I got this as part of a three-pack that came with my Saturn in early 1997 (along with Virtua Cop and Daytona USA) and played it a ton. Still own my original Saturn AND still own that three-pack.
+真瑠 NOOOO!!!! Only one game had THE BALLZ!!!!! 2 be the first fighting game ever! And its called Ballz!!!! Although between the game play mechanics and the graphics, this series kinda erases that one lol.
Virtua Fighter, definitely my favourite beat em up and in my opinion the greatest of all of them. So much depth, deceptively so and the range of fight styles and options creates great longevity.
I loved VF2 in the arcade and was ecstatic with the Saturn version. My only disappointment was that they didn't include the 3D bridge in Shun Di's level but I suppose that was well beyond the Saturn's capabilities.
Mine wat that the game has only 10 characters with no ending sequences and few option games. Why do we have to fight the fighters in that damn orders? Lau, then Sarah, then Shun Di, then Pai etc. It's a great game but it could be even better
Ahh memories... I was about 6 years old, on a ferry to france at 4 am, freezing cold with my twin brother. everyone on the ship was up. my mum was having a cup of tea and gave us 2 pounds to go and play games, and there it was virtua fighter 2...
I remember how gorgeous this looked in the arcade. Whenever I went to the arcade I'd plunk a few quarters into VF2.....could never get past Pai for some reason.
Akira and Kage were my favoured characters. I love the new additions in Virtua Fighter 5 though, Jean Kujo and Goh Hinagami, both decent fighters to play as.
Aaah, memories. I may be young, but I can still remember this game in the bowling alley arcade. I never played it though, the spaceship shooters were far too much fun.
It's too bad youtube is unable (as far as i know) to show the 60 frames per second that this game was running. The super smooth, arcade-accurate high frame rate was what made this game soo spectacular on the Saturn.
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution is by far my favorite game in the series. It had everything the other games had, plus a million ways to taylor the experience to suit your style.
This is one of the first 3D fighters I can recall that was enjoyable to play (or rather, whose gameplay compared favorably to the refined 2D fighter genre).
this game absolutely blew me away back in 1995, at the time the best fighting game on home consoles was street fighter 2 turbo and then to go and see this at the bowling alley was like nothing i ever seen, its like seeing a fighting game a hundred times better looking than tekken 6 etc
this game has some of my favorite video game music ever.got this game bundled with daytona usa and virtua cop back when the saturn was dying out for $99 for christmas of 1996 i think.great console with great games.a timeless machine.
i had it in 96 and loved it and played it everyday with my bro... till finally in 2005 my sega broke.. i can tell u this will never get old.. and the musics r fantastic.. and it was light years ahead of any other game.. remember this was the time when mortal combat 2d graphics was considered the best... but one down part is u got to have a partner equally matched
This was one hell of a conversion for the Saturn. Higher res characters than the next generation of game systems. (Although the backgrounds were rendered separately at the default resolution, which in itself is impressive).
Sega in House development team knew how to develop for the Saturn..they knew allof the little "tricks" that no one else knew. So that is why the games like Sega Rally 2, Nights, and this game looked so great
Virtua Fighter 2 Is Still MY Favorite Game Outta Da Whole Entire Series 4 Numerous Reasons!!!!!!(I've Played It Recently On My Channel 2 Show My Appreciation)
this is the earliest game i remember playing. my uncle had a saturn when i was like 4, this and the daytona racing game. that and the 6-pak and virtual bart for genesis.
Interestingly, the characters were done in high resolution, 720x500-something I believe, while the backgrounds were rendered in the usual Saturn resolution. Pretty damned cool. The character resolution is higher than what GC, PS2 and Xbox games ran at the next generation.
Take a look at the few recent Virtua Fighter-games again (Virtua Fighter 4, 5 and Final Showdown). There are big sparks when hit and the characters skin "lights" up (like someone was blinking a flashlight on them). The sparks are just as important as in Tekken etc. and tell you how good your attack was and where it hits you or your opponent.
I think I'm one of the only ones to pick up on the fact that you kept quiet every time Pai would do her irritating winning speech. LOL! I picked up on that right away and thought it was funny as hell!
Awesome, Mark is really hitting the Saturn now! It really was a under appreciated system. The PSX just swamped it though as far as marketing and consumer interest.
Family had this for the living room when I was really young. Recently bought a ps1 again, might get a Saturn again too...just for this game, the original tomb raider, and a few of those Games where you hook up the light guns lol
Exactly. I had this game back when I was 5/6 and I got all the way to that metal woman at the end who I believe was underwater. I haven't played this since I was that age so my memory's a little foggy, but I'm sure if I picked this up today I would suck.
I've had to explain myself for a year now since this is the top comment... I own and play all Tekken-games, and I love VF. My actual opinion is, Tekken was fantastic and still is, but it has been going slightly downhill while Virtua Fighter has become better and better. I wish people would play both. I just don't like when someone bashes any credible fighter. VF is special to me since it was the first 3D-fighter I played (Tekken 1 came a year later and I got a PS1 etc.) KoF rules, man, wtf?!
The best Virtual Fighter game in the series..yes, it was even better than 3, and 4. Thisgame had the perfect balance, which is kinda hard to explain, but the latter virtual fighter games just couldn't seem to recapture,
Precisely: there's no point in getting annoyed about the plot for the series, because that's not what matters. All that's important is the sweet combat.
I never understood what was so fantastic about this game. It's good, but I don't see why people bow down and pray to it. Just a thought. My favorite VF was 3 and still is 3.
I'm curious to see your review of the Saturn stick. If it's the same one I have in mind... Back in the day I had the PC port of VF2 and played the heck out of it. if I remember it correctly it worked pretty well with the keyboard. But I said the same about Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha on the PC. It was 8years later when i got VF2 for the Saturn.
You have reviewed the Sega Saturn version of Virtua Fighter 2 without mention any problem that this wonderful game has/had: only 10 characters, no ending sequences nor information about the history, few other modes that were too similar to the Arcade mode. And why should we have to fight the characters in that damned order on every mode we selected? The first will be always Lau, then Sarah, then Shun Di, then Pai etc. There is no variety. VF2 is like a coin-op in our rooms: a very good game that could be a perfect game if only Sega could made something more "console-oriented"
I might be remembering it wrong, but this is suposed to be the Virtua Fighter game that was the most tactical, atleast compared to nr 3. My experience from VF was that it was all about timing all moves at the precisely right moment and button mashing would get you super owned. Well thi is the VF series hallmark, but it was I think most pronounced in VF 2.
I think the graphics and gameplay still looks quite good. You can't compare them to to today's standards, you need to compare them to games like Tekken and Dead Or Alive on the PS1, and when you do that.. VF2 will be the most impressive out of the bunch.
my brother had the sega saturn, then a year later we got the playstation, but to me 1 year with the sega saturn seemed like a longer era, it was only 1 year :P
Sega needs to release a Virtual fighter mega collection for the xbox and PS3..that would be great. Include every single virtual fighter game every made.
it looked and played better, it was a much deeper fighting game than tekken 2..but tekken 2 got all of the hype because it was on the playstaion at the time, and everyone sort of forgot about this great game called Virtual fighter 2
This game was soooooooooooooo smooth and it just flowed. For some reason the ringouts on this one are way better than the newer ringouts. Idk bout you all but that just something that bugged the shit outta me.
Virtua Fighter 2 by today's standards, is still amazing. I'm really bugged, however. I've never played the FIghters Megamix. I was expecting the same quality, if not higher, than that of Virtua Fighter 2. It is not even close. Bummed. Especially because my copy of VF2 is now lost in the mail...gotta call USPS tomorrow. USPS still sucks, in case you're wondering. No wonder they'll be gone by 2024.
Above player 2's health bar, the words "PRESS SMARM BUMMON" can be seen in a few of the fights in this review. Did the letter "T" get lost in translation?
I want a Virtua Fighter 6 with online multiplayer for PlayStation 3 dammit!! I love playing Virtua Fighter 5, but the lack of online multiplayer kinda bites in this day and age of standard online connectivity.
I got this as part of a three-pack that came with my Saturn in early 1997 (along with Virtua Cop and Daytona USA) and played it a ton. Still own my original Saturn AND still own that three-pack.
I love Shun's stage with the running river in the background!
Me too, it’s so memorable
HAPPY 20th Anniversary Virtua Fighter!!
30th anniversary now!! I was just playing Virtua Fighter 2 a couple days ago😎
@@therealquinnzack1819 I’ve also been playing Virtua Fighter 2 a lot. Such a great game!
Virtua Fighter is the best one-on-one fighting series out there.
Also, it can boast of being the first 3D fighting game ever.
AMEN Brother!!
I ♥ VF!! ^_^
I prefer Tekken to be honest.
+真瑠 NOOOO!!!! Only one game had THE BALLZ!!!!! 2 be the first fighting game ever! And its called Ballz!!!! Although between the game play mechanics and the graphics, this series kinda erases that one lol.
@@iPlaySEGA Sega is the king of 3D fighting games and Capcom is the king of 2D fighting games.

Visually this game still hold up pretty well compared to other console fighters of the era. Especially the levels.
I remember how gorgeous this looked in the arcade. Whenever I went to the arcade I'd plunk a few quarters into VF2.....could never get past Pai for some reason.
same!
Akira and Kage were my favoured characters.
I love the new additions in Virtua Fighter 5 though, Jean Kujo and Goh Hinagami, both decent fighters to play as.
Sarah was my all time fave! I used to play this all the time when I was a kid and I still find this game pretty enjoyable.
I remember being amazed by vf2's awesome framerate on the Saturn.
Aaah, memories. I may be young, but I can still remember this game in the bowling alley arcade. I never played it though, the spaceship shooters were far too much fun.
My very first Saturn game. And very first 32 bits game. I can never thank anough the people at Sega *who worked on it back then* for this masterpiece.
the music in this game is INCREDIBLE!!

They did smoothen out the polygons from VF1... So YAY! (:
yeah i loved the music too best music of all the virtua fighter series
Virtua Fighter 2 = Masterpiece!
Great review man!
I like Virtua Fighter 4 more though.
I had this game on the PC way back in the day, it was freakin awesome, and the sound was excellent. I always liked Lion and Shun.
I love the beginning where they took the graphics from the prequel and let it change to the "new" ones that you can see in this game
we had the first Virtua Fighter ( I think) for Computer and the prequel, I remember it, but I was so young back then.. .this game must be really old..
Sega in House development team knew how to develop for the Saturn..they knew allof the little "tricks" that no one else knew.

can't believe how much of a visual improvement was made between the original and this version, considering there was only a year between them.

I lol'd at Kage. His job being 'ninja'. I had no idea we still have ninjas as an occupation in modern times. But he does like mahjong! ^_^
this was the best & deepest fighter of its time!
Exactly. I had this game back when I was 5/6 and I got all the way to that metal woman at the end who I believe was underwater. I haven't played this since I was that age so my memory's a little foggy, but I'm sure if I picked this up today I would suck.
shuns my favourite fighting character of all time!
Brilliant game. Virtua Fighter and Mortal Kombat are 2 greatest fighting game franchises ever made
God, I used to play this game in a gamehall alll the time when it came out! It`s the greatest game EVER. Wish they would release it on ps3 =o)

the music is great!
its neat to see the roots of this game
this was the best looking game at the time
That was a great Saturn game. I know because I used to have it. Jacky was my fav character.
The best Virtual Fighter game in the series..yes, it was even better than 3, and 4.

I just bought this, Daytona, and Virtua Cop all in a Holiday 3 pack. Awesome, apparently is was a $185 value
Oh goooooood.... Because Sonic the Fighters is everyone's faaaaavorite game....
I never understood what was so fantastic about this game. It's good, but I don't see why people bow down and pray to it. Just a thought. My favorite VF was 3 and still is 3.
I actually think the graphics in this game are amazing, especially for their time. I think its held up very well.

man i used to play this on my windows 98 a long time ago now. Good times
superb conversion running at arcade perfect 60 fps!
I played the arcade version couple of days ago. Pretty good for a classic game!!
imo unlike many other 32 bit 3d games. virtua fighters 2 graphics have aged surprisingly well. same can be said fort virtua cop.
Yakuza 5 features Virtua Fighter 2, you can try Virtua Fighter 2 in the Yakuza 5 demo.

Virtua Fighter 2 is on sale at the PlayStation Store right now for like $2/2€/1,50£ if anyone's interested.
This game won game of the year 1996 by GAME PLAYERS MAG! LONG LIVE GAMEPLAYERS!!!! (Remember Bill Donahue???)
I don't make it a habit to fight those without a foreskein
i had this game for the pc, it was awesome back then^^
my brother had the sega saturn, then a year later we got the playstation, but to me 1 year with the sega saturn seemed like a longer era, it was only 1 year :P
Sem dúvidas, VF foi uma revolução entre os jogos de luta. Um clássico!

I just realized that Akira is Arika (company that produced the Street Fighter EX games) spelled backwards.
ahh good old times. My first game for the saturn xD
Where can I buy the Classic Game Room DVD from in the UK?
P.S - Awesome review
Great news, Virtua Fighter 2 is coming to PSN/XBLA Fall 2012
400ms points on XBLA for the arcade version 2.1 in HD, amazing game, and at a give away price.
I've got nothing against Virtua Fighter, but you have to admit that it could do with some more flamethrowers, just like most brawlers could.
Hey guys, SEGA is re-releasing this game, Fighting Vipers, and Sonic The Fighters on XBLA and PSN.
Virtua Virtua Fighter will rock.
I have both Sega Saturn and Virtual Fighter 1 & 2 :D
Above player 2's health bar, the words "PRESS SMARM BUMMON" can be seen in a few of the fights in this review.
Did the letter "T" get lost in translation?
This game is also on the ps2,along with the first virtua figther and virtua figther 4
i had this game for PC, and i still have.
Virtua Shark Wrestling! I want that game.
@Andthatswhymacssuck ;I meant its sequals not 'predecessors' in my last post.lol
I want a Virtua Fighter 6 with online multiplayer for PlayStation 3 dammit!! I love playing Virtua Fighter 5, but the lack of online multiplayer kinda bites in this day and age of standard online connectivity.
metal Gear Solid also, and the Soul edge/Calibur games, and Bushido Blade 1 and 2
