As an automotive technician who used to work at a German car specialist, the amount of supercar markup on these things is next level. You really see it in things like the fluid services. They don’t use really special fluids, but because it’s in an SLR, they is automatically 2000% mark up. Same thing happens even just between the “peasant” MB models, say between a C class and an S class. C class filter may be $50, similar part on S Class is $250.

I took it for a pre-purchase inspection and went through all the service records to discover horrifying amounts (for me) for basics such as a starter motor at over $900, and other regular servicing items that were eye watering. I was used to buying aftermarket C3 Corvette starters for maybe 60 bucks and DIYing it. There were thousands upon thousands of dollars of service receipts for this 928 and I decided against it, worried for my future financial health and well being. I did eventually own a 928, maybe a decade later, to get it out of my system. Beautiful car and it didn't cost me a dime over the year and a half I owned it.

I think the lesson is that if you want work or service done on a Mercedes of any kind, DON'T go to a Mercedes Dealership, there are good mechanics that work on Mercedes including the high-end cars regularly who will do a better job for a better price as well as knowing the ins n outs of the special vehicles they work on which can save you significantly on parts and labor. I love the SLR McLaren but they definitely got better at doing them over time, the newer ones are wonderful, mind you the normal SLR is pretty great too.

I never understood why the SLR was even a consideration, even before knowing the price and maintenance differences. The SLS is just so good!

I think your SLS is the better looking of the two. It's more aggressive IMO.

This car was stupid back in 2005, and we knew it then. The Carrera GT was the same money, $500k. Then there was the Ford GT, for $150k (plus markup, I don't know what it was).

Am surely one of the 100+ people saying "Send that thing to the Wizard and stop feeding that dealership ripoff money!". The vast majority of those prices are ultra-inflated simply because it's an 'exotic' car with no supporting logic/justification beyond that. Just no reason to use a dealer post-warranty vs. a reputable independent shop.

Keep a Japanese sports car garaged for 10 years and you might need just a battery and STA-BIL to get it going again.
