Something that really shines in this hack is how many different instruments are used to re-create the banjo OST. I noticed with other rom hacks is that they uses the same 2-3 instruments to re-create other songs, but in the mario 64 sound font.
That's because they are restricted to staying with the same instrument samples used in the original song. One person did a music import test and the same song played throughout the test, with the instruments changing depending on the level the player is currently on.
Nice video! I had to smile when I heard Bowsers laugh in Gruntildas Lair, it gives it a nice touch and fits so much :D And the next one could be Mario in Banjo Tooie? Would be incredible!
5:04 oh my god, seeing RtYI right after SM64 gameplay really puts into perspective how much better it looks. Seeing everything added one by one doesn't give you the same idea
Banjo-Kazooie ost is such a banger, it'll definetely be hard not to ask for a playlist with the entire ost! That's something i always wanted when i was a child, seeing my two favorite N64 games together. Looking forward to this.
I need a game that when you beat Bowser in SM64, it says "Thank you Mario but our Princess is in another castle". And it sends you to the Banjo Kazooie world. After beating Bowser there, it sends you to the Donkey Kong 64 world. And you play all as Mario.
My childhood brain would EXPLODE knowing in about 20 some years I could play one game inside of another. Kaze you are a madman. Thank you for all your hard work!!!
Oh my god those songs sound so fucking good. Also, I don't subscibe to your TH-cam and Patreon for this, or for RTYI, I subscibe to them for EVERYTHING you have done over the past few years. Mario Odyssey 64, Ocarina of Time Mario, Last Impact, Super Mario Bros. 64, Super Mario Sunshine 64, Through the Ages, and many others have given me HUNDREDS of hours of amazing entertainment. Thank You Kaze!
I see them as sharing the same universe. Mario and Donkey Kong know each other and have interacted quite a lot, Diddy is Donkey Kong's nephew, and Diddy knows Banjo and Kazooie.
They would have to be reanimated, but most of the transformations are designed to be pretty easy in that regard. If anything, the hardest part would be texturing on the suspenders.
Honestly, this sorta thing is absolutely what I subscribed to you to see. Crazy fun projects like this are always a joy to see. Keep up the great work!
I wish to see a complete decompilation of Banjo-Kazooie's code one day and see the wonderful community give it the Render96 treatment like Mario 64 has now.
I’ve been on a N64 kick lately, with Mario64 and BK being probably my top two time sinks with how replayable they are and how easy they are to start and finish. This is like a dream project
the Banjo OST with Mario sound uh, instruments? is incredibly surreal, like they're so damn close but something is just that little bit _off_ to make them feel wrong. might just be the listening to them in isolation from the game thing, they'll probably sound fine when actually playing.
Yeah, some of them I think "wow it sounds the same" others are "wow that sounds so different" and a few have a kind of uncanny valley effect you described
Not to brag, but I might have been the first person to combine the two games. Not with any real effort. Just the levels of Banjo in Mario, but it brought some minds together to create Banjo's Backpack.
Kaze, the busiest man in all of modding. You and the guy working on the new Mega Man X corrupted that's been in development for 10+ years now. I need to get an Everdrive and start playing some of your masterpiece games. Thank you for you do for all of us.
I'm looking forward to playing SM64 on original hardware with your new optimizations, can't wait for it to come out! It's been over 20 years since i've played that game and I want to relive it exclusively with your code. Seeing this is also exciting, I wasn't a banjo fan back in the day and didn't play it, i thought it had too much slowdown and the atmosphere just wasn't for me. this new cleanup is great and with how pretty it is, and the chance to play mario in it, looks really promising! Could be that I finally get into banjo-kazooie!
This is really cool! I never played Banjo back in the day, and not having the nostalgia for it has made it not very compelling to me like mario64 is. This will be a great way for me to explore the game and have a good time 😁
Did you implement saving the note counts between levels? And has anyone considered just a hack of Banjo Kazooie that adds this? It should have enough memory to at least keep the notes after a death, if not when you travel from world to world.
One thing I'm wandering about is the dynamic music Banjo-Kazooie is known for. I know Mario 64 had some level dynamic music but is the same system as Banjo's or did they also upgrade that part as well?
This is super cool. One thing I always hated about Banjo was the complicated/clunky movements, so I think this will be a much better game than Banjo. I can't wait to play it!
@kaze Emanuar, Are you intending to pull in the more advanced techniques/code/libs/etc from Banjo & Kazooie into your Mario 64 engine? It kind of looks like you could use your M64 engine as a more generic N64 game engine, which would be cool.
Not gonna lie: When I read the title, I thought that was literally going to be libsm64 getting ported into the Banjo-Kazooie engine. Although... I suppose for that to work, we'd need a decompilation of Banjo-Kazooie first.
thankyou for showing off your wizardry once more. I hope when your optimized sm64 engine is complete, people port functionality from banjo to it, and then port the game entirely over. Maybe then it will run at decent frame rates and full resolution!
The madman’s gonna have Tooie, DK64, Conker and Rayman SM64 hacks at this rate. Before we know it there’s going to be another video outlining how Kaze somehow managed to improve performance by another 40% to achieve 60FPS in the N64’s high resolution mode.
Kaze and friends use black magic to once again make something I never thought would be possible. This looks so cool and I can't wait to play it.

Why can't we all be this talented?
what the guy before me said, and there are so many people who just abandon projects because they really don't have enough inspiration.

This mod is absolutely what I subscribe for! Would love to play it on a real N64.
5:06 This looks like a PS2 or Dreamcast game, very smooth and clean..
It's still in my belief that there are some Banjo inspiration when creating Mario Odyssey, Cappy has those trademark Rareware googly eyes lol
That cut at 5:04 blew me away. The engine optimization makes it look like it's running on different, much newer hardware
Amazing to see my Reddit comment at 1:30 come up about the difference between Mario and Banjo. I feel famous! 😅👌🏻 Incredible work as ever Kaze.

THIS LOOKS AND SOUNDS AMAZING !!!
this is amazing
Seeing this makes me wanna see Mario in DK64. I know it has be done before but I'd like to see it with all the new modding Kaze has learned
Kaze makes me so happy. I can’t believe he releases all this for free.
Thank you Kaze for all your hard work!

Patiently anticipating the release of the Mario64/Banjo-Kazooie crossover.
I just want to play this man's Mario hacks for the rest of his life.
5:45 I subscribed for anything and everything N64 related. And I also happen to be a massive Banjo-Kazooie fan. So this mod is AMAAAAAAAZING!!!!!!!!
It already looks so good and to hear that you still have a lot more to do gets me super excited to see the final product.
I see them as sharing the same universe. Mario and Donkey Kong know each other and have interacted quite a lot, Diddy is Donkey Kong's nephew, and Diddy knows Banjo and Kazooie.
Outstanding (as usual). Looks and feels so well!
I’d like to see Mario versions of the transformations and stop and Swop items
They would have to be reanimated, but most of the transformations are designed to be pretty easy in that regard. If anything, the hardest part would be texturing on the suspenders.
That OST conversion is excellent.
SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!!
