I completely agree, There were a lot of gays in the wild west, Some wore a certain color to signify their bottom status. That's actually real.

At the Cannes presentation, Almodovar talked about his will to answer the question ask in Brokeback Mountain : "What can two men in a ranch do" or something like that. Pedro Pascal give the answer at the end of SWOL : "Take care for each other, look after one another...". The loop is looping (french expression I don't know if it makes any sense in english)

The strong colors of the film have a reason, and his name is Pedro Almodóvar. For film lovers, it's very easy to recognize one of his films, he's very artistic, and he loves to use red, I love that. And GOD you should have made many Pedro Pascals, because I wanted one for myself, I would be happy forever😍

Many towns in the old west as it was being settled were initially populated almost entirely by men. These places were considered rough and dangerous and no place for women (given the gender roles of the day). This type of atmosphere naturally would lead men who were so inclined to look for companionship amongst themselves. And many older western films do in fact have some gay undertones to some of the characters.
I even remember we had an American history textbook when I was in junior high in Illinois in the 1970's that had a paragraph that mentioned how some old west towns held dances for recreation on Saturday nights and, since there were no women, half the men would wear a bandana in their back pocket to indicate that they would take the role of the woman in the partnered dancing. Interestingly, that idea of a bandana in the back pocket signaling something was adopted by gays in the 1970s, especially in the leather/western gay bars, and there was an elaborate code of colors as to what you were into being signaled by the color of the bandana in your back pocket.

I didn't expect this film to end with a happy ending honestly.

There are actually westerns with queer subtext. Check out “Red River” with Montgomery Clift.

I saw this a couple times in theaters and there was a 30 min interview with Almodovar (who wrote and directed SWOL) at the end.
He had a vision for a full film with these characters and as unsatisfying and bittersweet (and unhinged, frankly - Silva essentially has kidnapped Jake) as the short is, the full film idea is more heartbreaking.

Though far more extreme than here: the kidnapping of Jake gave me Boxing Helena vibes (RIP. Julian Sands).

In Re: Degrees of social freedom (or at least relative tolerance) in the American Old West -- it literally just varied from town to town, region to region, decade to decade. While overt/public queerness (as we define today) wasn't generally accepted, what happened in certain bars/inns, and certainly in private homes -- which, in the Old West, could easily be miles or more from anyone else -- allowed for certain freedoms for some queer individuals.

Almoldavar is a camp/queer genius. You should watch one of his older movies, like LAW OF DESIRE. Back in the 80’s, it was a invigorating FU to AIDS, fundamentalists, and mainstream bigots.

When I tell you people died when they first heard of this. Also, there’s a scene with drinking wine from a barrel for which you need your fan.

I also was confused about the plot and who killed who….needed to be a regular length movie. I needed more flashbacks too, bc its like just one and it doesnt give enough depth to their relationship.

About being more free and lawless back then. Don't forget that the bigots were also more free to do as they wanted. I imagine there were some bastards back then that easily avoided punishments for what they did.

Disagree that the film "subverts" the genre. It's just bringing the essential (and oft-noted) gayness of the classical western to the surface. Almodovar is obviously the right person for the job!
