That's very classical inspired indeed. Blackmore is the sweet spot for me. I dig classical music interpreted on the guitar but not in overwhelming quantities like Malmsteen or Gilbert does it.
@@DogwithtwoBones In contrast to many Rainbow fans I think Straight Between the Eyes has some nice stuff going on. I also think JLT was a good singer but I agree that he didn't suit the band very well. Nonetheless I think it is a good album and the guitar sound is legendary good IMO! I always wanted to sound like Ritchie on this album :D
Timon S i have no problem with JLT, he is a good singer and writer and he did fit the band but not the rainbow that people wanted to hear, but the rainbow Blackmore wanted to make to have popular success on the charts. And they did. I think all 3 JLT albums have great sounding guitat on them but there are also bad tone on them. It is not as consistent as before with purple mkii and mkiii where everything sounded amazing.
I am glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! In case you haven't seen it on my channel I have a tab store in case you wanna look around: gumroad.com/dogwithtwobones
A really cool thing about Blackmore's style is that it lends itself well to improvisation. You can play a solo like the record, or you can change it up. It's really rather interesting.
I'd say sometimes it is easier to just improv than transcribe the madness Blackmore came up with on the spot :D But the music is indeed very supportive of jamming.
Great analysis my friend. You have become the #1 channel for Blackmorons such as myself XD. I also think that this one sounds a little bit off compared to other covers of yours, but I think it's for two reasons: a) you are more geared towards his 70s style; b) his 80s tone is more distorted and even a little bit fuzzy (not my favorite one tbh) ,while your sound is cleanish and bity. Maybe some hotter pickups would help for this. Anyway, I hope to hear more discussions on some of his stuff because you make good pioints and it's good to have someone else's (very knowledgeable) opinion. Cheers! Davide
Thank you! I agree about the sound and the reasons. I'd say the pickup is a big factor, in the 80s it is hard to know what he used on each song and my cs69 pickups are indeed week for that era but I had the ssl4s and did not like them and the lace sensor gold aren't the best either. Also Dawk modded his amp during the early rainbow and I think that changed a lot but that knowledge died with him unfortunately. Also I have 3 aiwa pedals and I dont necessarily try all of them because I am not the stoked about the 80s sounds. These solos I usually just play with a tone I consider "my own".
I remember trying to play this solo but I couldn't figure out the part which begins in 0:38 in your video. Thank you very much! I'm looking forward to learn it properly this time :) 1:46 oh yes I absolutely agree with you :D. That's the most difficult part when you try to play like him.
You pretty much played the solo perfectly save for two licks that are still close but you can get closer. I agree with you that Blackmore -on many occasions- played some untabbable solos like "Gypsy's kiss" ,but this solo -i think- could be replicated and you were pretty close, Satsuma proves that it can be replicated, and i must thank you for the tab, it's a more than a great starting point.
Thanks, I am not satisfied with my take looking back. I guess it is possible to get closer, I am just not that dialed in with this side of Blackmore. There are a couple of people on youtube doing a good job with these free flowing improvs but no one perfected it to a level I'd like to achieve so I gave up. Just checked out Satsuma's cover. pretty good but it's always hard to separate the cover and the real track with covers like that so it helps a bit.
@@DogwithtwoBones In two years, you must've got much better. Alongside Satsuma there is SANO; his cover is even closer to Blackmore than Satsuma's. You're doing a great job with Blackmore stuff, your "Since you've been gone" and "The circle" tabs really helped me, thank you!
Gracias y saludos!!!
Thank you! Tabbing out and recording the entire song is a huge task, it would take a lot more time also it wouldn't sound as good because I am usually playing over a backing track I made from the original recording by EQing out the guitar solo. It is practically impossible to mute all the guitar parts on a record (if not live) and recording the whole backing track would cost money as I dont play drums and cant sing. So for now I have to stick to the solos but it might change in the future.
Excellent job......but please STOP using the phrase "fake guitar playing"........ Blackmore calls it SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT NOTES WITH MISTAKES..................... Thank you for the fantastic Lesson
Thanks! I never know what to call it. Sometimes it is searching as he says but otherwise it is rather a chaotic rocking out feeling but not actually playing.
Exactly, thanks Agustín! If you are not interested in the talking part Nolly you don't have to watch it, that's why I have the tabbed version in the beginning of the video :)
The first 4 phrases are clearly taken by J. S. Bach one of the greatest inspirations of Blackmore, one of the reasons I love this 'solo'.

That part at 0:38 is wild and I wouldn't know how to play it properly but I try to imitate what Blackmore did, hope it helps you figure something out.
