of us. Loch Long is located in Argyll and Bute which is a massive county that boasts beautiful scenery and has stunning mountains and it's also part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park, it's truly stunning. The first night went great, no issues and none of the other lad's fell into the Loch or went missing i stayed awake and made sure that everyone was safely inside the bothy and i was sitting outside by the fire talking to a few hillwalkers who were also staying in the bothy. The next day we all got ourselves together for another day before going home the following day, across the Loch is a oil offloading facility and oil tankers come in, off load their cargo and it's then pumped over to the refinery in the east coast of Scotland so there's a constant humming noise of pumps running and probably electrical equipment running at high voltage. In the afternoon me and one of the hungover guys decided to walk up the side of the mountain back to the car which was a good 4 or 5 miles away parked up, there's a gravel road to the bothy but only the park rangers and emergency service vehicles are permitted to use it but at least there's a decent footing to the car. The other guy said "why don't we take a shortcut through the woods and hopefully get to the car quicker?" I was very hesitant about the idea but eventually decided to go for it but a good 30 minutes into this ridiculous idea and after walking through marsh and deer dung plus the bloody midges bitting my body I'd had enough and told the other guy that I'm heading back to the bothy, so he angrily marched away trying to keep going. I was soon lost in the very dense forest and thought if i make my way back down to the shore and follow the shoreline in the opposite direction I'd get to the bothy easily. So now I'm on my own trying to get back through all of the horrible stuff I'd went through but i was getting disoriented and thought well i can hear the people out on their boats with their engines running, i can hear the oil depo, the birds the water hitting the rocks, the problem was i knew i was going downwards and everything i could hear was disappearing like i was heading further away and at the same time i felt a very strange presence which very quickly turned to absolute fear, i very quickly became petrified my heart was pounding and i was breathing quickly but i kept walking down and the sound of my feet crunching the dead sticks disappeared, I truly felt like i was in the presence of a witch or something similar it's the most profound thing ever to have experienced, i swear it felt like something pure dark was watching me from behind one of the trees and i knew it was following me down to the water, as soon as i could see the shore by god i ran like the devil himself was chasing me, about 20ft from the rocks all the sounds came back, I jumped onto the rocks, slipped and banged my arse and back but when i turned around to look back at the forest i could hear the sound of the small twigs and sticks snapping as if something was running back up the forest away from me. It's an experience I'll never forget and hopefully doesn't happen again 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

POV: it was one of your friends behind
P.S. That kind of thing happened to me one time.
One (dark) day, I and some friends were going to camp in Michigan (Algonquian forests, bla, bla, bla) and I told the stories about wendigos around the campfire we lit up in the middle of the night. We couldn't fall asleep because, I don't know why, but probably because the long travel and all. So, nobody believed me even if I tried to convince them and I, kinda angry, closed myself in my room. I lurked through the window during an hour or two before I saw some kind of humanoid silhouette running by. I would say it was a friend running to get more marshmallows, but NO! It was something with sharp horns, something that looked like the wendigo, and I swear I saw it running by with its heavy footsteps. It freaked the hell out of me and I decided to go check it out. I opened the window and ran after the creature (don't ask how fast I run through dark woods, seeing nothing except the darkness). Then I heard some kind of sticks snapping behind me. I turn round and see some kind of silhouette in the bushes. I froze on place, because I couldn't run away. There was trees behind me, and there was that outline in front. Then it ran away and I did the same, but to my room. I never told this to friends, because it felt like if there was a real dark power that didn't give me the strength to. I hope it comes back some day.

Until Dawn is garbage. Those aren't Wendigos, those are Gollum's cousins. It was better when it was purely the real but maybe fake but also real psychotic killer angle.
Wendigos are spirits that possesses people who perform cannibalism or are too greedy. They're a personification of starvation and the coldness in human hearts.
Wendigo psychosis is/was a real medical diagnosis for Native Americans, however.

Ello! ^^ im a Algonquian Native(Plains Cree) and im glad that our myths/legends are getting more attraction from a outside point of view, but People also have to remember that Wendigos are NOT something to mess with, No matter what non-believers/haters say... WE have these myths/legends for a reason and it would be nice that (sry about me saying this, as i know some do respect the spirit, this is for those who DONT) SOME people stop saying "theyer not real/its just made up" type of comments.. because Wendigos are VERY REAL and should be respected :/
(in our culture and im sure other Native Cultures will agree with me on this... But we are as Natives know that everything either it be a spirit/evil/good and nature itself MUST be RESPECTED.. otherwise bad things happen and we always end up on the blaming end .. Please people, respect Native cultures when we talk on stuff, because most if not all the time, its coming from a reliable source and the stories of myths/legends are more warnings to future generations... thats all i have to say and im sry about this being long, but it just peevs me sometimes that people dont listen to us when we try to only help. ^^' )

We took a misshapen skull and antlers from the riverbank, found at the end of a hard journey through a cold Summer in the wild North. Something had chewed through the back of the cranium, in or out was hard to tell, the stains from the mud suggested most beasts had let it be for some time. Later, far to the South, we cut off his antlers, and I kept what was left of his head until I was West of the mountains, where I sunk the remains in a burnt lake; they drew blood before departing: even without a jaw, the teeth were sharp enough to bite flesh. So I let a few more drops of red to the Fall river, like so many before in the Canadian Shield, red like the ancient figures painted on the stone cliffs my blood had burned before. Now I do not wonder: what is a wasicun when the fat is all gone? Lean, cold, and so very, very hungry.

The "wendigo" you're thinking of, with the antlers, is actually a wechuge.

It is currently 2:37 in the morning as I write this comment. I live in France, in the countryside, with no neighbors within 2 km. My house is at the edge of a vast forest. It's a warm summer night; if I open my window, I can roughly hear the sounds of animals coming from the depths of the forest. Despite all the comfort I have, I still feel a sense of survival, which I find incredible here. I can assure you that going out a bit at night, venturing into the forest, or chopping wood for the winter, just listening to the sounds of the animals, the silence of the forest, feeling the energy it exudes, is something special. Watching and listening to this video makes me think of all that.

    Heres is a story
One night, a family went out in the forest to go camping when they realized they didnt have any firewood. The parents sent their son to look for some wood deep in the forest. After some time, the parent were getting very worried. They go to look for their son, but see no trace of him. They keep looking and looking, but still no sign of him anywhere. They thought about giving up because it was no use wasting their time looking for their son, but thats when they heard a long, deep, and menacing growl. They get frightend and run off back to the site, but realize they have gone too far and were lost. They tried to call for help but there was to ranger tower near by, or anyone for that matter. There was no signal in the forest. Then, they heard a terrifying screech coming from the woods. Thats when they realize.. that there was no escape from what people call.......
    The wendigo
They ended up seeing it and when they did, they stopped in their tracks, frightened. They couldnt move, and with the blink of an eye, they went missing.
    Never to be seen again..
    The end

The way the camera or we, are sitting(looking at the ground in the middle) implies that we got seriously injured and we’re just lying there. Listening to the sound of the forest and a “deer” walks by (one at the beginning on the left side) and then we notice it double back and simply circle us as we wait for our end and we just tell it to bugger off and come back later.. because later between 12:00 or 15:00 the camera shifts to the right, like we’re trying to get comfy as the same “deer” comes back and simply lays down beside us to wait… Skinwalkers are said to be witch doctors, Wendigo are the starved that let hunger and the dark voice win, over listening the teachings of old. Not to sure and what the story with Wechuge’ are but… still pretty scary, less so when you’re already on the reapers list and the last thing you want to do is listen to the howling wind and shifting tree one last time, no amount of Wechuge or Wendigos will get ing the way of that.

10/10 ambiance. Though don't listen to it when out in the northwoods at night. I got heckin spooped.
One of the weirdest things to me is how everyone added deer horns to the Wendigo mythology. Suddenly, all the imagery and descriptions had horns, deer skulls, all that jazz. Almost universally. (I blame deer with CWD.) But in the folklore, it was more like the critters in Until Dawn. Like a bigger meaner Smeagol. Or that's how they were always described in the tribe. Though... Not really the kinda thing you just go and ask an elder about. With what I've heard and see, I'd almost be afraid of the answers.

And maybe those indians were canibals or idk. Im not saying that those deer horns and skulls belong on wendigo but its just a little theory i made after reading your comment. These kind of mythological creatures are still very prominent in todays stories and lullabies here in Serbia. Since the old history, the religion and beliefs in Jugoslavia have usually taken inspiration from old fairy tales and took more of a pagan-approach. Tho it has been orthodox for some centuries, many Serbians, especially the older generation, remember all the stories and songs about forest witches, creatures at night and many more.

@@restforthewicked6842 Thanks! I am currently working on the information about it and will be working on the digital art illustration of it later. This project started out as a personal project, but now I am also doing it for my biology course. I can send you the link to the Deviantart page where it is if you want. :)

@@restforthewicked6842 Yeah no problem, and thanks! I've also got the information and part of the lore about it written out. I am even making an illustration of it on Krita and will publish it on the art website gallery I use. I will give you the link to the art image and the information for it later! If you'd like to check it out. This is also sort of a college biology project at the same time as being something I started before I took the course.

The longer I listen to this, the more I keep thinking I’m missing something that’s staring at me from the trees.
    This is awesome.
Edit: By the way, that part at the end with the Wendigo just out of the shot is the cherry on top.

Sorry but the description of the Wendigo is kinda inaccurate. its desiccated skin pulled tautly over its bones. With its bones pushing out against its skin, its complexion the ash gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into their sockets; the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave. It doesn't have antlers.

The wendigo is able to make people eat other people, they are the embodiment of greedy people if you are greedy you become one, if you're consumed by one you also get turned into one of you consume enough human flesh. Hope this helps, I know I'm missing a lot of details but I have more.
