Wow! I occasionally wondered who won the 1st Nobel Prizes..it seems this guy was a true "angel on Earth"...I salute all the folks out there who unselfishly help others. You know who you are. Thank you!
I am a volunteer of the Italian Red Cross, and while in the first course we take we learn about Dunant's life, it is sad to know that his wonderful efforts aren't recognised so much outside of the association. Thank you so much for spreading his story!
Working w the Red Cross in Canada, I learned a few new things about this honourable human being. Thanks for taking the time to help inspire others today as Henri did so many years ago. Peace.
Wow, I had never heard of Henry Dunant until now. He was a truly great man and outstanding humanitarian. Great that the word has been shared here. Dunant truly deserves to be honored and remembered.
William Victor Henry Dunant voluntarily resigned, since he felt like the bankruptcy (which he was forced to declare) would have damaged the image of the comitee. Furthermore in the first years the efforts of the red cross were directed toward directed to the wounded in wars and mediation with the countries involved, while in later years the action was extended to the population in time of peace. Nonetheless the others member of the comitee weren't very nice with him.
Henry Dunant was too much of a selfless man to accept help but I suppose that's a common... fault of people that help others. I mean he didn't want to have a funeral, didn't use his Nobel Peace Prize money on himself... As much as the Red Cross Committee could of helped him, He's just not that kind of guy.
It's sad that history loses sight of the great people like this but not the bloody or evil ones. Thank you for reintroducing him to us! That is a Hero.
The Good that men do, is buried with their bones. The evil that men do, lives on and on. (paraphrasing from Julius Ceasar, a play by William Shakespeare)
Today we often remember those best who won wars. Henry Dunant tried to stop wars and ease the suffering in war, yet he is all but forgotten about - which is really a shame. Let's remember him at least every May 8th, and remember what he encouraged. Unselfishness and charity to those in pain, where ever and when ever.
and he's the one in europe who specify the need of peace over wars and had a very soft hearted, in Pakistan we saw abul sattar eidi do the same work organised eidi foundation. thanks to dunant, eidi and all who's done or doing work for humanity.
The truly unselfish live and die unremembered this gentleman was the definition of dignity and incorruptible character a true but unsung hero ... but I believe this is the way he wanted it only the people that can appreciate his kindness are worthy of his memory and legacy ..
2:02 IT'S FUN TO STAY AT THE *YMCA* ! It's fun to stay at the *YMCA* They have everything, for young men to enjoy. You can hang out with all the boys. It's fun to stay at the *YMCA*
I recently started working in a museum that pays tribute to Henry Dunant, so this was a nice surprise to see a slightly more in depth video about him. As I understand it, Dunant and Hertzl were quite good friends, having come together with hope of solving the Jewish peoples plight within Europe at that time.
Another great video. I'm really enjoying this series. Do Salah ad-Din (Saladin) or Cincinnatus. Maybe a politician will see it and learn what civic virtue means.
Thank you for enlightening me I will pass on the information gleaned from this episode to people I meet in my daily life. Perhaps it will introduce others to an amazing person that I have only been introduced to at this moment, cutting down on his obscurity by a little bit.
Even in death the guy didn't care to have nice things! In his shoes, I would have taken that nobel prize money and used at least some of it to set myself up to have a comfortable rest of my life before giving it out, honestly. Impressively selfless
He is right about war and how brutal it gets with civilians paying a high price for it, Added the refugee crisis, terrorist attacks then natural disasters the Red Cross is needed more than ever.
So any chance you guys have or would do a video about why people walk into propellers? Seems like something interesting you'd cover. I've managed to watch most of your videos and I love them! You guys are amazing!
As a current student in SRK Winterthur, learning about this wonderful man who sacrificed much, for the many, I plan to visit the town & museum that started something, more amazing than I ever could have imagined being a small, insignificant part of. If only, in this digital age, we had more inspirational people, in tune with the World's needs, to assist, instead of ganging up on individuals, for having a different perspective, or approach, the world could be a different place, in a slower, more mature manner, while also looking back & smiling about the achievements that are waiting to be discovered, bringing us to a world of balance & harmony, without freezing the 'balls off a brass monkey'. My ironic sense of humour, reminds me that benign jokes, bite us later on, esp. when thermodynamics are at play, in a way they never have been, pre-2020 ;-) Oh & by the way, I'd like to see more horses in police forces & defence forces, once again, maybe ambulances too, as well as family friendly dogs, to disarm people, rather than alarm them, in the name of peaceful resolutions, not requiring medical treatment(s) ;-)
To add to the series, perhaps you can consider doing an episode on a USSR soldier during WW2 who by himself and a cannon held off a large amount of Germans. Or the tank commander who with other few tanks managed to destroy about 40-50 German tanks. If this interests you, Simon, perhaps you can research more into it.
My aunt always swore that we were related to Clara Barton - The founder of the American Red cross. She liked to make a lot of claims though so I always put in this asterisk.
The Red Cross has a award called the Dunant Award which is given to a group of individuals that have shown to have the principles of the Red Cross in exceptional circumstances.
I feel like that's the opposite of what Dunant would have liked tbh Seems like his whole life was about loving humanity even at it's ugliest and lowest
Wow, what a humble, incredible man. I hear these types of stories and get frustrated thinking of the selfish, dimwitted narcissist in the White House surrounded by all his equally unscrupulous cronies.
It’s so sad that not a lot of people know who he is. He founded the Red Cross! He won the first Nobel peace prize with Frédéric Passy! He is a true hero ☮️.
That is mostly what they are now. They were founded as youth centers and temporary lodging for traveling men. Young men of the town were encouraged to hang out there pray and play instead of roaming the streets looking for trouble. YWCA was founded for the same reason but for women only
And heres the sad thing: Even if you grow up in switzerland you dont learn about him in school. As part of history lessions we get to learn about the founding of switzerland, including our wars, but nothing about this great man...
Charitable work doesn't pay well - except these days when organisations like HRW have massive salaries and undue influence - in return for promoting US foreign policy. In fact the majority of charitable funds goes to professional operators like Brooklyn marketing agency Purpose Inc raking in hundreds of millions for it's new media projects such as Avaaz and The Syria Project.
We need _a lot_ more people like Henry Dunant in the world. I mean, I love that humanitarian organizations heal communities that are damaged or undersupplied. But what if there were people willing to build up such communities to the point of something so much stronger? What if we could overhaul the living conditions of, say, Puerto Rico, until said living conditions resembled those of any major state in the US mainland?

I like this definition of "badass."
Its so sad that so few knows about Dunant despite his numerous contributions to society.
even sadder that everybody instead remembers war heroes who often did nothing but cause suffering
Absolutely. He was a truly great man.
Although I am a Japanese high school student, I came to know him because there was an article about him in my textbook.
This is a true bad ass. Kindness and humility is a far tougher act than violence and brutality.
Wow! I occasionally wondered who won the 1st Nobel Prizes..it seems this guy was a true "angel on Earth"...I salute all the folks out there who unselfishly help others. You know who you are. Thank you!
Castle Chick no the first one were the parents of Alfred Nobel the got Alfred him self.
It's surprising how he hasn't be sainted but I suppose that would actually go against his wishes!
I am a volunteer of the Italian Red Cross, and while in the first course we take we learn about Dunant's life, it is sad to know that his wonderful efforts aren't recognised so much outside of the association. Thank you so much for spreading his story!
Greetings and mutually shared feelings over such a unsung hero.

What a wonderful example of a person. I do wish he had taken better care of himself though. We could all learn from his kindness and generosity.
Wow, I had never heard of Henry Dunant until now. He was a truly great man and outstanding humanitarian. Great that the word has been shared here. Dunant truly deserves to be honored and remembered.
Well done. The times we live in urge us to celebrate such an example of selflessness and empathy more than ever.
A wonderful and inspiring look at his life.
Yes,true sadness. And the bitter irony; "no more money? Well then, out the door with you." This by an organization set up to help those in need.
William Victor Henry Dunant voluntarily resigned, since he felt like the bankruptcy (which he was forced to declare) would have damaged the image of the comitee. That's a humbling tale indeed. A life well lived, for sure.
+1 If the YMCA song played in your head when he said it..
Well, Im now going to listen that song inspired by this illustrious first Nobel price winner
Proud to be a volunteer in Red Cross. Our history is what unites us all over the world.

OMG that man is amazing! Spread the word Simon!
The truly unselfish live and die unremembered this gentleman was the definition of dignity and incorruptible character a true but unsung hero ... but I believe this is the way he wanted it only the people that can appreciate his kindness are worthy of his memory and legacy ..
I am so touched...
I wonder how can someone dislike this video. God bless them.

"Carried to his grave, like a dog" ....
Damn, that truly some humble stuff.
New lesson learned....a humanitarian as a Bad-ass....Fascinating!
his story is one of those that give me hope for humanity.
Another great video. I'm really enjoying this series. Do Salah ad-Din (Saladin) or Cincinnatus. Maybe a politician will see it and learn what civic virtue means.
Damn, Simon... you LOVE serving these up with fresh-cut onions, don't you?
Love your badass series. Please keep it up!
Thank you for responding.
We need more humans like him.
Thank you for enlightening me I will pass on the information gleaned from this episode to people I meet in my daily life. Perhaps it will introduce others to an amazing person that I have only been introduced to at this moment, cutting down on his obscurity by a little bit.
The Henri Dunant park is less than a mile from my home, the Red Cross lane runs past it. Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Wow!! The man was a saint and will surely attain the highest of honors in our heavenly father's kingdom ❤
Ah....memories of red cross knowledge lessons as a cadet of red cross...proud one to...

ProdBy Es-O yea hell on wheels.
The founding president of the University of California, or the Anglican bishop, or the British opinion pollster, or the founder of Wellesley College?
Even in death the guy didn't care to have nice things! In his shoes, I would have taken that nobel prize money and used at least some of it to set myself up to have a comfortable rest of my life before giving it out, honestly. Impressively selfless
Gideon Jones dont lie zamas, you’d go and spend that money on a ningen destroyer
Me? Use your filthy ningen currency??!!?!?! Please, I am a ningen destroyer. After i steal that idiot's body....
Horrible-Artist699 only because they are evil, and not kind like this guy was. He was worthy of being spared, but the rest must face Justice!!
What a hero of a guy
He is right about war and how brutal it gets with civilians paying a high price for it, Added the refugee crisis, terrorist attacks then natural disasters the Red Cross is needed more than ever.
Thank u 😊 Dunant

Excellent.
I always say "Hello, Simon!" in my head when I hear his intro
Thank you for including this for "badass week" rather than just focusing on warriors.
He was the Batman of charitable works.
He's my new hero. Froreal.
My aunt always swore that we were related to Clara Barton - The founder of the American Red cross. She liked to make a lot of claims though so I always put in this asterisk.
Beautiful
an award in his name would be more fitting than the nobel
The Red Cross has a award called the Dunant Award which is given to a group of individuals that have shown to have the principles of the Red Cross in exceptional circumstances.
Stories like this make me hate humanity. You’re doing an incredible job on these lately. Thanks.
I feel like that's the opposite of what Dunant would have liked tbh
Seems like his whole life was about loving humanity even at it's ugliest and lowest
Wow, what a humble, incredible man. I hear these types of stories and get frustrated thinking of the selfish, dimwitted narcissist in the White House surrounded by all his equally unscrupulous cronies.
truly truly a badass, so sad he's not known by everybody :(
Guess which song is stuck in my head now.
Well. I'm crying a little now.
It’s so sad that not a lot of people know who he is. He founded the Red Cross! He won the first Nobel peace prize with Frédéric Passy!
He is a true hero ☮️.
If only people cared about peace and not just themselves, it's too bad people couldn't listen to the whole peace thing (and that they still don't).
Badass week makes shark weak look like guppies.....thanks an keep this up we Love it
you shold do a video on the YMCA. I had no idea that they were so old
I hope they plan on doing Cazmir Pulaski
Funny, I live in a street called the Henri Dunantstreet in Belgium
It seems that Dunant's greatest flaw was also his greatest strength; he cared too much for other people to the exclusion of his own well being
🎂Henry Dunant 05-08-2022
I thought the YMCA was a gym.....
As part of history lessions we get to learn about the founding of switzerland, including our wars, but nothing about this great man...
wow, so good he was badass
A bit sad that the video of this badass has less views than many of the badasses who's feat consist on killing people.

Very interesting. I wonder if that nursing home is still in existence in some way and if they still honour his wish about the free bed?
