The camera placement is right on point as well plus the infographic overlay showing your heart rate, etc. Racing is a workout, that is undeniable. ✌💪
Thank you for the video. Now I know who took me out on turn one. I think the calorie burn is not far off considering that both my t-shirts was soaking after recovering back to P3 in that race.
What a good video and great to see you looking into the numbers yourself. As someone who coached endurance athletes, 1438 calories an hour is world record-level calorie burning!
I think with rental karting it’s certainly a case of second guessing what novices are going to do, I race similar karts in club 100 so I don’t get much but certainly rental is far worse and you kinda need to use them as chicanes😂
I remember the last time I went to the Autobahn rental cart racing place near me. We had a middle schooler with a broccoli looking haircut, an Asian lady, and one of my friends do the infamous Forza Divebomb™️ at every sharp corner and while sure I won that race, I came out looking like I tried to fight KSI in a bar while drunk 😭
This is the first video of yours I've seen and I'm subscribing. Listening to your thoughts as you are in the race makes it so much clearer on better habits to try and have.
Good video but the feedback from me, having previously been an athlete for 15 years and spending many hours being tested as a lab rat, I would confidently say the heart rate is over reading. At threshold HR, you can’t talk. Karting can be physical but the high HR looks like a classic vibration ping. Out side of that you can also only accurately measure calories burned by measuring power. I would expect the calories burned to be closer to 500 kcal in the Kart and on a sim not much different to walking around the house and doing some house work 200 Kcal. The other thing to consider is the smaller and lighter you are the less you burn. Big heavy people generally burn more Kcal to stay alive.
I don't get why do you have such a high heart rate while racing, you look fit and you are young. I did the same monitoring as you, at the other Daytona track (MK) and I had 162 max with and 135 average bpm. Basically your average BPM is the same as my highest BPM, and that include the 40 min before and after the race, without that you averaged 180+ Bpm, which is insane! I was pretty fit when I did the test and I'm older, but I find the difference staggering
I suspect the calorie consumption is high. Even though it looks like the heart rate measurements are accurate, "high heart rate because exercise is causing the blood to have to force oxygen to your muscles" is work rate heart increase, and calorie burning, "high heart rate because excitement and stress" is not calorie burning, it's just fight/flight preparation.... Just like your heart rate goes up if you're in trouble at school/work or you think a fight is going to kick off or something, you're not actually burning noticeably more calories at that point. Really interesting video though, loved the race commentary 👍
Idk how he does it, but I know that it's possible to do it with GPS and accelerometer data from a GoPro, using a software like the Race Technology GoPro Software. Gives out pretty accurate measures, from my experience lap time is usually within a few hundredths of a second compared to the actual lap times I was doing.
You didn’t explicitly comment on the calories on a sim rig ? Can you do a part 2 with this new info of the white papers? I disabled & it’s part of my exercise routine, I use my apple but would be cool to see if it’s realistic outcomes 😊
At some point, I will definitely revisit it with some subject matter experts. My Googling can only go so far, but it’s a topic worth getting to the bottom of for sure!
I think in order for the calorie burn calculation to be effective, the algorithm will need to be trained on data collected performing a fairly specific activity. For example the same HR on the same person doing running vs biking will produce different calorie expenditure. And I don't think any of the HR monitoring devices currently have trained their algorithms on racing. And even if they had, it would likely be moderately different between actual racing and sim racing.
I do cycling and I never use my heart calories as a reference for calories burnt. We use something called a power meter which measures the amount of power that our legs exert on the pedals. Since if measured your power output it a much better estimate. My heart rate calories burnt were always more exaggerated than my power meter calories
Been a long time since i raced at Sandown, but i can attest to the fitness benefits of karting. when i stopped racing regularly (at least weekly) i gained over a stone and a half in weight very quickly lol
If I sit and drink coffee, my heart rate can increase by 40% but my caloric rate of expenditure is not increased anywhere near that much. The degree of correlative relationship between caloric expenditure and heart rate is highly dependent on the activity in question.
Honestly, it looks like the guys on the slower karts don't seem to realise that breaking on the brick kerbs is never a good thing. God knows how you kept you cool with all that spinning traffic, well done Cameron.
if your visor fogs up a lot a way to prevent this is by opening it super slightly it stills fogs up at a stand still however once you get going it seems to clear up a lot
Very good video. I'm wondering how you managed to put/sync/superimpose the real-time heart rate display info onto your video? which app do you use to do this? Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Cheers
Fun video, and great driving 😎 It is clear that driving requires fitness, but the calorie estimation seems _very_ inaccurate. Heart rate does not equal power output. It can vary based on lots of factors like your stress, how much sleep you had, if you drink coffee etc. Also losing weight during a single race will be water weight only. Calorie _estimation_ on HR is based on statistics in a sport like running where weight and speed is also considered. You would also need to do a test of your max heart rate where you ran to complete exhaustion. If we look at cycling, which is arguably one of the most data-driven sports out there, and it is common to have precise power meters. A well trained and fit person with average genetics is able to (theorietically) output ~300 watts sustained effort for an hour. After such an effort the person would likely not be able to stand upright. This would equal 1080 kcal. Your 1438 kilocalories in 1 hour would put you in the top 10 in Tour de France, where Chris Froome famously was able to output 414 watts per hour (1490 kcal/hr) 😆 I would love to see you do another video with an expert in the field of racing that could provide you with some insight.
Lap 41 T8 even got me holding my breath 😂 A 40 min race at Sandown.... I mean I do like the track for short races but I do also find it a bit too repetitive for long races. Daytona, Milton Keynes for an outdoor rental is one of the best (Besides PFI or GYG) Also, It's interesting working out your heart rate/calories usage as there's also lots of other variables to take into consideration; if your naturally athletic then your HR recovers quicker, if your older it can take upto 45 minutes to settle down, if your overweight then the post race cooldown can cause you to shiver due to excessive dehydration in the race (especially in the winter) if your wearing a lined race suit that keeps you warm Vs a rental one that is made of tissue paper and offers no warmth your body will have to work harder to stay warm/cool depending on the weather. I did one myself over 12 different races, one a month a few years ago, all at the same track to see which has a higher HR demand but the biggest variable are the 'muggles' A clean race or a race with more experience on track results in a more average HR, but one with a melee of those inexperienced 'racers' puts HR all over the place. On a side note, I've found that slipstreaming an equally experienced racer for countless laps actually lowers the HR because I guess you find them reliably predictable in every turn and every straight.
I race rental karts and this behavior seems typical of open sessions which always have a few inexperienced drivers in them. Member only / club races are much less chaotic tho.
In all rental races treat everyone as a novices, that's what the rental races are for, casual racers who are either new or just having fun, they're not there to set lap records, those are for event races, so let them learn and have fun, no need to put them down or anything, that mind set is never a good one and will land you in trouble eventually @14:22 where you pass the car that's spun out why do I see 6 marshall's and not one yellow flag waving for that hazard?
I am 16 and i was doing some rental carting 30minute race and i was going against a professional Lithuanian drifter and won against him! But nice race!
It's always funny to see those weight loss claims in F1 as if it's something unique. This is applicable in any situation where you're sweating and not hydrating fast enough. When I go for a 12 mile run, I will come back 5lbs lighter. It's just water weight. It's not a big deal (of course, proper hydration is key). And those calorie trackers are so terribly off. In no way do you burn, even a small fraction of those calories, sitting down in a kart. Doing a very-easy walk for 30 minutes burns more calories than 3 hours of karting.
12:51 Me too! i was just karting last week and someone where jordans was weaving all over the track, i ended up accidentally spinning him because he swerved into me! unbelievable.
