    i saw birdman six times in 1976/77, they changed my life. i first saw them at the oxford hotel while on holiday in sydney from toowoomba (queensland), they totally blew me away, i'd never seen a band play with such high energy and commitment to the moment. i bought the 7" burn my eye ep by mail order and moved to sydney so i could see them regularly. by the time i got there they had started the oxford funhouse, i saw them a couple more times there, once at a private girls school social on the north shore(!!!!), and their first adelaide gig at the marryatville hotel - i'm even in the abc footage from that gig. they were awesome! last time i saw them was maybe 2004 at seagulls football club on the gold coast - they would never have been allowed to play there back in their heyday! they played with the same energy and intensity as when i first saw them. fabulous band!

    Radio Birdman is, in my mind, the most criminally underrated band in rock music history. I hold a soft grudge against the rest of the world for not making them as big as The Beatles...

    • @barrynelson7613

      Absolutely right! They were the equal of the Stooges. I will never forget seeing them do 'New race' on the ABC afternoon show 'Flashez' and going down to my local record store in little old Tasmania and being able to buy a copy of Radios Appear! I was shocked that the guy behind the counter had heard of the band. They were a million miles from Saturday night fever, John Denver, Abba and whatever else was getting all the airplay then. I had to wait until 1996 to see them (twice) but they were still brilliant. By the way, I bought a copy of the bootleg Eureka Birdman! in a record store in Hobart in 1979, not a great recording of a gig in Geelong but interesting to hear songs that were recorded on the Living eyes album but didn't surface until 1981.

    • @blueshorecreative3146
      @blueshorecreative3146 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      well, they would never be as big as the beatles, but that's a good thing. I would have liked them to be as appreciated as The Saints, for instance. It would just be nice if more people got to appreciate them.

    I was doing guest overdubs in the middle of the day (monday) for our (stalled) lp in 2018 at Zen Studios and heard a band doing a kick ass version of Don't Fear The Reaper. I hung outside listening till they finished. Who walks out of the rehearsal room for a breather straight after it?

    Such a killer band. I missed them as a young man, until I was in Utopia Records in Sydney and "Radio's Appear" was recommended by Ray from The Hard Ons. I saw them at The Croxton in 2018, spent the show standing about feet from Deniz and they store the house down, plying this ferocious show, I remember when they came back for the encore they played Amboy Duke's "Journey To The Centre Of The Mind". So fucking cool.

    Radio Birdman were on my bucket list for 40 years whom I first saw by accident in 1977 or 78 on the late night ABC program "Rocturnal" playing the now famous gig at the Marryatville Hotel. Sadly, they never toured Western Australia when they were in their prime, which is where I grew up. I finally got to see them in 2018 in London at The Dome in Tufnell Park. Cracking set, too, playing to a couple of hundred people. Will post some videos of it on my TH-cam channel soon. I've also been to Rockville Studios in Wales, where they recorded, for session setups for Black Sabbath.

    Radio Birdman didn't tour the States until 2006 or so but I DID photograph their US "debut" at the Wiltern in Los Angeles and later, in San Diego.
    Before that, around '91 or '92, I saw the Deniz Tek Band play a free show at a San Diego bar.
    He used to live here, you know. After leaving Radio Birdman, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he became a fighter pilot ... AND a dentist. He worked as a surgeon at the SD Naval Hospital for a couple years. And before the RB reunion he was working as an ER doctor in Wyoming while recording his solo albums.
    Bizarre factoid - Tek is the inspiration for Val Kimmer's character in "Top Gun" ... but I've never seen it.

    Hey Damo! Larry from Steel Cage (and Carbon 14 magazine) here. Just stumbled across this video. Thanks so much for mentioning/showing the Hungry Cannibals 7", it's arguably the record that Leslie and I are the most proud to have released. FYI - the A-side is the the album cut (from Zeno) with the keyboard intro edited out, and the B-side is completely exclusive and has never appeared anywhere else (as far as I know, and I think Deniz told me this, it's the lone leftover track from the Zeno sessions). Anyway, I think I have a dozen or so of the red vinyl first pressing in my basement. Want one?

      @@MagicThys Yeah I should do more of that but sometimes labels don’t like their music being played in a video and they flag your video which causes issues due to copyright n stuff. It’s crazy that it happens when all you wanna do is promote the music to people so they can hear the songs and decide whether they want to buy it or not. Podcasting, TH-cam, etc have all helped me discover new records to buy.

    The Saints and Radio Birdman were setting fire to music while Countdown force fed us Elton John, Madonna etc which is why I have no nostalgia for Molly Meldrum and Countdown. Occasionally something slipped through like Iggy performing I'm Bored or Joey Ramone hosting.

      I think mine has the red RB emblem on a white cover (it’s hiding down stairs in my vinyl stash). It was good background to RB way back in the early 80’s. Also got to some great Detroit sounds and first heard the stooges even though I’d been an Iggy fan for years.
