    As a librarian I see all kinds of censorship nonsense from parents. Some of them will try to get books with swear words and sex scenes off the shelf, but then they're fine with their kids reading books that glorify suicide or domestic violence.

    • @britanygarcia3951
      @britanygarcia3951 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I hate censorship of books. I wrote a whole ten page essay about why it's dumb to do it in 11th grade lmaoo. In case you didn't figure it out, I love books.

      That's just dumb. I read these books and they are really good books. Better in high school to read but no reason to pull it out of school

      I like to read urban fiction books a lot what are some series or books do you recommend?

    • @dhrachth1
      @dhrachth1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@adriannadavis3597 It's been awhile since I worked in the fiction dept. but some authors that stayed popular for a long time are Sister Souljah, Carl Weber, and Ashley Antoinette.
      I encourage you to ask your local librarian. Even if they're not personally an urban fiction fan, most librarians that work in fiction have access to industry resources to keep up with the latest trends and popular titles across genres--so we can recommend books to any customer.

    Stop coddling kids. They need to learn about this country's history. How can people learn critical thinking skills if they are protected from anything that might be controversial. The more they know, the better.

    I could be wrong, but I feel like most teachers do give disclaimers before giving their students these kinds of books to read. At the end of the day, teachers are not responsible for how the information is received, they can only control how they present it. Unfortunately in this day and age people will always be offended and will struggle to look past how books like To Kill a Mockingbird make them uncomfortable...which was part of Harper Lee's intention when she wrote the book, to bring awareness to racial injustices! If TKAM makes you uncomfortable, then congrats, you're reading it right. It SHOULD make you uncomfortable. That's where the opportunity for learning why it's wrong comes into play.

    I am white and among my people I saw those who genuinely didn’t understand why was it wrong to use the n word. Of course it comes from ignorance , but they have been so sheltered from everything , including history , that it comes to the point where it’s just ridiculous . If they don’t understand why it’s bad , there is nothing holding them from starting to use it , especially teenagers. So , obviously it’s not my place to speak about it , but I would think it would be better to teach all kids from a young age about it and with banning everything that’s connected to the history of oppression you will make it seem like it never happened

    WhaT about the word "BITCH" FIRST used by men as a discription of a a rude woman(or worst) but also gals be calling each other bitch " in a good way"" but i notice. If someone calls you a " bitch" in a bad way, it has less meaning now then 20 years ago when " your a bitch" was fighting words. Now you call someone a "bitch" they will say "thank you" and some will even say they have it tatooed on thier "ass" i guess time takes away the power of a word when you hear it enough times.

    I don't believe you need to teach someone the atrocities of the past in order to not do that in the present day. You need to teach them LOVE... we need to teach our kids to keep love each other the way they naturally do. Kids love everything and everyone naturally. We adults teach them about hate and resentment. I do not agree in keep repeating these atrocities in kids minds. Let that go. Write a new book of love !

    I HATED To Kill A Mockingbird. That was my least favorite book out of all of the books we read in English class. Thing Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is much better.

    i dont like it when ppl call women ho .s. i don't know if we should desensitize these hurtful demeaning slurs .
    it was not cool than it is not cool now. call him the brother, call her foxy
    find something instead of the demeaning word.
