    Funny that such works live in relative obscurity. So many good ideas worked on so tirelessly by an obviously brilliant man... beautiful and sublime.

    Parry should be considered one of the great "unknown" composers. His work is eloquent, stately, and inspiring to many of us. Thank you for posting this!

    I just walked across the garden over the morning dew on the grass. One late, adventitious sunflower waved stately at me in the breeze from its crack in the terrace. Then I came back to my study and wrote to the accompaniment of Parry. Life can be great!

    What a great and very underrated symphony. At various times uplifting, lyrical, elegiac and finally supremely glorious in its finale. Thank you very much for posting.

    Oftentimes, as a fine music lover, I may feel to be the only one left in the world. But then I click such favorite channels as KuhlauDilfeng2, listen to such (new, for me)gems as this symphony by Parry, and then read the comments below....and then I don't feel quite so alone. Cheers!

    I can do without a fair amount of Parry, but these 5 symphonies are in a different class altogether. They are up there with the symphonies of Elgar, RVW & Bax. And so incredibly English. I love them to bits.

    I've known this work since Sir Adrian Boult's recording of the piece on the EMI label back in 1978. I haven't heard it in a while, but I'm glad I came back to it. It is a beautiful example of Edwardian symphonic music, and for all the influence of Brahms in this work, it's hard to imagine it being written by any other than an Englishman.

    Very lyrical and very Brahmsian. I had previously only thought of Parry in terms of "Jerusalem" and a few sacred pieces like "I Was Glad". I will look out for other instrumental works by him in future.

      Sorry! Can't hear any similarity between Elgar's Second Symphony and this. A friend of Elgar even called Elgar's Second Symphony his "Snarl Symphony" . If I wanted to relax, i would put on this symphony, not Elgar's second symphony.

    I don't know why Elgar's 2 symphonies get played reasonably frequently (in the U.K. at least) while Parry's get totally ignored. There have been many revivals of neglected first class works over the past 20 years, perhaps it's time for Parry to be re-assessed?

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definately. Him and Standford are the two composers I'd like to see performed as frequently at least as Mendelssohn.

      I totally disagree - this symphony is very professional for sure with some really great moments but lacks Nielsen's individuality and brilliance. However, music is both objective and subjective and we respond to composers in our own way, that's the great thing about great music!

    Un pò in ritardo (1912),una bella sinfonia che sarebbe stata composta trent'anni prima.
    Il riferimento è Brahms ,che entra praticamente in tutti i movimenti.
