Saw an 850R Wagon while out with some friends a couple weeks ago. I was freaking out over how rare it was and they thought I was crazy for actually liking a box on wheels.
I can only imagine what it must have been to first drive for the people in 1997; incredibly smooth sounding, engaging experience, silky-like transmission. Volvo cars are truly great!
@@erroristmusic Totally true, my dad has a used 850R and the previous owner didn’t take enough care. In the 3 years he had it he spend more on repairs than the car itself…
I love this. Topher is just silently showing us all the reasons why old cars are better. No silly self driving or assists that a competent driver shouldn't need, or iPads glued everywhere. Just fun cars that are trying to be nothing more than cars!
Dude your car is seriously nice, I really want one of these but they're hard to come by The amount of rattles it has is comical but in a charming way, love your car Chris!
@@TheTopher haha I get you Chris, my mk6 GLI rattles like insane, but we deal with it in order to have a car we like You deserve the praise, your car is immaculate!
I own a 2006 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD with 326,000 km and still going strong, fast and reliable, one of the greatest engine ever built the T-5 Turbo, Volvo for life.
This is making me jealous! Old Volvos are pretty rare here in Australia. I've never seen this car on the road. Love your channel, hoping for more content about your personal cars.
Didn’t know much about this Volvo but just wanna say the owner kept it pretty well! Even the seats are in very great condition for its time! Just that door closing sound is like I broke something. Great drive it still sounds pretty good!
I watch a lot of TH-cam but this was one of the most satisfying videos I’ve seen in a long time. Such a pristine example of the 850 and the sound is just wonderful. Thanks for uploading this.
Such a clean and beautiful 850R. I wish my T5M was that clean. Plus you have forged rods which really gives you so many possibilities when it comes to performance modification. I have factory cast rods in my 98 T5M making 300hp and naturally I'm slightly worried, but the car is such a blast at that power level. If you get the urge for more power a 19t, intercooler, Japanifold, 7cm angle flange, NA cams, green injectors, bigger fuel pump and you will have a very rowdy, very daily drivable car.
I have a 1997 Volvo 850 T5 and i love it. I need to restore some pieces of the car, but in general is in good conditions. And obviously i hope to enjoy it for many years. Greetings from Chile!
I love watching POV drive videos of stock or mostly-unmodified Volvo 850s specifically. There's just something so therapeutic and relaxing about the smooth purr of the Inline-5. I can't say the same about my P80 C70 which is straight piped and way too loud to have any sort of calming effect, lol
Hello Volvo, my old friend I've come to talk with 850R again Because a 5 speed manual softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence
Awesome video Topher! Watching this makes me sad that I sold mine :( Maybe one day I'll fetch another 854R, but until then I will enjoy your POV's to make me feel proud of what I used to have.
A golden era for sweden 🇸🇪 850 R and T5 had quality in the 90s, altough my S60 2,4 isnt that bad its sure is better with 850 due to that thoose original parts is still holding thoose cars, summer 97 was a good one for thoose lucky owner 😂😊
Topher, When its time to possibly move on, and let someone else enjoy that amazing piece of engineering. Message me!! Im in Boston and have owned a red s60 r of the same color. Thats one i would love to own. Big auto enthusiast here.
Very nice video, I have a swapped ‘95 wagon myself. Do you know which variant of the M56 yours has? Also, if you’re ever looking to move from the stock springs, H&R feel fantastic with the Bilstein Touring dampers.
Ever driven one of the mid aughts Rs? The S60/V70s that were made to compete with the E46. I've got an S60 R with the M66 manual and they're a ton of fun
They look like a blast! Really wanted to buy Randy Pobsts wagon a couple years ago haha. But I haven’t driven a well sorted one and always have wanted to. My mom has a great 02 s60 5-speed but it’s fwd and naturally aspirated. And I drove a beat s60r manual briefly but that barely counts.
@@TheTopher I got my S60 just back in April. It's an '04 with 170k miles on it. It's been a bit of a project, and it's kinda seen some things it shouldn't have already. But then you roll onto the throttle in 2nd and forgot about the issues

There’s something about five cylinder Volvos that’s just so special. Drove a C30 the other day that’s a lot of fun
Right? I love my 3.0 t6 in my xc70 but they sound no where near as good as the 5 cylinder turbos
Comparing C30 to 850 T-5.... Jesus...
@@Tasmanian_D3vil the c30 is also a t5, and can be had with a 6spd manual. The 850 is great but so is the c30
It’s great how you let the car do the talking for so long. So serene.
That 5 cylinder engine sounds absolutely awesome.
I have driven 5 cylinder Volvo's for quite some time now, there's no other car quite like them. High quality and engaging.
Excellent cars. My buddy had one in high school we called it the red dragon

Crazy to think old Volvos are rare in some places. Right now when I look out of the window I see 2 old Volvo boxes 🤣
The car looks very great for being this old
It looks like it's 2-3 years old max. What a beauty.
cradits go the owner bro
I haven’t seen an 850 that’s been this well kept in a long time. It’s lived a good life! Very thankful to the previous owners for their care
What's the mileage on the red dragon?
I was amazed how well kept the seats are.
