The fact that they are the last priority to farm is that they can do their Job regardless of items (unlike pos 1) or being some levels ahead (unlike midlaners). That's why sometimes we see on a pro scene that pos5 farms alone, just to gain some xp to unlock that specific important ability (like AAs ult).

Sometime ago I realized that since the meta is early fighting, offline heroes like timber is incredibly good in safelane because you are essentially against another strong offline hero of the same kind. I started to lose the lane less, control the tempo of the game and outfarm and be really effective in the game in comparison to enemy pos 1 and win most games. That was somewhat like what you are talking about, it's okay to not pick extremely greedy hero for pos 1. I just wished more people also realized this

Offlane is a great role, in current patch with primal beast, axe, dragon knight and others being that strong you can solo win 60+% of games. Roles 4 and 5 are supposed to be very impactful as you are the strongest hero on the map until 10min, so you already can do a lot, and even after that if you are grimstroke or lich or dark willow, your team cant win a teamfight without you.
You know, I remember when Dota was just an overwrought but fun mod for Warcraft III multiplayer. Now it's got all this technical MLG analysis hoopla, and at least one asshole per game who yells at me for not "sticking to my role." I miss the simpler days. Can't even play a glorified Warcraft mod anymore without some nerd demanding you do the hours upon hours of required reading first.

Well, part of it is right. In dota, pos 4 is the key in early game ganking same like jungler in lol. However, pos 4 does not farm in jungle. They mostly rotate the whole map to gank and create space. This is what dota pro scene taught us. It is an effective team coordination and good if you want to climb up rank. But if you want to play for fun, I suggest you pick whatever you want. Fast (mobility) jungler: Bloodseeker Want to be a badass dueling jungler: Legion commander Teleport anywhere on map: Nature prophet Black hole all that mf: Enigma Micro jungler: Chen "Don't let this mf jungle" jungler: Alchemist So don't let yourself hold onto this pos 1 to pos 5 bs. Just play what you want and however you want.

You generally want to let the midlaner pick last so you can counter their mid pick, the rest of the picking roles are situational
