Jan Johansson is a swedish national treasure. Master of his art.

Georg Riedel on bass also is an important part of the Swedish soul even if he is from Hungary. He was a composer and have written lots of fine music and also his contra bass playing was out of this world. Lots of his music is written for child movies. It is of very high class. Several of those songs are loved in Sweden.

A true classic. It is based on a Swedish folkmelody. Jan Johansson was a true genius. Unfortunately he died too early, in a carcrash 1971. His sons Anders and Jens have played with Yngwie Malmsteen.

OK, I am Swedish and this performance is a part of my childhood. Personally I think this rendition of this simple but beautiful old folk tune to be genial. Its a variation of a very simple theme. Small changes and sometimes bigger changes. It just eats into your mind and the stay there for the rest of the day. You tried to sing the bass, but you did never get it 😄It has a certain very melancholic syncopation where some notes are delayed like stuck in sirup. This is typical for Swedish folk music. When you dance it you are supposed to bend your knee and just feel the power in the delay.
BTW - your pronunciation of the Swedish title was surprisingly good. I have never heard any English speaking that can pronounce Utanmyra before. The u and the y always are wrong. But, you could pronounce them.

Georg Riedel got a call from Jan Johansson about a recording. When he arrived at the studio he realised that it was only the two of them. The entire set consisted of simple traditional Swedish folk songs. After the recording Jan Johansson sat on the tapes for quite some time, unsure what to make of them. Was it jazz? Jan and Georg were both very ”serious” jazz musicians, could they release this?
They did. It was a very big seller, but more important it became a part of the soundtrack to the lives of a couple of generations of Swedish musicians. I doubt that very many Swedes could point to Utanmyra on a map (I can`t), but two or three notes in they know they are listening to Jan Johansson.

Jazz improv on a traditional old folk melody. The whole album is called "Jazz in Swedish" and is very well beloved in Sweden. Intersting that you saw the summer field because I can almost feel the smells and views of the olden Swedish countryside when listening to this.

The bass player Georg Riedel who passed away recently was born i the Czech Republic but wrote some tunes that more or less classifies as the soundtrack of Sweden.

I think you have to be a Swede to fully appreciate this. The cold, the darkness, all the snow... I recommend you to listen to the intro of super trouper of ABBA on wembley. Kind of a tribute to Jan Johansson. He's a legend in Sweden.

I second this! Monica was an amazing jazz singer. Would be intersting to see what you hear when you don't get the lyrics.
