I totally cried when I traded one of my cars in.. It was the first time I had bought a car that I actually wanted and not just what I could afford. As I'm looking at them taking off the plates while waiting on my new car to be ready, I start crying. The man standing beside me said: "Are you crying?" All I could say is: "I really loved that car!!" (btw, her name was Lafawnduh Lynette, she was an 05 Dodge Magnum in Inferno Red and I used to still see her around for years afterwards). I know I'm going to be a puddle of goo when I tried in my current vehicle. I bought him brand new 8.5 years and 176,000 miles ago.

I bought my "affordable dream car" last year. Both Carmax and Carvana right now will give me more than I paid for it. I got a very good deal during the panic part of the pandemic and now with the used car market being what it is, I could take the opportunity to have been paid for driving it for a year, but I just can't. I live in a high rise condo building. Between not having the expense of the car AND being able to rent my space in our parking deck to someone else, my cash flow would improve by a few hundred bucks a month. It's totally the wrong practical decision to keep it, but sometimes the heart beats the head.

Family used to own a Mercedes dealership in the 70s and I inherited literature about the history of Mercedes. That gullwing/300 SL was the stuff of dreams and what got me fascinated with cars as a kid. I tried replicating the design many times on paper (terribly) and even took German lessons for a month to maybe fulfill my dream of working for Mercedes someday. Thank you Hoovie for vicariously living the dream for many of us. It's not exactly the same when someone like Leno or Clarkson drives one and that's what makes this special.

Last weekend a Mercedes club or meeting was driving through my village as I walked to the store. Pagoda SL's, but also regular classic sedans. All in perfect condition. Suddenly I heard a beautiful noise which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It was a 300 SL roadster. Such a beautiful car with a beautiful soundtrack. And great that the owner doesn't stow it away in a garage but drives it.

I got to drive an all-original 300 SL Gullwing when I was a teenager, back in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. The owner was a family friend. He flipped me the keys and said “Go ahead, take it for a spin up the road and back.” Couldn’t believe it, and I was terrified! I don’t think I ever made it over 35 mph, praying the whole time I wouldn’t crash it. Such a cool car!

I was lucky enough to have one of these in my family for years. My dad bought it from Catron Motors in Pomona CA for $5400. My older brother drove it to HS and we had it maintained by Kurt Saunders, a German Mechanic who taught us to respect and properly maintain the cars. Wonderful car! I always loved the sound the fuel pump made when you turn the key on, the first sign of the engine leaping to the ready position. My brother sold it decades later but it was a precious part of my youth.

It has no AC, no powersteering and every other week something new is leaking or broken, but i just love it. No electrionic parts and 9/10 times you can fix it yourself in a short time. Some parts getting more rare and more expensive, but i guess its nothing compared to a 300sl :D

Yeah I just can't be the average car owner even when I try. I bought a 25 year old car for $700 and I told myself I am NOT going to care for it, just drive it until the wheels fall off! Fast forward 3 months later and I have fixed everything on the engine, done a tune up, fixed all the broken trim on it, fixed all the rust, done a full detail, aaaand I'm planning on doing a full engine rebuild so it doesn't burn oil.
How do people just run their cars into the ground? I can't bring myself to do it.

On a more serious note, Mercedes Benz has a far more interesting past than present or future. Their classic and vintage cars are timeless. Then around the late 1990s they started letting the bean counters dictate everything. Ever since, and for the future, their cars are just German Cadillacs.
But from the end of the war, even before the war with the old SLK etc, but really after the war, until the late 1990s, every Mercedes was special. No matter how many were mass produced, they were special cars.

Ehh, I think the W211 is still pretty special. I drive a W203 wagon which is just about one of the easiest cars to drive, very comfortable, reliable (with the M112 V6) but the interior quality is outpaced by the same year Toyota Camry, W211 is much nicer materials wise. At least W203 parts are similarly inexpensive like a Camry, my brother's E500 wagon has some pricey parts. I can't really comment too much on the other newer models as I haven't driven them but my parent's 2003 Sprinter they got new has been pretty good. My favorite Mercedes is a W201Sportline but I also adore the W123 (prefer a 240D to a 300D for weight balance) and W116. Also have a W124 which I have a love-hate relationship with due to the HVAC system being annoying to service and parts are getting harder to find.

Thank you YT Algorithm for bringing me here!! Awesome Hoovie!! That emotional bit at the end hit. I too feel that way about these, especially the Coupes.
In '92 I was hired to spin wrenches in a local German independent repair shop. We had quite a few customers with 911's, 356's, 914's, and vintage Mercedes stuff. The shop owner had his father's all original 1968 W108 280SE sedan, black with red interior, electric sliding sunroof, and 4 on the floor. He allow my (then) GF and I to drive it up the CA coast, on Hwy1 to Monterey for a weekend. I was like you are here, the entire time, and we were like royalty rolling around Monterey in that sled. I returned from that trip and had to have one. When I discovered that a Coupe version was made (W111) it was all I thought about. I found one in San Francisco, in the for sale ads of the SF Chronical, a few weeks later: a 1966 250SE with electric sliding sunroof and 4 on the floor, in dark blue/green (Blau Grun). It is still the love of my life, and it sounds, and spools, exactly like the Roadster here. Those long intake runners are responsible for that. Once the air velocity and volume comes up into the 3,500-4,000rpm range, these engines just spool so hard that they go right to redline. Amazing. I had the opportunity to drive a customer's Roadster a few months after purchasing my Coupe. We did a service on it, and a little prep for a local show, and I was allowed to drive it the 3 or 4 miles across town, to the hotel where the show was. I was shaking!!
