New York Fencer's Club may call themselves the oldest continuously running fencing club because the Boston Fencing Club shut down temporarily during the Civil War as every member became an officer in the Union Army, but they are not the first fencing club founded in the United States.
The thing is, if it was founded ONE YEAR earlier, then it was founded in 1882. The American Civil War took place from 1861-1865. So what you are saying can't be true just by looking at a time line.
