Fun fact about Twilight of the Thunder God: The solo in the song was played by a guest guitarist, Roope Latvala, a Finnish guitar legend who played in bands like Stone and Children of Bodom. He came to the studio, listened to the track and nailed the solo on the first recording. The band, Amon Amarth that is, was stoked about it, but only later they realized they'll have to play the song live and no one could pull off that solo, so in live recordings they improvise a simpler version of it.
In "Vs. the World", the lyrics of the first verse are: "Once we were scum of the Earth Now we've cleared our names In Nifelheim came rebirth Baptized in Mount Doom's flames" Pretty sure they were called Scum before they were Amon Amarth so that verse references both
"Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars" or "TIME" song, both are EPIC, I don't know if Richard is familiar with it, but it's really worth it! Would even recommend "Wintersun - Loneliness" to approach a more sad song with awesome vocal performance.
@mr.dynamite1 the first album is special indeed, almost no channel covers it and that's a shame. Loneliness in my opinion is a top song of theirs in my opinion, also not covered anywhere :(
Why the live version, when he's purely listening and not looking at video? I feel like someone used to active listening would appreciate the album version (or the remaster on Bandcamp) much more.
is there any he doesn't like? I've only subscribed and watched a few. As a trained musician he seems to appreciate it musically at least, even if he's not a casual listener. I suggested a few songs, I think most might fall outside of accessible, a few classic thrown in though
@@jimminyjillickers6391 the killswitch- The end of Heartache track was one of the top of my head. Though he usually will find something positive or engaging to say even if a track doesn’t connect with him

Always appreciate Judson's deep yet simple take on songs. Class act. One of the better bands out there. Always keeping the melody fresh and structure progressive. Simple, you'd think more bands would do such. Wouldn't be mad at much more Amon!
One of my favorite bands to see live and one of my favorite bands of all time. My first song that got me to cross that rainbow bridge to accept this style of vocals was cry of the blackbirds.
Lokes funniest child is Sleipnir (Odins 8 legged horse). He transformed into a mare to lure a stallion away, he succeded...to well and thus He gave birth to sleipnir. he has 4 children (I know of), the last two is Hel and Fenris
One of the most consistent metal bands in history, they don't miss a single song all of their song are above 8/10 and they're still as good as always. Long live VIKINGCORE
It took me a while to get into these guys, but around the time this album came out, I couldn't help but start! The "widdly-widdly-wee" before the solo sealed that!
Great choice, nice vid. As you say, AA came up with so many iconic and, well, panoramic riffs (VS the world alone is such an epic collection) that it’s just blinding. They get you moving, like them or not.
Quality reaction as always. Some of the most fun viking metal. You gotta check out The Hero, Doom Over Dead Men, and Embrace of the Endless Ocean, absolute killer songs.
Man I'd definitely suggest 'Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags', 'Doom Over Dead Man', or 'Under Siege'. I've been listening to AA since I was a freshman in high school haha. Seeing them on their With Oden On Our Side tour was my first metal show!
Awesome song, great band, so many great songs they have. Deceiver of The Gods is my favourite album by these guys and the title track is fire. The Hero is another great track from this album, or Doom over Dead Men is another good song from the band to check out.
First I've heard of this band and was right up my street, despite me not usually going in for unabashedly mythologicalical lyrics. Bet they're awesome live!
Loved the video and the reaction. :) Amon Amarth are a really cool band, not my favorite in the Melodic Death Metal genre but they're still great, their first album was always my favorite even if it wasn't the most commercial successful album of theirs. If you really want check some EPIC melodic "viking" death metal I suggest checking out Wintersun - Sons of Winter of and Stars (especially the studio live version), its the most epic metal song ever and its a great reaction content. \m/
Brother of Metal, also a "viking metal" band, have a song called Embla's Saga. It's basically the TLDR version of the creation of the world according to Norse mythology.
The most fun show I've seen of them was in 2017 at the summer breeze, where they played to whole seths and only repeated one song (Twilight of the thunder god). the first set was purely oldschool. this was so awesome and they played victorious march in full length and twilight of the thunder god was the newest song the played at that said. the day after they played their normal headlining set on the main stage with a shit ton of pyro.
"Cry of the Black Birds" was my first song I heard, obviously became a big fan. With Oden on Our Side is still probably my favorite overall album in a discography with many great entries. He really should hear "Prediction of Warfare", one of their best songs imo.
This channel was recommended to me today (Rush - Tom Sawyer), which just so happens to be the day that there's a video on one of my guilty pleasure songs? Guess I'll subscribe lol
Also the reason they dont like be called Viking metal is because Viking metal is already a thing and sounds nothing like Amon Amarth who are melodic death metal. Viking metal is the style of music that later Bathory or Enslaved albums are.
What is Judson's familiarity as far as Led Zeppelin goes? Wondering how he would react to say "Kashmir", "Carouselambra " , "Trampled Under Foot", "In the Light", "The Wanton Song", the powerful "Achilles Last Stand" which Robert recorded vocals in a wheelchair. There are over 50 amazing Zeppelin songs I could through out there that are just amazing. "The Rain Song", freaking "No Quarter" and "Gallows Pole" !!! There are also three amazing live songs I will offer, "Bring it on Home", "Since I've Benn Loving You", and "In My Time of Dying".
Although they are much bigger now, I jumped (dragon-headed) ship a decade ago or so. I'm glad they're doing well although the last 3 albums didn't do anything for me personally but their 2000s stuff is still legendary. This album is basically their artistic peak as far as I'm concerned. With that in mind I have to give kudos to Surtur Rising and Deceiver of the Gods, because these were the first albums I bought from them. Around that time I got into metal and I think I saw them on TV at a festival and it was my first time hearing guttural vocals. My favourite album is Versus the world, closely followed by With Oden on our side. Some of my friends got into old In Flames via them, so maybe I can introduce them to At the Gates, Dark Tranquility and Insomnium... We shall see hehe. Maybe a slower Insomnium song might be another good choice for future reference. Keep it up!
In actual Asatru (Norse) mythology, Loki is actually a "blood brother" of Odin. Loki is also half-Jotun, half-god and lives in Asgard. His relationship with Odin is probably the only reason the other Asgardian gods put up with him, lol. Jormungandr is the "World Serpent" and is one of Loki's children. With one partner, Loki fathered Jormungandr, Fenrir (the wolf that is said to kill Odin during Ragnarok) and Hel (ruler of the realm of the dead, Helheim, which means House of Hel). In most Asatru sources, Hel is both the goddess and a realm, but I use the world Helheim (which some sources call it) for the realm to avoid confusion. Loki fathered more children with another partner and Loki himself, being a shape-shifter, has actually given birth as well. While Frigg is Odin's wife and did father Thor, Thor's mom is actually another goddess named Jord.
A good pick. You guys did refer to these bit groovy riffs. It is part of this thing called Gothenburg sound. In Flames, Amon Amart, Dark Tranquility and so on. All of these are from Gothenburg, Sweden and has same characteristics in their sound. Cant go wrong. And about Amon Amarth, in my honest opinion, this is their peak album, by far. Cool shows too, with the boat and drinking ale from horns. Big dude this singer too. True viking, likes it or not
Great and northern song! Fantasy aspect brought to my mind Summoning! They make tolkien metal from lord of the rings, which is great! You should check it out!
Jetson is pretty knowledgeable about the old north mythology. Here are some pieces to fill in the gaps: Odin has one eye cause he threw his other eye in the well of wisdom (to gain wisdom). Odin has two ravens: Hugin and Munin. Thor is the god of thunder, his hammer is called Mjölner (Jetson was right about that) and he bring thunder and lightning with that hammer. He got a 10-legged horse that's called Sleipner (or is it Odins horse? I don't remember). There's also a boar called Särimner whom they eat, but he is always resurrected and ready to get eaten again. Pretty weird stuff, but anyways. That is some things they believed in back then.
AA wants to be labeled as MeloDeath because Viking Metal is technically something different, it's typically seen as black metal with influences from Nordic folk music. Hordanes Land (1993) from Enslaved beeing one of the first pioneer records. AA clearly has a different sound that that. \m/ As next AA song I suggest something from Versus The World. Death In Fire, Where Silent Gods Stand Guard and 1000 Years of Oppression are my favs.
Funnily enough. Both Fänrisulven (The wolf Fenrir) and Midgårdsormen (Jörmungandr) were actually children of Loke (Loki), as was the goddess of hell, Hel. Loke himself was never a son of Oden (Odin), though, but he was "mostly adopted" and became a "raised brother" (Fostbrödralag), with Tor (Thor). Now how about that? In another story. Loke gave birth to Odens eight legged horse, Sleipner, meaning, he was its mother?
Amon Amarth always struck me as death metal's take on Iron Maiden. (Not that that's bad, I love Maiden, and I'm pretty sure the guys in the band do, too).

It would be fitting to listen to some real Viking Metal after this, like swedish Thyrfing, Bathory, Blot, Månegarm, or finnish Moonsorrow, or german Falkenbach or Odroerir. I think at one point you really SHOULD dive into the Pagan Metal subgenre which brushes up pretty close to what is called Viking Metal (musically).

Roope is an unsung hero. Easily one of the best guitarists out there.
Thank you, was just wondering about why this solo stands out so much
Awesome thx for that tidbit didn't know about that.
The Viking invasion begins!
Funnily enough, Amon Amarth is actually Mount Doom in Elvish.
And i pretty like that :D
And Elvish languages by Tolkien are loosely based on real languages, mostly Finnish and Welsh.
In "Vs. the World", the lyrics of the first verse are:
"Once we were scum of the Earth
Now we've cleared our names
In Nifelheim came rebirth
Baptized in Mount Doom's flames"
Pretty sure they were called Scum before they were Amon Amarth so that verse references both
Runes To My Memory ⚡
That song was my introduction to Amon Amarth back in '06, and it's still an absolute favorite of mine.
"Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars" or "TIME" song, both are EPIC, I don't know if Richard is familiar with it, but it's really worth it!
Would even recommend "Wintersun - Loneliness" to approach a more sad song with awesome vocal performance.
If he likes "epic" then yes this is the next song to put on the list.
Death and the Healing has always been my favorite by them
