Bill Ackman's plea to President Donald Trump to save U.S. from coronavirus' economic destruction

  • Pershing Square Capital CEO Bill Ackman makes a plea to President Trump to shut the U.S. economy down.
Investor Bill Ackman urged President Donald Trump and corporate America in an impassioned plea on CNBC to shut down the country for 30 days to contain the fast-spreading coronavirus, calling it the only option to rescue the economy.
“What’s scaring the American people and corporate America now is the gradual rollout,” Ackman told Scott Wapner on “Halftime Report” on Wednesday. “We need to shut it down now. ... This is the only answer.”
“America will end as we know it. I’m sorry to say so, unless we take this option,” he said. Ackman added that if Trump saves the country from the coronavirus, he will get reelected in November.
Ackman urged U.S. companies to stop their buyback programs because “hell is coming.” The biggest U.S. banks have already halted repurchasing stocks to put their capital to use helping consumers and businesses.
Worldwide coronavirus cases topped 200,000 on Wednesday, while confirmed cases in the U.S. have surged to at least 6,496. The Trump administration is working on a $1 trillion stimulus package to combat the impact of the virus, including sending out checks to the American people and providing financial relief to airlines.
“The hotel industry and the restaurant industry will go bankrupt first, Boeing is on the brink, Boeing will not survive without a government bailout,” Ackman said. “Capitalism does not work in an 18-month shutdown, capitalism can work in a 30-day shutdown.”
    ‘Tsunami’ is coming
The founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management said he felt a “tsunami” was coming before anyone else raised a red flag about the outbreak.
“Beginning in late January I was getting increasingly bearish and I woke up with a nightmare,” Ackman said. “And my nightmare was you have this virus that replicates and infects incredibly rapidly.” He added his colleagues thought he was a “lunatic” when he took out cash from an ATM.
In the emotional interview, Ackman revealed he went into lockdown almost a month ago to save his father’s life who is immunocompromised.
“The only shared sacrifice that is going on right now is the health-care community, the nurses, the doctors, the people taking care of patients. Those people are making enormous sacrifices,” said Ackman. ”[The president] is not saying storm the beaches of Normandy right now, he’s saying go home, go home, spend a month with your family.”
In response to Ackman’s remarks on CNBC, a White House official said, “As President Trump has said, we are going to ensure that we take care of all Americans, including affected industries and small businesses, and that we emerge from this challenge stronger and with a prosperous and growing economy.”

Just to be clear, Bill Ackman purchased CDS in February meaning he already knew hell was coming. On March 9th CDS contracts had already increased by aprox $1.8B, in other words his investment was already making profit. By March 12th, the valuation of the CDS reached $2.75B so he started selling and it took more less a week to full exit. While in the selling process, on March 18th he tweeted to the president to shut down. He didn't appear on CNBC just to make profit because he already did. Please, do your own research before saying anything.

Bill "Hell is coming" and I'm going to profit like the devil Ackman everybody. Give him a hand. He's buying a lot of stocks? Lol he means shorts against all these companies and industries he was saying. He may have made this call in fear and panic but he made insider knowledge manipulate market moves to profit from it. Like this interview.
Probably a crap analogy but its like if someone walked into a casino and says to the owner "ill bet you this casino and everything you're customers loose that the people that gamble here will loose more than they win. The casino owner says "great idea!" Then the majority of people loose and the random guy that made the bet now owns the casino. With the owner trying to tell the guy how to run things. As he does whatever he wants with all of his newly printed stained money.
Is that illegal? Should it be? That's not for me to decide but the questions should still be asked nonetheless.

@@shooter7a Michael is one expert. If you go on Twitter and look at what 10-12 experts are saying the majority are in the shut it down camp. Michael is in the minority opinion (there are other experts that share his opinion). I also think we are finding that the severe case rate is higher than we thought in young healthy people. And therefore even if they survive they will likely be left with lifelong lung damage. Michael takes the position that it is unstoppable, I think South Korea has proved that he's wrong.

Just to put the virus in perspective. Part of the problem is that we have a much older population that lives longer than at any time in history. MANY of them have health issues!!! Most of those who have died from the virus are old and/or have heath issues. Those are the facts. So, if you are over 70 and have not taken care of your health.....the chances you might die from this virus go up exponentially (of course, some people are unlucky and suffer from conditions that are inherited, etc.).
In addition, and people will hate me for saying this: there have always been epidemics and natural catastrophes and there always will be. That is the nature of life. We can not stop them. Viruses mutate OR new ones arise due to often unsanitary conditions and the propinquity of domesticated animals to humans.
IF China esp. would get ahold of their food markets which are FILTH PENS.....and make sure there are no wild animals for sale for one. Two, have strict standards about the raising of fowl, pigs, cattle......where most of these diseases originate from. Strictly enforce this, we could curb or limit new viruses. So too the U.S. and other countries where animals are living in unhealthy environments. (We could go mostly to a vegetarian diet and really effect massive changes!).
The overriding fact is that 99% of humanity is relatively safe. Yes, it is a fact, that 90% of people who have died are older and their health is often compromised. Sorry but the Bubonic plague wiped out a 1/3 of European peoples because of the very low sanitary conditions and, of course, the barbaric medical practices.
If you want to keep your health, then STOP SMOKING, STOP HARD DRUGS, STOP DRINKING TOO MUCH ALCOHOL, MOVE out of smoggy cities and live simpler lives.Exercise regularly instead of sitting on your fat arses most of the day. Obviously, not everybody can do this. But I hate to burst your bubble but when you get older, esp. over 80....COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS. If you have taken care of your health, you may live to 90.
Lastly, everyone start getting used to dying. Yes, YOU reading this. You will die some day. It happens. My mother died at 95, my father at 88. That is better than the average. We have hundreds of millions of older people....or more that are just living and are not doing well. If they get the flu or coronavirus, they often die. You can not simply blame it on the viruses.....you have to realize that if people don't take care of themselves, they are more likely to die. And, also, and I know that it will come as a shock to some people...you are only mortals.
This virus is not nearly as bad as a lot of others. The ebola viruses, if they spread, could wipe out 50% of the population.
