If you want games to be considered an art form, then you have to be willing to accept criticism of that art I think people's problem with the way women are presented isn't that they're all bad, it's that they're all bad in woman-specific ways. A woman that acts like Trevor would break away from traditional roles, and could be fun and refreshing
Coney has the exaggerated swagger of a middle aged stream. But on a serious note, I feel like the line was just one that might have needed another draft (and also maybe someone who's actually black talking about it). If the writer wanted to voice how he felt about Miles representation in the game, I would want him to but it's in the same vein as "too much water" being a fair critique that didn't have the right words to back it up.
Exaggerated swagger of a black teen is one of my favorite game review moments ever It’s insane and racist yeah, but got its spawned so many funny memes
yeah no not really, it's honestly just accurate, black american culture is very expressive and it's exaggerated amongst black youth because all teens exaggerate whatever behaviours they most strongly identify with (e.g. performative wealth for a rich kid, excess gloominess for an emo kid, voilence for an abused kid, etc). losing or reducing your exaggerated mannerisms is a key indicator of maturation in all of humanity as far as I'm aware. it was only cringe because they made the awful decision to have a white guy read a script drawing on the author's personal experience as a black guy.
I genuinely don't understand why a black dude seeing the eccentricities of his own culture (and talking about them positively) is racist I think people are just defining racism as "anything that suggests black people and white people act different" which... isn't really how it works. Like yeah biologically we're all the same but we have different cultures and he was happy to see one he resonated with
@@ellie8272 Because it forgets the fact that people are individuals and that not everyone (or even a majority) acts in such a Hollywood-esque stereotypical manner. You also can’t just paint everyone with the same ancestral roots with one brush, because depending on their environment, where and how they are raised, etc. people in the same ethnic group are going to differ.
Yeah, if reviews made any sense 1 would be terrible, 2-4 would be bad, 5-6 would be average, 7-9 would be good, and 10 would be a masterpiece. But most people in the west for some reason view 1-5 as trash-decent, 6-7 as average, 9 as ok-good and 10 as great-masterpiece. It's ridiculous.
The exaggerates swagger meme wouldn't have been a meme if it wasn't a white guy narrating it, it's a meme because of people's kneejerk reaction. But Miles is over the top as hell, did you not see the movie?
Reviews are great but scores are cringe. Gamers consistently showcase how unable they are at accurately interpreting a basic numeric scale even when the reviewers explain the scale in plain english. Its a useless metric for the most part and suffocates so much discussion around the review itself.
Ultimately the problem with videos like this and the dislikes in general is that people will just be angry that the reviewer didn't agree with the established opinion of the game. When the games aren't even out yet, it makes a deluge of negative reactions to a review all the more pathetic. People don't want reviewers, they want someone to affirm their bias and tell them "you're OBJECTIVELY correct don't worry sweetie opinions dont exist."
Reminds me of how Arlo has a system of rating games from 1-7 (4 being the center, leaving 1-3 as below average and 5-7 as above average) and there was one person who thought it so incomprehensible that they called it chicken scratch.
This guy is definitely the kind of guy who complains about politics when there’s a gay character in a game. Anyone who shoots for Days Gone isn’t normal.
As a person who was once a black teen with exaggerated swagger, the writer could have put it better. I get what he meant though. I assume he was trying to explain the playfulness of Miles' Spiderman compared to Peter's Spiderman which is more mature and experienced, that would be my guess. The line was cringy but I can't lie the meme's were classic.
I got the mad max game off steam recently for like 3 bucks and loved it, fast travel was a nice feature and not because it wasn’t fun to explore but more because it’s convenient. That’s like judging Elden ring or Skyrim for having fast travel. It’s fun to explore when you want to explore and it’s not when you don’t and just want to progress the story.
That guy’s right about the fast travel stuff. If you’re main draw is driving your car through a huge wasteland and trying to survive the drive between locations, free fast travel is lame as hell. Unless you’re clear across the map, then there shouldn’t be fast travel imo.
6:45 There have been a small handful of games with fast travel that I've never used. Spider man is the obvious one but Sunset Overdrive is even better IMO because its more dynamic and interactive. Prototype was another one because the movement is so smooth in thise games and the fact that both games specifically have challenges geared toward movement says a lot imo
16:06 I think it IS art, but it's a social commentary. Everyone dislikes each kind of person in the game, because no matter how you feel, it's a gross misrepresentation. Except Franklin, love that guy
“Blinded by nostalgia” doesn’t work because as a member of generation Z, I played SpongeBob SquarePants The battle of Bikini Bottom for the first time on the same year the remastered released and enjoyed it flaws and all. Same with Quake 1 and 2 remastered, prior to them I was getting into the indie market and discovering what Boomer Shooters were. Dusk and Prodeus were the main indie games in this genre I played, then a few years later I bought Quake 1 and 2 remastered and proceeded to play them for the first time. Nostalgia has nothing to do with it when they were never apart of my childhood, in fact I’m far more critical of my childhood games like Skyrim for example. Again I’m a Zoomer so the Boomer card isn’t going to work with me.
The gta criticism is completely valid because the game often serves as a power trip/power fantasy for the player, but the whole story is seen through the eyes of a male and that power fantasy is very male driven. It’s not a women’s power fantasy, if that makes sense. I know you touched more upon that in the stream tho
I feel like the exaggerated swagger line is still terrible, but knowing that it was a line written by a black reviewer does affect my perception of it.
Ghost of Tsushima is a 9/10 game in art, 8/10 in story and a 7/10 in core gameplay. I fucking love this gorgeous game about a samurai having to go against his sincerely believed teachings to save his island against an enemy that trampled all those who adhered to the old ways.....and then the gameplay is a lot of picking the fighting style that you're told to pick for an enemy type, you do a lot of clearing enemy camps with a combination of stealth and brute force and the general gameplay is somewhat mashy offence and parry almost everything with some moves you have to dodge. Truly a Sucker Punch production, it deserves a 7/10 and I hope to god they're working a sequel where the core gameplay is so much more.
Im still kinda mad that Fromsoft created the best "combat engine" or whatever you wanna call and not doing anything with it after Sekiro Im a huge Dark Souls fan but Sekiro is the best game they ever created
I dont think whether video games are art or not is entirely relevant to the discussion of themes and purpose behind a game Video games will always have an influence on society and culture even if the discussion around that influence doesnt happen. Its important to still discuss and analyze it so we can understand the 'why' of the influence. Even if the games purpose is to "turn off your brain".
There is 1000% something to be said about the construction of gender in GTA V. You can play it off as parody, sure, but the fact of the matter is that the game constructs genders according to the status quo when you can parody gender roles without contributing to harmful stereotypes.
You know, I can see the comment about women in GTA IV, when you put it into perspective, as most often the GTA series does try to portray all people equally, while GTA V is definetly lacking in the positive female characters, while the guys even despite being terrible people get a lot of moments that humanize them, liek Trevor despite being a sociopath murderer is fiercly loyal, cares about his friends and is in a way "a lovable goofball". Every game in the 3D/HD universe did have a positive female character that were a good influence on the character. GTA III has Asuka. Vice City has Mercedes (which is shallow, yes, but ultimately someone Tommy treats with respect) San Andreas has Kendl. LCS has Toshiko. VCS has Louise. GTA IV has Kate and Mallorie. Even while Lost and Damned's Ashley is clearly a terrible person, the narrative doesn't make her into a stereotype and tries to portray her as honestly as it could for the toxic person that she is. Ballad of Gay Tony is probably the closest one to V in this, because I can't remember female characters from that game, but I imagine it was mostly the point, because it does feel heavily "boys will be boys" short story. But I think Lois' relationship with his mother is slightly explored (even if I dont remember anything about it). GTA V is distincly lacking in its female cast that would be anything but a caricature to be made fun of. And all of those previous games also managed to have humorous female characters to laugh at, but it never felt like it was taking a jab at women specifically. I imagine its something they did accidently while bouncing back from GTA IV's more serious and gloomy nature, forgetting to actually have good female characters. That stuff happens and they seem to be trying to repair that with VI. I don't think it's a big offense or anything, but the point is valid to make.
That Days Gone argument for out of context wedding scene is some BS. With the context it is still just as bad. FF10 laughing scene is just as strange with or without the context.
I gotta agree with the Ghost/Sekiro comparison I loved Ghost so much then I played Sekiro and Ghost felt stale in comparison. Still a good game w/ a good story, but still. Also thank u Coney for recommending Sekiro on stream
When people say that ghost of Tsushima is trying to be sekiro it doesn't make sense because ghost of Tsushima was in development before sekiro even started development its just that it came out after sekiro that the comparisons started. Furthermore ghost of Tsushima isnt trying to be sekiro its a completely different feeling game
wrote this in response to a comment saying the swagger line was racist, but I reckon it should be a primary comment as well: yeah no not really, it's an accurate observation and a good example of cultural representation in gaming; black american culture is very expressive and it's exaggerated amongst black youth because all teens exaggerate whatever behaviours they most strongly identify with (e.g. performative wealth for a rich kid, excess gloominess for an emo kid, voilence for an abused kid, etc). losing or reducing your exaggerated mannerisms is a key indicator of maturation in all of humanity as far as I'm aware. it was only cringe because they made the awful decision to have a white guy read a script drawing on the author's personal experience as a black guy.
Dude days gone got shafted so hard. I finally played it last year and I still think about that game all the time. I wrote it off because of what people were saying about it but it turned out no one actually played the game I guess.
Ghost of tsushima was just so fucking solid. 8/10 would be fair. My playstation is still full of screenshots from this game. Sekiro has better combat and enemy's yes. But got has a better stealth system with more options, good and flashy combat on top. The online mode was fun too.
I do wanna say that all media is art that is trying to say something, even(and sometimes especially) if the creators didn't intend for it. GTA is a silly little game that probably wasn't intended to take seriously, but that doesn’t mean there aren't things to examine and discuss about it or examine. Also, Coney was so based when talking about the Exaggerated Black Teen line
20:14 yesh but it doesn't feel like it unlike their fucking 50 episode series about "Fact YOU STILL DIDN'T KNOW about Botw/Totk" now that's content farming it's probably more than 50 actually the first video i saw of that was after I bought Botw in 2022
On the cyberpunk review he makes an overly charitable interpretation based on not having all the information. While yes, its fine to review a game while not engaging with some parts of it. It comes with caveats like informing the consumer of the fact. And if youre actively not engaging in mechanics then you cant review those mechanics. A review of "the games good but i dont care about crafting so i didnt touch it" is fine. But a review of "the games good but the crafting is bad tho how would i know since i didnt touch it." Is not fine. Also the whole police thing wasnt cause its an unimportant emergent side quest, but because it was 2020 so ACAB was a big thing so she thought shed get brownie points by advertising having actively avoided engaging with any content where you would help police
Top ten most hated Gamespot reviews? Yes. Dude said GTA is the biggest video game franchise of all time? Bruh GTA is the hotdog stand outside Pokemon's Empire State Building.
Also I said it once before so I’ll say it again Alien Isolation is not trying to be a badass shooter. It’s trying to be a “HORROR” game and the best horror games have slow build ups that proceed to reach climax. The game isn’t bad just because you don’t like it’s gameplay philosophy. It’s the same with turn based combat if you don’t like it then don’t play it. I really like the phrase “there’s no such thing as a game for everyone and that’s a good thing”. Sorry man but gamers want products that challenge their patience and intelligence. And thankfully Indie and double A games do that, were as the Triple A industry produces the same tired formulas over and over again. And it’s sad that the Triple A industry, and TikTok for that matter has ruined people’s attention spans to the point where any games that don’t tug the player along with a string or lack any trust that they can figure things out for themselves (yellow paint I’m looking at you) is considered inherently outdated or can no longer be praised.
Wow this guy was already coming off pretty stupid but that last one just proves how this guy is rotten at the core. Thank you Coney for not taking that stance.
Fun fact about the Mad max game. The creator of the mad max films George Miller had Mad max fury road in production hell for like 30 years, and he tried to make multiple video games in the mid 2000s when he thought he couldn’t make fury road. So the Mad max game uses key parts of Fury roads plot like the war boys and Gas town but it’s unconnected to the final film that released in the same year. George actually ended up disowning the game because he wasn’t aware that the devs were adapting his story

I think people's problem with the way women are presented isn't that they're all bad, it's that they're all bad in woman-specific ways.
People not knowing who Gerstmann is makes me feel old. I was a Giant Bomb freak
Hilariously enough, Deacon in Days Gone does take his hat off.... To put a different hat on for like 1/3rd of the game.
Exaggerated swagger of a black teen is one of my favorite game review moments ever
It’s insane and racist yeah, but got its spawned so many funny memes
How is saying that black people have swag racist?
yeah no not really, it's honestly just accurate, black american culture is very expressive and it's exaggerated amongst black youth because all teens exaggerate whatever behaviours they most strongly identify with (e.g. performative wealth for a rich kid, excess gloominess for an emo kid, voilence for an abused kid, etc).
losing or reducing your exaggerated mannerisms is a key indicator of maturation in all of humanity as far as I'm aware.
it was only cringe because they made the awful decision to have a white guy read a script drawing on the author's personal experience as a black guy.
I genuinely don't understand why a black dude seeing the eccentricities of his own culture (and talking about them positively) is racist
I think people are just defining racism as "anything that suggests black people and white people act different" which... isn't really how it works.
@@JH-no8sy Yes, I'm well aware races are not monoliths, we're talking about culture here
I love watching Coney's reactions. His reactions are always so full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen :3
how come they label a 7/10 good? if the score is from 1 to 10 wouldn't the middle be good and sequentially 1 be awful and 10 a masterpiece?
that would be far too logical
Middle is just…okay.
...how is 7/10 middling? 6-4 is average. 7 is good. This isn't high school lol
@chiangkai-shrek1575 7/10 is average because everyone uses 7/10 as average/decent even though 5/10 is literally dead even.
This video has the exaggerated swagger of a Coney teen
My brain can't stop seeing Coney as Shaggy this whole video
@@SomniaCE sounds like reddit in a nut shell.
16:52 Fucking Gaming in the Clinton Years ass review.
Loving the Shaggy fit my guy
I got the mad max game off steam recently for like 3 bucks and loved it, fast travel was a nice feature and not because it wasn’t fun to explore but more because it’s convenient. That’s like judging Elden ring or Skyrim for having fast travel. It’s fun to explore when you want to explore and it’s not when you don’t and just want to progress the story.
Literally just remembered that the noclip guy did used to work at Gamespot 5:46
11:51 what a horrendous time to make that joke
Sometimes, yeah. I always prefer to make the decision for myself and don’t usually let reviews deter me from something that I want to try.
That guy’s right about the fast travel stuff. If you’re main draw is driving your car through a huge wasteland and trying to survive the drive between locations, free fast travel is lame as hell.
Unless you’re clear across the map, then there shouldn’t be fast travel imo.
6:45
There have been a small handful of games with fast travel that I've never used. Spider man is the obvious one but Sunset Overdrive is even better IMO because its more dynamic and interactive. Prototype was another one because the movement is so smooth in thise games and the fact that both games specifically have challenges geared toward movement says a lot imo
15:32 average guy who has not developed his sense of humor or outlook of the world since 2016. Gamers are such pathetic mouthbreathers
four female ghost busters? The feminists are taking over!
Really rocking the hair Coney glad you didn't take the comments to heart
Coney thinking Alien Isolation is bad might be the shittiest take hes ever given over a video game
Hold on, maybe we should've let gamestop cook for some of these
16:06 I think it IS art, but it's a social commentary. Everyone dislikes each kind of person in the game, because no matter how you feel, it's a gross misrepresentation. Except Franklin, love that guy
Does anyone know what song is playing after "exaggerated swagger of a black teen"?
7:00 I for sure didn't fast travel in Burnout Paradise
This exactly.
I feel like the exaggerated swagger line is still terrible, but knowing that it was a line written by a black reviewer does affect my perception of it.
Same. They really should not have had that guy deliver that line.
I mean Siren is about 20 hours to beat, and it's still at least in my top 3 of favorite horror games of all time.
Im still kinda mad that Fromsoft created the best "combat engine" or whatever you wanna call and not doing anything with it after Sekiro
Im a huge Dark Souls fan but Sekiro is the best game they ever created
Coney 7/10 tierlist when?
I dont think whether video games are art or not is entirely relevant to the discussion of themes and purpose behind a game
Video games will always have an influence on society and culture even if the discussion around that influence doesnt happen.
I’m gonna like this video with the exaggerated swagger of a Coney Sub 🗣️💯🔥
At the end of the day, if you like a game, that’s all it matters. No one else’s opinion does.
coney humor slowly turn into aris if he play smash
Coney should watch that one Baten Kaitos g4 review from the early 2000s
Coney talking about The Last of Us's noise stuff is very funny.
That spongebob puzzle was too cruel and Sisyphean for the reviewer
That Days Gone argument for out of context wedding scene is some BS. With the context it is still just as bad. FF10 laughing scene is just as strange with or without the context.
I gotta agree with the Ghost/Sekiro comparison
I loved Ghost so much then I played Sekiro and Ghost felt stale in comparison. Still a good game w/ a good story, but still.
Also thank u Coney for recommending Sekiro on stream
I know a TH-camr named Under the Mayo really dislikes alien isolation.
One must imagine spongebob happy
wrote this in response to a comment saying the swagger line was racist, but I reckon it should be a primary comment as well:
yeah no not really, it's an accurate observation and a good example of cultural representation in gaming;
black american culture is very expressive and it's exaggerated amongst black youth because all teens exaggerate whatever behaviours they most strongly identify with (e.g. performative wealth for a rich kid, excess gloominess for an emo kid, voilence for an abused kid, etc).
losing or reducing your exaggerated mannerisms is a key indicator of maturation in all of humanity as far as I'm aware.
it was only cringe because they made the awful decision to have a white guy read a script drawing on the author's personal experience as a black guy.
This is a review of a review of reviews
What's funny is that cyberpunk is now really good like actual one of the best games ever made in my opinion
Dude days gone got shafted so hard. I finally played it last year and I still think about that game all the time. I wrote it off because of what people were saying about it but it turned out no one actually played the game I guess.
Arkham looks insanely fun
song name at the beginning?
Ghost of tsushima was just so fucking solid. 8/10 would be fair. My playstation is still full of screenshots from this game. Sekiro has better combat and enemy's yes. But got has a better stealth system with more options, good and flashy combat on top. The online mode was fun too.
Typically yes....
20:14 yesh but it doesn't feel like it unlike their fucking 50 episode series about "Fact YOU STILL DIDN'T KNOW about Botw/Totk" now that's content farming it's probably more than 50 actually the first video i saw of that was after I bought Botw in 2022
Imagining coney's takes coming from an industry game review site is crazy.
People would fucking riot.
Gamespot be spitting this whole video
YOOOOO THIS GUY AGAIN
Edit: ooooooh idk about his gta5 commentary 😬😬😬
Yea I’m pretty sure they are.
Hey I suggested this video!! Hello yea
Thank You Gaming Grandpa
Ghost of Tsushima is definitely not a 7/10
Dragon's Dogma made travel by foot fun
It was absolutely inevitable that some GG nonsense was going to pop up in here
I like gamespot, they have some good stuff, but also a lot of bad stuff i hear
Fun fact about the Mad max game. The creator of the mad max films George Miller had Mad max fury road in production hell for like 30 years, and he tried to make multiple video games in the mid 2000s when he thought he couldn’t make fury road. So the Mad max game uses key parts of Fury roads plot like the war boys and Gas town but it’s unconnected to the final film that released in the same year. George actually ended up disowning the game because he wasn’t aware that the devs were adapting his story
